Easter Festival 2013 Day 2. 31st March 2013

 20120908_170548

King of the lake for 2013 smashed by Andy Quarmby.

John tells me that today when he got out of the caravan the entire lake was cover in ice up to 10mm due to the minus 3 degrees temperature last night.

His first job was to board the boat and break the ice up giving the anglers half a chance of a good days fishing which is a shame after a promising start to the festival, but as the first anglers arrived most of the swims were fishable { well done John }. The day started with bright sunshine but due to the floating ice the match was delayed by an extra 15 minutes to give the anglers a chance to set up and clear some floating ice out of the lake. Just as the all in was called the weather changed as it got cloudier and much colder and with a swirling wind made for fishing the long pole a much more difficult option.

John also tells me that a few anglers were into fish straight away and that there were quite a few carp lost too as it was very cold making it a challenge for the anglers with cold hands and there were also some tackle breaks making it also an expensive day. The small lake again was a challenge for those anglers targeting the carp and yesterdays top two anglers { Kevan Orr and Geoff Edwards} on day one slumped to 3rd and 5th in A section. The winner of this section was Micheal Corsini fishing peg 2 on the bottom bank and Micheal bounced back from his disaster from last place in C section on day one to first place with 66-06 { well done Micheal }.

B section was a straight battle between Johnny Broadbent on peg 8 and Derek Hammond on peg 32 as they both caught carp and in the end Johnny just stayed ahead to win the section with his weight of 50-05 to Derek’s 41-11.

The main battle and drama happened in C section where the fish had gathered in the deep part of the lake pegs 24,26 , 14 and 16 which is where they hide when it gets cold and Middy sponsored angler Andy Quarmby defied the conditions to catch carp to double figures and smash the the lake king for 2013 with his fantastic weight for these temperatures of 214-05 .

Andy caught his carp at long range 16 metres fishing with maggots on the deck which was quite a feat considering the windy conditions and with his section win today gives him a perfect score of two points and the current lead of the festival.

The drama in this section was at the end of the match just as the all out was being called Danny Deakin hooked a big carp in which he was given the 15 minutes overtime allowed to get the fish in the net but with his elastic being underpowered he could not get it close to the bank in time and he failed by one minute to get it in the net and the fish did not count although it went 15-10.

Had Danny got the fish in time it would of affected the top of the leader board as the 2nd, 3rd and 4th anglers were only seperated by 3-03 in this section { good effort though Danny }.

The festival enters its final day tomorrow and it is still wide open for any of the top seven anglers to win the three day event so please come back tomorrow for the final results.

Easter Festival 2013 Day 1. 30th March 2013.

The Rolfslake fish decide to have a feed today.

Today saw the start of the 2013 Rolfslake Easter Festival and the expectations were that the fish would finally have a feed as in the preceeding weeks the lake had fished really hard.

After a discussion about payouts at the start due to a small turnout than expected the anglers from far and wide got down to the business of drawing their section sequence for the next three days and who their opposition were going to be. The festival is decided on points with the winner of each section getting one point and the last in section gets 6 points ,so the angler with the lowest points score over three days wins the festival.

As i arrived towards the end of the match John tells me the anglers were greeted with a bright warm day turning cold and windy towards the end { i can vouch for that as i was freezing just doing the weights }. Dave Whiteman on 8 was the first to catch a carp on 8 closley followed by Danny Deakin on 7 but for the rest it was a case of being patient and hoping the carp would turn up. On peg 38 Anthony Flint was giving a great demonstration of catching silvers fishing at 13 metres as i had never seen a pole been shipped back so fast as Anthony caught over 100 silver fish for his final weight of 42-05 which did include one small carp.

In the main lake Andy Quarmby was catching all that swam as he caught carp fishing long {16 metres } down his right hand edge and bream and perch fishing 13 metres out in front for his weight of 78-12. Chris Telling on 10 was into a run of bream by feeding worn and even managed to catch a carp to boot but as it got calmer the bited were harder to come by.

The main battle for top spot today was between Geoff Edwards on 16 and Kevan Orr { Hall Bait an Tackle } on 24 straight opposite who caught big carp between them. Kevan was fishing long straight out fishing maggot for his 8 carp to big double figures which was even more impressive considering the windy conditions for his final weight of 91-02 and just one small carp in front of Geoff { Reading Angling Centre } who was fishing corn at 16 metres but Geoff caught 7 carp but they were slightly bigger for his final weight of 87-10.

Normally on these festivals the fishing gets better on days 2 and 3 as the fish get used to anglers fishing all around the lake and putting feed in so i have a good feeling that the weights and weather will improve and i think that all the anglers are still in with a chance of victory as long as they have a plan B.

We will do our best to keep you all informed with the weights as quickly as possible and will try also to get some photos as well.

Rolfslake Wednesday Open 20th March 2013.

When will it ever get warm ?.

It was nice to see a few more anglers down the lake hoping that the carp would finally have a feed but a very cold day put paid to that except for Ade Williams who tells me that it was not cold { Ade it felt like -2 buddy } so a tough day lay ahead .

There was a breeze blowing into the carpark bank making it very tough to fish the long pole but on the motorway bank it looked flat calm so John decided that we were all going to fish C section pegs 13 round to 26 where there was not even a sign of a fish so most anglers started on the bomb rod fishing either maggots or corn to try and induce a bite but it was very cold so you had to drop a bait right in front of a fish to get a fish which only Pete Arnold managed to do for his one and only carp and the only fish caught on the rod today.

