Rolfslake’s night match 25th June 2010.

Rolfslake just as the sun was going down.

Match reporter Eddie T-Green.

With lake owner John Bennett starting the first of the 2010 evening/ night  matches the anglers were hoping for a continuation of big weights that followed fron last years matches. The set up for these matches were very simple you drew your peg at 6.30pm and fish 7.30 to half past midnight, with the floodlights being switched on when it got too dark to see your float.

As the anglers gathered at the draw it was actually nice to be able to fish this match  as i was able to finish work on time for a change. With only the big lake in for this first match the anglers were not too fussed where they wanted to draw as long as they were near a floodlight, but that was not a problem as John and Pauline to great expense had got lots of lights to go round the lake.

With the anglers having drawn their pegs there was only one left for me and as i took it out and turned it over peg 23 was my challenge for the night but it was also going to be a challenge for John as he was next to me on flyer peg 22 and he was going to get the usual stick that goes when we fish together. As Paul Jay called all in i returned to my peg got my top kit filled my cup full of bait went to ship out and could not find my number four section which John had said he heard drop in , smelling a rat i could not believe that he continued fishing whilst trying to stop himself from laughing as he had put my number four section inside the number five { nice one John 1 nil to you }. The smile on his face was wiped off 1 minute later as my paste rig settled then buried with a nine pound carp coming out a couple of minutes later. Around the lake the anglers on the carp park bank were all catching with Mark Chard on peg 32 catching more than most but was concious that Neil Riddy on peg 9 was keeping up with him, and for the next couple of hours fish were being caught from all around the lake as the fish were getting confident feeding late into the evening. At around 9.45 just as looking at your float was near impossible John turned on the lights ,and i can tell you it was no different that fishing in the daylight as each swim had its own light except Mark Orchard who had two one for his swim and one pointing directly into my eyes {thanks Mark}. For the rest of the match many carp were caught and many were lost in what was a really enjoyable match under the stars and it is really a challenge playing fish to 19-00 in the dark when you can’t see them .

In first place today was Mark Chard on peg 32 by the hut who had his son for company, and Mark fished the bush to his left just down the first slope ,fishing on the deck using red meat for hookbait. Mark fed fairly heavy to keep the fish in his swim and was rewarded with many fish to double figures in his final weight of 253-04 {well done Mark }. Just to show how many fish were in his peg Mark allowed his son to have a go and in ten minutes caught nearly more than Geoff and John. In second place and giving Mark a good run for his money was Neil Riddy opposite on peg 9 and Neil fished the paste just in front of the bush to his right and again caught big fish in his weight of 229-04. Completing the frame was Wednesdays open  winner Mark Newbold who was amazingly fish just one peg off were he caught his massive weight in midweek. The funny thing Mark told me was that Paul Jay was feeding the bush to his left on peg 28 and Mark would fish to the right of it and steal Paul’s fish from him. After five hours Mark had just kept in front of the chasing pack with his weight of 176-00 and his second pick-up in a week.

After the match the anglers were served a lovely barbeque by Pauline and John helped also by Gemma Doyle which the anglers thoroughly enjoyed and they would like to say thanks to both for a really enjoyable evening.

John will be holding a few more night matches this year so if you would like to experience fishing with a difference please keep an eye out for the next date which will be posted shortly, places are limited due to the number of lights available and the health and safety that is required with so many anglers around the lake.

Larry Teepot Invitational. 26th-27th June 2010

The night before

Larry Teepots crew descended on the lake for their yearly mini festival. Expectations were high as the lake had produced some good weights the night before on the first night match of the year. There is another night match on Friday 9th of July if anyone reading is interested by the way. Call John to book in please.

Saturday morning people were woke to the sound of John mowing the grass ready for the campers to pitch their tents.

John Bennett on the mower

The weather for the day was lovely and sunny.

