Rolfslake Saturday Open 24th March 2012

The fish start to feed getting ready for the Easter Festival.

After a lay off from fishing for the last 7 weeks due to injuring my wrist, i was warmly greeted by the anglers down the lake and they were all hoping for a great days fishing as was warm with the sun shining.

We agreed that todays match was going to bedy, a walk off and that we could use both the big and small lake so with Pete Arnold drawing number one he went off to fish peg 8 in the gap  then the next four went in the big lake and the next four opted for the small lake me being one of them {but not my favoured peg 3 this time ].

As I had chosen peg 39 today I could believe my eyes as there must of been 200 carp cruising between 39 and 40 and that was going to be my main problem today but not for the anglers in the big lake as the fish were in the middle between pegs 14 round to 28 so they were not on top of them.

The story of todays match was with the sun shining the carp did not like the pole fished above their heads so for two of the top 3 today it was waggler fished in the middle pinging small amounts of pellets and for the other in the top three it was close range fishing to assemble the three ton weights in the match.

In first place today was lake regular Andy Rayment who was fishing on the motorway bank peg 16 and after seeing all the carp on the surface decided to fish the waggler at a depth of about two feet using banded 8mm hard pellet. Andy had to continually cast to the fish if he had not had a bite after 30 seconds and Neil told me that Andy was casting to the areator which I replied that was good then he told me that the areator was tied to the bank on peg 24 [ top casting Andy} and after a busy 5 hours Andy weighed in 166-00 for peg king but no king of the lake.

Hot on Andys heels was Pete Arnold fishing peg 8 in the gap, and Pete had a nice days fishing catching carp skimmers and chub from the bush to his left using pellet hook bait and feeding pellet. Pete also like Andy had big fish to double figures and it was great to see peg 8 come back to form as the previous top weight had only been 35lb or so, and at the end Pete fell only two fish short of the win with his weight of 146-08.

Completing the frame was Neil Riddy who after watching Andy catching up in the water followed suit by fishing the waggler but this time fishing at a depth of a foot and a half and using 6mm banded hard pellet but was always playing catch up but also caught fish to double figures in his weight of 114-00.

John and the Pirate share the spoils in todays match.

As for my battle against John it was not a lot to report as we both struggled to get a bite from the carp and at the end settled for an tied match with our 4lb weight of silvers which is not what I was expecting on my return to fishing.

The score so far stands at:

JOHN 4

EDDIE 1

Just a reminder to all the anglers that soon we will be in club match season down the lake with very few opportunities to fish on  a Saturday and Sundays so your best chances of a good days fishing and a laugh with the guys will be on the Wednesdays, and now the clocks have gone forwards the draw time is 1 O’clock fish 2 to 7 so if you want a chance of a big weight get down to one of these matches.

Thanks for reading John, Simon and Eddie.
