Herbie Invitational Match. 30th May 2010

Carp on the feed at the lake.

Herbie and Friends had the lake for the day today. 17 anglers turned up on quite a sunny day. Many of the guys had not fished the lake before and were full of anticipation after hearing stories about big weights. We had the whole lake so there was a bit of space between the anglers.

The draw took place at 10 ish and fishing today was from 12-5pm. Plenty of time for everyone to get set up. John Bennett went round and helped out the guys that needed some info.

Simple trying a bit of shallow fishing on peg 30

Orinoco on peg 13 had hooked in to his first rolfslake carp and was experiencing the power of the fish, In the process of landing the fish he managed to loose the landing net of his handle 😀 John and Pauline were on hand quickly running round with a spare net to help him.

Orinoco looking for his landing net

Lee on peg 7 had been catching well along with Roland down on peg 2. Having a slow start Dave on peg 26 had worked out where the fish were and was slowing building up a terrific weight. Larry on peg 9 was struggling but was ever determined to do his Rolfs Ton. Simple on peg 30 had managed 5 fish shallow and then got fish feeding on a 5 meter line.  Dave bull down on peg 24 had a cracking start on the pellet waggler fishing in to the middle of the lake but had lost the fish as the sun went off the lake.

A special Mention goes to big Ron on peg 28 who had foul hooked a carp. It had taken him round the bush to his left and then under both platform legs and out the other side towards Simples peg. He did some magic elastic waggling and somehow managed to get the fish from under the platform adn round the bush and back in to his peg only to land it. To say I was amazed would be an understatement  😀 Well done Ron

With the match over and the weigh in complete it was clear that the first timers had caught plenty of fish and were impressed with the lake. The weights were also impressive with Roland down on peg 2 managing a fantastic 181-8. This was also good enough to give Roland the Peg King for peg 2. Dave on peg 26 had been catching plenty of fish, enough to give him second place with a great weight of 172-12. Completing the frame was Lee on peg 7 with 148-12, Lee had the luxury of fishing peg 7 on his own as peg 8 never got drawn.

Match Fishing Scene 3 day Festival. 27th-29th May 2010

Church007, Festival organiser.

Martin had arranged a 3 Day festival over at Match Fishing Scene. Banter on the forum had been building up about the Welsh beating the English so who would come out top after the 3 days ??

Most of the guys fishing the festival were also camping over at the lake. Thursday morning at the lake it looked like some gypo’s had moved in and set up camp 😀

Thursday morning saw glorious sunshine after Wednesday nights torrential rain.  24 anglers all gathered for the draw at 12am

Hi de hi campers

The campers woke up to a sunny morning.

Everyone gathering for the draw

Budgie and Dave Moore

John Bennett refreshing everyone with the lake rules

With the draw done everyone had plenty of time to get to their peg and set up. Fishing would be from 2pm – 7pm. The match format was 3 sections of 8 anglers. Section A was pegs 2, 4, 6, 7, 34, 36, 38 and 40. Section B was pegs 8, 9, 10, 13, 28, 29, 31 and 32. Section C was pegs 14, 16, 18, 19, 21, 23, 24 and 26.

John Bennett was going round helping people with their pegs, giving them info on how to fish it but some people were just beyond help it seems.

Fred Parker on Peg 9. Should have gone to spec savers 😀

Church on peg 19

Ian McCulloch on peg 26

Budgie on peg 31. He was peg king for all of one day 😀

Day one has seen some good weights from around the lake while others were struggling. Chris Telling was having a blinding day on peg 7 catching on corn and paste at 14.5 meters. Down in C section Pellet King  and Jonny B had been catching well, Pellet King catching shallow on 6mm banded pellet to take the section. B section had been won by Nick Merry on peg 13 catching long and short in the margins and 14.5m shallow.

Day 2

The anglers moved round the lake for day two in to the next section. Expectations were high for some good weights today as previous festivals  2nd day always through up some high match weights. With the draw at 12 and fishing from 2pm – 7pm again everyone had plenty of time to set up again.

Despite all the expectations the lake had fished harder on day 2. Two double tons had still come from the lake though, Phil Powell on peg 31 had fished a blinder on a peg he did not fancy after drawing it. He had to fish hard for it though, fishing at 16 meters shallow on banded pellet. Second double was from Pete Archer on peg 9 and was just a few fish away from beating Phil.