Nice sunny day at the lake

Now if you have been to the lake and seen how neat the grass if mowed and you wondered how he gets under the trees here is a short demonstration…. 😀

httpvh://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GN3kNWh82Y0

Soon the car park filled up with people that were going to be fishing. With the grass mowed stunt style some people started putting up there tents next to the people that had camped over on the Friday night.

Butlins hasn't got scenery like this

The format for the 2 days was 12pm draw on the Saturday fishing 2pm- 7pm and 11am draw fishing 1pm – 6pm on the Sunday. Saturday night John and Pauline were also putting on a BBQ for people that wanted it.

With pegs 32 and 9 framing on the night match both with 200lb weights it was clear to see where people wanted to draw. Onto the draw. Larry was unable to attend the weekend due to personal reasons so Jay had kindly stepped in and did all the arranging and organising. Top job mate 🙂

With the draw out the way everyone set off for their pegs and had plenty of time to set up and get prepared. For his efforts organising Jay was rewarded with peg 9 and was quite chuffed. 😀

A few pics now from before the Saturday match.

Andy on peg 6

Round the lake there were plenty of fish being caught. But Andy on peg 6 was putting together a stunning weight. Favoured pegs 9 and 32 were also producing plenty of fish. Jay on peg 9 was fishing 6 meters in front of him and to the bush on his right while Justin on peg 32 was catching off and behind the bush to his left. A section was the only section to produce all 100lb plus weights on day 1.

With the match over it was time for the weigh in and that told the story for the day. Andy on peg 6 had won day one closely followed by Jay on peg 9. Third on the day was Justin on peg 32.

Jay hope to do a double ton

Smoke signals to say the match was over 😀

The BBQ went on till past 3am 😯 Most people left the lake to go and stay in the travel lodge whilsy other retired to their tents to get some kip ready for Sunday.

Day Two.

Someone had a late night 😀

Day two started of nice and early with people getting to the lake ready for the earlier draw. The weather today was even hotter than Saturday so most people wanted to draw in the shade. With the draw done promptly everyone set off to their pegs and set up. Today also England were playing Germany in the world cup and John had set up a small TV so he could watch the game and keep everyone updated with the score.

John setting up the tv for the footy match

With the sound of the bell the match was under way and soon became clear that Andy was going to have another good day, this time fishing on peg 8. Andy was fishing 16 meters straight across to the far bank to pick up fish regularly. Fishcake on peg 32 was struggling and also Simon on peg 9 was struggling. It seems the fish had moved round into the little lake.

Elsewhere people where catching steadily but the lake was not fishing as good as on the Saturday for some people.

Messing up a good peg

After the match it was clear who had won the day. Andy for the second day running had fished a superb match on peg 8 and had been rewarded for fishing long all day with a fine win.

Budgie who had been on peg 2 today and who was also wanted to do his first Rolfslake ton managed just that today. Well done mate, on to your double next 😀

Budgie hoping he had done the ton

So pleased to have done the ton. Nice picture 😀

Wednesday Open. 23rd June 2010

Today’s open saw a hot and sunny day at the lake. Conditions were perfect for some big weights and that’s exactly what happened.

Mark Newbold fishing from peg 28 caught fish to 17lb including a 17-4 mirror carp by fishing paste at 8m. John Bennett fishing from peg 32 also had some big fish John was fishing the bush with paste and pellet to catch fish up to 16lb.

Mark eventually came out on top to become the new Lake King with a fantastic weight.

Red Lion AC Match. 20th June 2010

John Bennetts new freind

Today Red Lion Angling Club visited the lake for a club match. The weather today was vastly different to yesterday. It was bright and warm with an occasional cold north wind blowing across the lake.

Mark Brown fish a tidy match from peg 34 today catching 216lb 14oz to take the win. Peg 8 which was not fished yesterday also appeared in the frame. Nick Chaple put together 166lb 8oz to take second place. Completing the frame was Tony Kaye fishing on peg 7 putting together a weight of 142-8.

