As i arrived in the carpark it was nice to see a nice number of anglers trying their luck in one of Rolfslake’s night matches and as always the usual suspects were in attendance. The evening was sunny and warm although this did change to colder temperatures as the night went on.
In the last 3 hours the fishing picked up but it was not mad by Rolfslake standards but what it did was keep it close as nobody was really pulling away so kept it close for about 6 anglers till the end.
The fishing in the first couple of hours was nothing special but as the lights turned on the fishing picked up as the anglers could see their floats better with the 1000 watt bulbs on display, and a funny story John told me of an angler who asked him when he was going to turn the lights on as he could not see his float only to realise later he was still wearing his sun glasses.
With draw time called the eager anglers gathered in a dis-organised line hoping to draw a good peg and as the pegging was done by John Hague and myself that was a dead cert. The match started at 7.45 and was going to finish at 12.45 with a barbeque supplied by Pauline and John so even if you had a bad nights fishing you were definitely going to get a bite at the barbeque table which was good considering the fishing had by a few of the anglers tonight.

My pegging buddy and Mr nice guy John Hagues.
In first place and continuing his good form of drawing good pegs { sorry i mean framing } was Rolfslake Cartel member Paul Jay who tonight had draw peg 34 in the corner of the small lake. Paul was fresh from his win in the Monday match and tonight he employed his favoured method of fishing a line at about 8 metres straight out in front and down the edge to his right. Paul today fished on the deck using 8mm hard banded pellet feeding pellet and was rewarded with big fish to 19-08 in his weight of 167-08 and only one fish away from the chasing pack { well done Paul }.

In second place and on a big skimmer off a win was Meat man Mick Jones who only just made the draw due the M25 bieng chock a block and arrived very smartly dressed. Mick was also on a run of form as he framed in the midweek match and when he pulled out peg 6 he knew he would be in for a few bites tonight and after5 hours had a board weight of 132-00 to be added to his net weight. Mick was fishing his celebrity meat at short range fished on the deck and again caught big fish which can be a challenge when it gets dark but these fish kept Mick fit as he had to keep going to the scales. At the end of the match Micks board weight and net fish when added together went 165-12 and was only one fish off that match win.

Now thats how to dress for a fishing match, Rolfslake's Mick Jones.
Completing the frame was my old adversary Rolfslake’s owner John Bennett who was fishing the only peg that did not have its own light but that did not bother him at all. John managed to catch his first fish after his bait had reached the bottom of his first put in of the match which went 13lb so i was playing catch up all night and as the match went on Johns catch rate increased. John started on the top kit plus one but after getting broken on a fish ,John switched to the left hand margin at a range of 4 metres and by using paste John managed to keep the big fish coming and after 5 hours he also fell one fish behind Paul with his weight of 160-12 but did manage a triple wammy of framing in tonights match, claiming the peg king of Richard Doolan and best of all claiming another victory against me in our seasons battle.

Another point to raise to our visiting anglers please all read the rules prior to fishing as again two rules were infringed on in tonights match and that was big fish being retained in keepnets WHICH IS NOT ALLOWED. These fish are very expensive and it is the welfare of the fish that come first and that is why the rule was put in place to start with. John has already increased the weight limit to 10lb max but to see fish of 11-08 in nets is disapointing but unfair to the anglers that get off their box to weigh theirs so all anglers co-operation is appreciated on this rule.
Just a thought if you are having trouble catching the carp, for the second match running Vespe / Miracle Baits sponsored Chris Telling has put another big bag of silvers on the scales all 54-00 of them. Chris now takes worm as he believes this is what the skimmers prefer and also it wont be long before the first angler that has a real go for them will catch over 100lb of that i am sure as there are lots of these fish in the 2 -5 lb bracket.