Mick Lane had won C Section fishing shallow, in the margin and 5-6 meter line on banded pellet. Pellet King had fished another excellent match in A Section fishing shallow again and in the margins.

Day 3

The weather for the final match had turned for the worst, gone was the sunshine replaced by clouds and rain. Wet weather gear was going to be needed today 🙁

Church cooking his brekkie on the final day

Fishing today for the final match would be earlier. The draw at 10am and fishing 12-5pm. This is to allow people to get away earlier after the presentation. With the draw done and everyone on their pegs setting up in the rain people were hoping for a good days fishing to finish the festival off in style.

Day 3 had fished hard again with only one double ton coming from the lake today. BBQ master Baz Wrexham on peg 34 had bagged up fishing a 5m line on corn winning A Section. B section was won by event organiser Church on peg 8 fishing 16m, down the track and in the bush on his left all with corn. C Section was won surprisingly on peg 21. Kerb Crawler had denied all the odd and produced a winning weight fishing the margins again on corn proving to everyone there was some fish down there after all 😀

Pellet King had only dropped one point over the 3 days. Well fished mate, superb result.

Pete Archer had kindly brought along a trophy for the winner too.

Festival Winner Pellet King

A big thank you to Martin for arranging a superb festival. It was great to meet up with old friends and meeting new ones. The whole event ran smoothly.

The lake was also left how it should be. All littler, fag butts and sick was cleaned up 😀 Thanks to everyone for keeping the place so clean. this will ensure future events like this one can carry on to take place.

On a side note. Simon and Budgie were having a mini battle and Simon lost 2-1 to Budgie. Well done mate 🙁

Thanks for reading, Si and Eddie.

Important Site / Lake rules update.

With the busy club / match / festival season getting into full swing starting this week lake owner John Bennett has asked me to post these current updates to the lake / site rules.

He has had to enforce these rules to start from this Wednesdays open to protect both the fish and the peaceful and pleasant environment that is Rolfslake. The background behind this is that some and i mean a minority have been abusing not only the lakes environment but have been taking John and Pauline’s good nature for granted. It started with when John and Pauline were doing routine lake maintenance around the lake and to their horror found human excrement in the bushes together with toilet paper in the bushes by the car park and if that were not bad enough found more together with toilet paper behind the bushes at peg 18. Now to say these people are disgraceful people with no thoughts for fellow visitors can’t be stressed enough but the fact that there is a serviced toilet on site together with toilet paper no more that a minute away means that these people do not care.

From now on any visitor found not using the toilet to have a crap will be banned and if this person / persons are affiliated to a club then the ban extends to the club as well so please all club match organisers please inform all your members so there is no confusion.

The next rule is for any visitors that camp on site during festivals and long weekends .

As John and Pauline allow visitors to stay on site for FREE the only thing that he asks for is that all rubbish is removed with the visitors at the end of their stay ,as on the last occasion that he allowed people to stay not only did they leave litter on the ground when they left they also filled two rubbish bags of rubbish for John and Pauline to dispose of. From this week if any campers leave rubbish then there will a stop from this week of all camping on the lake and as John knows the importance that this will affect a lot of visitors he does not want to have to enforce this but he will. This also extends to anglers that leave litter behind for him to clear up , and that they will not be allowed to come back this year. For the people that do not know John, what they need to understand is that he is a very committed person as far as the lake goes but is very easy going and does not put to many rules as far as fishing goes so he will not enjoy banning any visitors that do not abide by the rules that spoil it for the rest of the visitors.

The next rule enforcement extends to the match anglers starting this Wednesday.

The anglers are asked to respect the fish and abide with the NO fish at 10lb or over to be retained in keepnets, as over the last few weeks there has been a disregard of this rule by anglers who do not want to waste time visiting the weigh stations. ANY angler found with fish of 10lb and over will have the fish disqualified and if there is more that one then the anglers total weight will be disqualified . There will be checks made on all anglers weigh-ins to ensure that this rule is not broken, so please do not be offended if you are asked to have any fish individually weighed.

John has invested a lot of time and money in the lake and will NOT accept any fish loses due to negligent anglers not abiding by the rules. Also please to all match organisers please respect the no more than 40lb in the weigh slings at weigh in time as they damage the fish at the bottom of the weigh sling and with individual fish costing hundreds of pounds each this is not acceptable.

John and Pauline are easy going owners but will not have their goodwill abused by a minority of visitors and the expense of the thousands of well behaved visitors.