As you can see from the results the rest of the field was very close indeed.

Well done lads, hope you had a good visit to the lake.

Jinx Series, Match 3. 19th June 2010

The Jinx squad role up to the lake again today for their third match. All the usual suspects assemble with the usual anticipation of catching a big weight from the lake but what has the lake in store for them today … ?

The weather today was a mixture of cloud with sunny spells, the cloud were very dark and it looked like it was going to rain also. The wind had also picked up creating a large ripple on the lake. The carpark filled up early today with most people getting to the lake around 10.30. Even Malc was there early 😯

Jinx Squad waiting for the draw

Keith74, Rolfslake virgin. Excited to be at the lake.

Ant Haywood and Marcuss Burgess

Before the draw could take place there was a small matter of the Minx hat…. Paul Dolby who should have been wearing the hat for this match had called in sick 🙄 So Gem decided the best way for the hat to still get an airing was to put all the peoples names she had MINXED into a hat and draw a random name……

Gem announcing the hat victim lineup

Gem Drawing the name

The chosen one is..........

Steve Wilson.

Despite a lot of protesting Steve still wore the hat…. For some of the match, after he got it back out the lake after the wind blew it in 😀

Suits you sir

With the draw and Hat handing out the way everyone trundled off to their pegs. Today would be the last time people would be fishing in their sections as the next match will see everyone drawing for sections again for the remaining 3 matches. This means they will draw from the hat with all the pegs in there, if you draw A section you will then be in B section for match 5 and C for the final match of the series. It seems to be a good idea so far.

With the draw running a little late people did not have as long to set up to day as fishing was from 1pm to 6pm. Early speculation was Gem would draw peg 8 and proceed to Minx everyone but flyer pegs 8 and 9 remained in the bag unpicked 😯 Gem did however draw a unusual peg… Peg 5 which is not normally fished. With no one else previously fishing the peg all she had to do was catch a fish and she would be Peg Queen 😀

Gem Doyle on peg 5

With the match underway both Clive on peg 11 and Peter on peg 10 were straight in to fish. Clive managed to net his with no problem but the same could not be said for Peter. His fish was fouled hooked and being quite stubborn. Peter stood up and decided to give it a bit of ooomph, his topkit could not take the pressure and proceeded to snap into 7 pieces 😀 😀 He still managed to get the fish in though, well done Peter.

Peter Morton on peg 10

Wonder if this can be repaired 😀

After about an hour the shout went out from Gem signalling she had caught a fish. Gem was fishing the feeder on peg 5 with a banded pellet.

Peg 5 was very windy.

Matt Edwards on peg 7 was having a few too, this made up for the lack of fish for him on the last match.

Matt on peg 7 catching a few

At this point Malc And Gem had been away visiting Family in hospital for a couple of hours but Malc still managed to come back feed, put his rig out and catch a fish right away…must have been solid 😛

Malc on peg 38 using a number 6 elastic by the looks of it 😀

A few fish were coming from the little lake but another few causalities also happened. Kev on peg 4 was shipping back after hooking a fish to find his topkit missing when he shipped back and Tony on peg 2 also broke a topkit.

Kev on peg 4 before his topkit did a submarine impression

Dave Moore struggling on peg 36

Dai on form from peg 34

Talking of breaking things, Steve Wilson on peg 32 was breaking rig and topkits like there was no tomorrow but was still managing to get a few in.

The fishing around the lake was very patching. Some people were catching and other people were not catching, me being one of them. Clive on peg 11 had been picking off fish from his 6 meter line and his right hand margin and was slowly building up a good weight for the day.

Clive Pritchard with another carp.

In the net, Well done.

Clives Fish. 13lb 8oz although it did look bigger.

With the end of the matching nearing people that had been catching well were Clive on Peg 11, Jon on peg 32, Dai on 34, Matt on peg 7 and Marcus Burgess on peg 28. It was going to be a close match.