In first place today was Les Darvill who was sheltered on peg 13 who managed to catch 4 big carp fishing a combination of corn and maggot hookbaits fishing on the deck at a range of 9-11 metres for his first win down at Rolfslake with his weight of 42-04 which also included a few silvers { well done Les }.

Todays winner Les Darvill.

In second place was Acorn Anglings owner Tony Gee who was fishing peg 15 and it was also a case of wait for the fish to move in and from where i could see Tony was fishing short feeding quite heavy for this time of the year but managed to catch 3 big carp for 36lb and a few silvers for his weight of 38-09 which were caught on i believe also on corn and maggots

Second place Acorn Anglings Tony Gee.

Completing the frame was Mike Allen sandwiched between Les and Tony on peg 14 and after catching a carp by the bush to his right Mike found two more fishing 7-8 metres straight out in front but again it looked like Mike was also feeding quite heavy on both lines using again what looked like Maggots.

Ade Williams down for the day.

After the match Pete Arnold fished on for about another half an hour and was rewarded with 3 big carp for about 40lb fishing a pellet feeder using corn as he was convinced the fish would come and he was not disappointed.

Pete Arnold with another big Rolfslake carp.

One observation that Pete Arnold and i made today was although it was very hard going the fish wanted some bait to feed on as both Tony and Mike proved . Even Pete after fishing the bomb with a single grain of corn produced only one carp when he switched to the pellet feeder after the match he caught 3 fish straight away. In my case i had been using a small pot to feed with but when i changed to a big pot i caught two carp straight away { coincidence we were not sure } but it could of been the carp were happy to feed later in the match who knows.

The Pirate pulls another point back against John.

As for me and John it was a tough day as John managed a very small carp for Rolfslake all of 3-04 which was his only fish of the day although he tried the bomb, pole and waggler but he could not buy a bite and even though he struggled to catch that did not stop him from giving me my normal dose of abuse which all the anglers love to hear. That stopped with about 45 minutes to go as i had only caught 8 silvers including a1lb perch because when after putting on 4 maggots and going back out on my 14 metre line the float settled then buried and a 10lb carp was on its way to the net only to hear John call me a lucky chap or something like that as i could not hear him properly due to me laughing at him. Next put in and the same thing happened and this time the carp was only 9lb but i did not hear anything from the other side of the lake as my final weight went 20-07 to John’s 3-04 but we both had a good laugh as is the normal way down the lake during the Wednesday opens.

The score now stands at

Rolfslake Wednesday Open 13th March 2013.

Another tough day down the lake.

Today as i arrived there was a club match just about to start in the big lake which had about 10 anglers all lined up along the car park bank pegs 22 to 32 leaving the 5 anglers that turned up to fish a walk off match anywhere else on the lake.

The weather was sunny but cold, getting very cold towards the middle and end of the match with the added bonus of a brisk snow shower just for good measure and compared to the same time last year was a whopping 16 degrees colder so that currently explained why the carp are reluctant to get around the lake and have a feed. The story of the day was that the club anglers were struggling to catch carp with only a couple landed during the day and Graham who was pleasure fishing on peg 34 had caught 4 carp to 15lb but it was very slow going.

In our match the only one into fish early was John who had caught 5 tiny perch from peg 13 but apart from that the bites were hard to come by. After Graham had packed up from peg 34 Pete Arnold casted a bomb over to the bush on the far bank fishing corn and was rewarded with 7 carp to 7lb to win the day with 43-04 { well done Pete }. Just to prove that perseverence does pay off to those that stick at it John Bennett who only had 8 ounces up to the last hour managed to catch a small carp of 4lb and the carp that eventually beat me that went 14lb { thanks John } for his final weight of 18-11.

John gains another point

It serves me right that at the weigh-in i left two keepnets in the water to trick John into thinking that i had caught some carp so when he came round there was no smile thinking i had beaten him so i weighed my silvers first for 5-01 and on bringing in the second net he was waiting for the splash only for the net to be empty only for him to say was that all.

John was telling everyone he had caught only 5 perch so when they came up they were really small and only weighed 8 ounces and just as i was laughing at his poor attempt he pulled his other net that was hidden from view. There was me thinking that John had tried to play the same trick on me as i had done to him my heart sank as i heard the the two carp splashing in the water as he raised his net from the water only to see him laughing behind me { very funny John }.

The two carp in Johns hidden net.

Rolfslake Wednesday Open 6th March 2013.

The sun shines at last.

John tells me that it was busy down the lake with people fishing the open match, also there was a club match as well with the anglers from Witney AC down today and also a couple of pleasure anglers in the small lake.

The weather was warm to start with a slight breeze blowing into the big lake which did trigger the fish into having a feed today but later in the match when it the clouds came over it got much colder and the bites were hard to come by. The story of todays match was that anglers were into fish quite quickly today with also a few lost { John alone lost 5 on peg 18 } but as the match went on it got harder but at least the fish were moving around for a change.

Todays winner was inform angler and lake regular Kev Dolton who today was on motorway bank peg 13 and Kev had an enjoyable day fishing long down the edge to his right fishing on the deck using corn hookbait to catch a hard earned 12 carp for 100-03 and first place { well done Kev }. In second place was Dave Whiteman who was on the opposite bank this time peg 24 and Dave was also into carp fishing pole and corn for a mainly carp net of 76-03 followed in third place by Andy Rayment who fished the waggler and corn and also caught carp for his final weight of 47-07.

The other big battle was father against son { Paul and Micheal Corsini } and this time junior Micheal had no answer to dads fishing skills as Paul claimed the spoils with his weight of 35-09 to Micheals 26-02 { well done Paul }