Rolfslake is for the enjoyment of all anglers so he does not apologise for the welfare of the fish and the environment.

Saturday Open. 22nd May. 2010

Little Horsey on the mend

Todays open turned out to be on the hottest day at the lake so far this year. On arrival carp were seen to be spawning around the lake. Also thousands of tiny roach could be seen flitting around the surface meaning that the roach must have also spawned.

10 anglers turned up today to fish in the blazing sun. After the draw John Bennett only had one thing in mind when drawing peg 16 and that was to regain his peg king title that Mick Lane took from him on last Wednesdays open match.

He managed to do just that as well along with Geoff and Ginger also taking the peg king title too.

The Cartel Fight Back episode 2.

Firstly i would like to thank all my fishing buddies for their kind birthday wishes as it was my birthday down on the lake yesterday. In a dream that i had a few days earlier i was to catch carp after carp on my birthday and not only win the match but i was to beat all the cartel members { Bennett, Powell and Lane } and my Nemesis Jeff Edwards and Paul Jay, so one out of five was not be considered a good days fishing.

As we waited for the draw to commence i could see the pleasure anglers catching along the car park bank on the small lake so this was looking promising for a good days fishing, and as a nice suprise John and Paul had decorated the lawn mower with a happy birthday sign , a birthday candle on top {not good on a petrol mower} and the keys to have a ride around the lake {they certainly know how to push the boat out}.

As the draw took place i was hoping to draw the car park bank from pegs 26 to 32 and as i opened my hand lucky peg 7 was in it leaving John Bennett the last peg and with it newly pruned peg 9, so i was going to receive plenty of abuse from him and also Phil Powell on peg 6 brilliant.

As the all in was called i was into a fish straight away on my 12 metre line but this was to be a false dawn as i managed to perfect the art of foul hooking fish for the first two hours, and from were i was i could see the anglers on the car park bank all catching so hopefully a good bagging day was awaiting us. Phil Powell on peg 6 was tying with me for the first two hours then his up in the water roach line all of a sudden turned into a carp line and he just pulled away from me bummer !.

As i was restricted with my view of the match all i can tell you is that the winner of todays match was Mick {David Guest} Lane who was to be spoilt for choice on peg 16 on the motorway bank. Today Mick fed three lines, one to his right one to his left and one a little further straight out. Mick fed pellet and was fishing with paste as hook bait and he tells me that the carp were up on the silt bank very quickly today but he had to resist the temptation to go on it early as if he spoked one early they might of disapeared, so a combination of fishing the two margin swims kept the fish coming. At the end of five hours Mick had caught fish to 15lb in his final weight of 191-08 and only one fish off the double ton but at least he got his name on the peg kings board { well done Mick }.

Todays winner Cartel member Mick Lane.

In second place and on a good run of form was Pat Pritchard who was fishing current form peg 26 on the car park bank. Pat today was having a real ding dong battle with Liam Barry on peg 28 and after catching fish for fish on shallow rigs Pat decided to add more sections of pole to fish further out and by doing so stole the fish away from Liam which managed to keep him ahead. Pat used banded pellet as hook bait feeding regular to keep the fish active and after an enjoyable match put 182-08 on the scales and only one fish off victory.

Completing the frame and getting very close to his fish as he played them in my peg was Phil Powell on small lake peg 6, who started off fishing on the bottom with pellet switching to up in the water fishing at depths between 2 and 4 feet and ended up fishing the margins with paste { god Phil is good }. Phil caught fish to double figures from both his shallow and edge pegs and ended with 170-04 and only three fish off victory.

The amazing thing about today during the weigh-in was the amount of anglers happy to see me fail today especially the Cartel and Paul Jay as they kept reminding me every time someone beat me. Also today i found out that Jeff Edwards needs more maths tuition as he certainly can’t count because he told me he was struggling with about 85lb only to end up with 144-02 and another place down the line i went. The person that was giving me the most stick was John Bennett followed by Paul Jay but as John was fishing flyer peg 9 i was always going to struggle against him put i smashed Pauls weight to leave him second last after his victory last week.

The new visiting anglers had a great day and promised to return, and just as the terminator would say I WILL BE BACK to battle again against the Cartel in my quest to be one of the first anglers to top 400lb this year. The score now stands at John Bennett 4 me 2 so until our next report tight lines Eddie and Simon.
