Rolfslake Wednesady Open 28th March 2010

The king of the lake falls for the second time in 3 Days.

With the start of the Wednesday bagging series as the draw is now 1pm fishing 2-7 which saw a good turn out of 18 anglers hoping to catch a net full of fish in todays match.

The weather was sunny and warm and there were loads of carp cruising around the big lake ,so a draw from pegs 14 round to 26 were going to give you a chance of a big weight and as the draw was called there was a rush to get first in the queue except me who always draws last. Andy Quarmby the first angler to catch 200lb from the lake last weekend had drawn peg 14 , Mark Newbold had drawn peg 18 and Paul Jay had drawn peg peg 34 so there was no change in the same anglers drawing the same flyers and also their pegs were solid with fish how depressing.

At least John had drawn peg 23 so it was going to be a quiet match for me as he was out of shouting range as I was on peg 9 and I had Neil Riddy for company on peg 8 and Andy Rayment on 32 so at least pleasant company for 5 hours with no abuse so happy days for a change. The story of the match was the anglers on the car park bank pegs 14 to 18 were into fish straight away with the anglers in the small lake struggling to catch many fish as it was very bright in this area causing a problem to seeing their floats and as the match went on the fishing just got better and better for most of the anglers as it normally does on a Wednesday.

The winner of todays match was Rolfslakes inform angler Andy Quarmby who was on form peg 14 on the motorway bank and just to show how many fish there were in this peg Andy managed to hook a fish within 5 seconds of the all in being called. Andy today started off fishing really shallow on the pole plonking the bait in front of the fish who were very happy to feed and Andy had managed to catch 8 carp in the first 20 minutes so a big weight was on the cards. Andy was fishing 8 to 10mm banded pellet on the hook fish fishing shallow which gave him 200lb in the first three hours, but a fishless fourth hour slowed him down and he swithched to a 5 metre line for the last hour fishing big banded pellet which picked up his catch rate and after 5 hours caught a fantastic 341-04 to still be king of the lake {well done Andy}.

In second place and hot on the heels of Andy was Mark Newbold 4 pegs away on peg 18 and like Andy was fishing shallow using pellet hook bait which caught him plenty of carp to double figures, in fact Mark had 199lb of fish on the board before weighing his fish in the nets. A switch to fishing the bush to his right again using pellet  but this time fishing on the deck kept the fish coming but in the end he fell just short of the 300lb barrier with his very good weight of 287-00.

Completing the frame and keeping very quiet today was lake owner John Bennett who after half an hour was seen walking around the lake as he was unhappy with his draw of peg 23, but 5 hour later he was smiling like a cheshire cat as not only had he framed but had beaten me in the process. John fished a two metre line to the bush to his left using both banded pellet and meat hook bait and feeding pellet, and the fish were happy to come close to the bank even the big ones as he managed to catch an Ollie { a carp of 18-08 the same weight as his dog ] and many other doubles in his final weight of 171-08.

 Report to follow.

With the later starts in both the Monday and Wednesday opens I expect the weights to get bigger and bigger and also the attendances, so if you fancy a chance of a big match weight and the possibilty of a 20lb carp and good company then get down to one of these opens you wont regret it.

Thanks for reading John, Simon and Eddie.

  • Well done Andy on another fine victory.

My shoulder is proper knackered this morning so no more 16m for me. I’m going to fish to the nearest bush next week and fill it in!

  • my prediction of ‘its gonna be dire, I wouldnt be surprised if noone broke a ton; was a bit wide of the mark

kicking myself for that wasted hour though!

  • Kicking yourself? Why, you won by miles?

10 degrees drop in temperature between Friday and Saturday, will kill it stone dead! Break out the expanders and fish for snotties.

Poor Jeff, Harry Ramsden’d big time!

    • could of had 400lb and probably lake king for the year is what I meant

apparently rule now is 12″ min depth, but still 18″ max lash

      hmmm

    • Eddie said the guy on 13 apparently only had 4 fish,

      Thats a 300lb deficit

  • Rambo those PR36 straighten under pressure. Straightened two of em yesterday and I’ve just bought 5 packs! ggrrr.

Back to mustad extra power carp barbless, only hook I’ve never straightened as they have an insane gauge on them.

Steve knows what I’m talking about don’t you Waters!

    • lol I could have told you they arent strong enough for Rolfs when bagging

You need to show me how you land your fish, ive seen you doing it but always bottled it. Noone lands em as quick as you IMHO (MUST BE THE BROWN HYDRO LOL)

these are the hook I use at Rolfs

      • Simple technique that I developed to stop me from smashing my pole to bits. The 401 is paper thin and I don’t think it’s designed for bagging anything bigger than 6lb personally so I had to change the way I was playing fish after busting sections when I first bought the pole.

I’d like to show you but you keep beating me so I’d like to think I can keep the only advantage I have thanks!

        John Draper spotted it too…..

        • it works really well

i spotted it last year when you were on peg 4

however i think i wont need it, ive found a really strong short 4 section that I can use for that little extra leaverage now

  • I like how Eddy had a sneaky dig with ‘in form peg 14’

    the pirate!!