With the weigh in complete The winner of the day was to be Clive Pritchard who had fished a tidy match finding fish from his various swims. Well done Clive, well fished mate.

Well done to everyone who caught carp on a very hard day at the lake. One more thing had to be done before everyone left the lake……. THE HAT 😯

Now I must point out that anyone Minxed today should hang their heads in shame 😀 as Gem only really fished for 3 hours. With 7 names to choose from who would the hat go to…..

Despite Gem Minxing her boyfriend Simon Mound good and proper there could be only one contender for the hat…. Ade Williams, who had avoided being Minxed for nearly 3 years. Welcome to the club mate. I will make you a nice cuppa tea 😀

Ade Will don the hat for match 4 unless he falls ill 😀

A few other notables for this match were that Marcus Burgess weighed in 4 fish for a massive 67lb 4oz

  • 18lb
  • 16lb
  • 18lb 4oz
  • 15lb

Well done Marcus.

Clive stole John Bennetts lake king title from peg 11.

Gem also took a peg King title to become the peg queen of peg 5.

Ade despite been Minxed and having to wear the hat still picked up money for the guess the weight competition. He also took the peg king title for peg 20 😯 😀

Despite been stone cold last and been Minxed to the extreme Simon Mound fishing on peg 13 managed to catch the elusive golden orfe. It fell to double caster from his left hand margin swim. This was the same Fish Eddie caught a few weeks back. Thanks to Peter for taking the picture.

Simon Mounds only consolation for been last on the day

The next match is a fair way away. It takes place on the 24th July. Plenty of time to prepare rigs and to ponder on how the lake will fish next time.

Rolfslake Wednesday Open 16th June 2010.

Match Reporter Eddie T-Green.

After the massive pleasure weight of 800lb caught by Ginger on peg 8 on Tuesday, the anglers were hoping that Rolfslake would not fish like Jekyll and Hide as it has been quite tough these last few weeks as the fish finish off spawning.

With turn out low due to the football the anglers assembled at the draw hoping for a good draw and a good days fishing and all i was hoping was for a victory over John Bennett to go 5-4 up in our seasons battle.

As the anglers drew their pegs and went off there were two remaining left and as big Dave insisted on drawing last { he is a lot bigger than me } i drew peg 9 leaving Dave peg 22 sorry Dave.

With the lake still fishing hard all i can tell you is that many anglers still had fish fizzing in their pegs and were still foul hooking lots of fish, so hopefully for round 3 of the Jinx League the fish will settle down and feed properly.

The weather today was sunny and warm with a nice breeze blowing form the North so this should of helped the anglers but all it did was make presentation hard as the tow on the lake was going the other way. In first place today was Rolfslake regular Chris Lovelock fishing opposite me on peg 32 by the hut and after a very slow start with Chris catching a couple of fish shallow on pellet decided after a few hours to fish the bush to his left and never looked back.

Chris from where i could see was using pellet feeding regular fishing just in front of the bush down the first ledge, and Chris was rewarded with a run of big fish {Chris had over 100lb of weighers on the board } that just kept in front and after 5 hours had a weight of 217-12 for victory and got him the peg king for peg 32. In second place was me Eddie and i also had a good day, fishing 8 metres to the front of the bush to my right and by using my X4 paste mix was able to have 5 hours of playing tug of war with the fish as they tried to get in the bush. Some of my bite were really savage as the pole was pulled around as the fish really wanted the paste and a poor 4th hour stopped me catching Chris, but it was after 2 hours that John Bennett hit a new low. As i took a fish to be checked by John and was returning to the weigh station , John crept to my peg and took a big chunk of paste from my bucket and was seen running back off to peg 10 laughing {nice one John } but it did not help him as he lost plenty of fish with it. After five hours i had caught 189-12 of carp all on paste and had an enjoyable day. Competing the frame was Mark Chard on peg 24 and John tells me Mark was using pellet on the pole fishing long to catch his weight of 88-00 with fish to double figures.