  • Not sure about the 18 inch maximum Andy, i fish longer lines than that to the float when needed. I was of the opinion that it was 12 inch maximum from float bristle to hook depth now, which will make peg 8 difficult when bagging over! But i didn’t realise it was an 18 inch max from pole tip to float. I fish long lines regular shallow fishing and mega long line when they shy from the pole. I’m up Wednesday so we can iron the wrinkles out and i’l find out what the actual problem is. I was under the impression that there was a bit of ‘dapping’ going on and this was what caused the uproar?

  • Whats dapping?

  • Dupiaza:

    Whats dapping?

Lowering the bait in front of the fish without the float in the water.

    Also known as dobbing

    • Nope, none of that from me!

I was plopping. Dropping float from a decent height to create a plop!

  • It’s an old Swindonian word! it means dapping the baited rig on the surface of the water in front of a fishes gob! No one told me this is what happened, i was just assuming this as it’s common for the time of year. Personally i would of been mugging fish yeterday if i was there, on the drop is my style but it sounds like things got a bit misunderstood maybe? This mugging shallow with no feeding don’t last that long anyway does it.

    • Phil, ill tell you exactly what happened

me and mark were fishing easily 10″ deep and basically we absolutely emptied it for first hour like crazy. when you dropped it on a fishes noise all you saw was its tail as it dived down and CLONK happy days

Jon B was not happy because we werent feeding anything.

there was NO dapping, my float was always in the water

it was red hot, flat as glass what else are you supposed to do?

the method works about 2ce a year but when it works its fun. When you’ve been sat all winter feeezing your conkers off and suddenly its muggers galore you make hay whilst the sun shine.

How about you put it to Jon, 12″ and 3 foot lash maximum, that way theres NO dobbing, and no over silly long lining.

there was a bit of ill feeling to be honest after the match yesterday.

      2 things happen now..

      1. it comes cold anyway and it stops working
      2. they have had a proper battering so they become wise as hell to it anyway and it doesnt work

  • If you can see it, mug it !!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Did you catch any on paste Mark?

    • Only in the dying moments down the edge. Surprised how close in they would come. Had to look anywhere other than in front of me as i was blinded by the sun for the last three hours…..

  • Patrick Pritchard:

If you can see it, mug it !!!!!!!!!!!!

    My motto Pat!!! lol

  • and mine 🙂

  • I’m sure that will be fine

    • oh its all getting a little serious. it’s only fishing guys.

If your float goes under, strike, fish on hopefully, and enjoy the sunny weather before it snows next week!

First time i’ve ever caught shallow at Rolfs there’s no way i can be accused of being a serial mugger!

      • you just want everyone to fish paste on the deck so you can clean up lol

        paste mugger!!!

  • anyway the good news is that they are really waking up

the last 70 minutes on top kit and 3 it was carnage

i think I had 13 and lost 4 and missed a few guzzundas

need a wind blowing to the small lake to disperse that shoal

i reckon from 14 round to 23 there must be 70% of the lakes population its solid

(well 343 and 287 kinda give that away lol)

  • I must of had 100 carp shallow in front of me at the start of the match.

Then I received a 3 hour retina scan and couldn’t see if all for the rest of the match – I’m blind!

The boys are chasing the girls tho I can see a massive spawning session coming soon….

  • lol, too much you know what

ha, it was funny, when I had my hand up blocking the sun im sure mick lane (it looked like him anyway) thought I was constantly waving at him

im still waiting the usain bolt style pose photo to come out

It don’t bother me mate, fishing is fishing to me weather it’s fishing inches deep or wanging out a feeder or moulding a lump of paste on the hook…etc etc!!The Spring ‘feed nothing and have long pole and polaroids’ method always upsets a few, but the method don’t last.

  • personally i like setting it alight on the paste at 8m but that doesn’t work when its a flat calm and roasting.

Bites down the edge are insane, my float went under a good six inches on the first bite ave it!

    • was surprisingly impressed with the food in that harvester

      a nice pint too

table for 3 was very cosy, sharing mugging stories ;0 ha was a good day out

another chapter in the book of rolfs.

  • it prob wont work again this year as by the time it next warms right up the water temp will be more homogenous and they’ll be munching on the ant and deck anyway

its just another skill, wielding 14m of pole and landing it 8″ in front of a fish with a 4-5 foot lash is an art form

new rules at rolfs, 18″ minimum lash, 12″ maximum depth lol

    on yer marks….

  • i’m always up for a pint after mate, try to fish socialable venues you know, keep it chilled.

    Paste! Paste! Paste!

  • never thought, after the pairs matches id have gone for a pint

any chance of some paste tips this year? I can teach you how to draw fliers

  • if you can teach me how to avoid the litte lake from Jan to March i’ll show you everything i know about paste

  • you only had 1 it once in 3 matches

not doing too bad on your own 😉

  • 1 in 3 even

think i’ve got mild sun stroke

  • i’ve had a banging head ache all day mate, could be the heat its roasting in my office. 28 degrees at my desk

  • alarm went off at 7am this morning there was no way I was getting up

    proper tired

Makes no difference to me, still empty it shallow lol

  • Anyone got a stepladder attachment for a Rive, I want to perch on the top of it all day and scan the horizon for cruisers and swing a long line out and mug em all day…..lmao….

Isn’t skull dragging banned by the way? If not I’m elasticising my landing net handle Drayton Res stylie, 20lb maxima direct, with a Quarmby gaff attached and swing em to hand, that’ll be quicker than Mark’s method Andy lol
