Pre Pairs Weekend Invitational Match.6th Aug 2010

Maggotville getting warmed up *All pictures Click-able for larger view*

Dave Collier had booked the lake for a pre Maggotdrowing pairs weekend match. He invited some friends and Jinx members. This was to be a warm up match in preparation for the annual 2 day Maggotdrowning.com pairs weekend. This also allowed those attending to get their tents pitched and settled in.

The draw was at 12.30 and fishing was going to be 2.15 -7.15pm. Me, Gem and Budgie arrived late thanks to the traffic on the M40 so Pauline drew our pegs for us and what a drawing hand she has. Gem was on peg 9, I was on peg 26 and Budgie was on not so much of a good peg, Peg 40. As we arrived people were already setting up. We unloaded the car and got everything in to the tent and headed off to set up with only about 30 minutes to go before the all in was honked by Dave on his Gillette horn 😀

Geoff Palmer on peg 10 was the first person to catch a fish just a couple of minutes after the all-in. People were catching over the big lake and Dave Webster on peg 24 was on the feederless Feeder (as he call’s it) which is basically a pellet cone. He was having plenty of action and was taking an early lead in the big lake.

Clive had drawn peg 32 again after having it on the last Jinx match. He was not impressed to say the least as it was not fishing to its normal standards and he was breaking his pole in the process of getting out the carp from behind the bush.

I had been fishing the feeder for the first 15 minutes while my other lines were fed. I had not set up the pole as I had not had time. John Bennett came round and said he thought the fish would feed shallow, with that said I set up a shallow rig and had a go. It resulted in one fish a 16lb’er 🙂

At this point Dave was storming ahead in the big lake followed by Steve up the corner on peg 22. Ant Haywood over on peg 18 was also catching a few. In the little lake Malc on peg 38 was catching some big un’s and was the only person really catching. Gem was on peg 9 again and having a steady run of fish but struggling to keep the fish out of the left and right bushes.

I was fed up of watching Dave’s rod tip going round so I fed my 5 meter line and went for a walk with the camera.

Feederless Feeder fish 😀

Getting back to my peg I set up the rig for the 5 meter line and went in with a banded pellet, fish on right away and that was the story for the rest of the match for me. A nice steady run of fish. Like everyone else I was also suffering from loosing foul hooked fish 🙁

On the all out Hooter I thought Dave had managed the win but thought I would be close behind him. Word was the little lake had fished poorly and Malc had won that section.  On to the weigh in.

Going round the lake as usual from peg 34 it was clear to see that the little lake had indeed fished hard with Malc catching the most weight with the help of some big fish which have been showing around the lake again. Everyone was eager to see what Gem had done on peg 9 as a lot of people had struggled.

Gem put 52lb on the scales, from that point on people where just hoping not to get Minxed. Ant Heywood on peg 18 put the first ton weight on the board with 109 followed by another from peg 22 fished by Steve Akal. Next was Dave ‘Feederless Feeder’ Webster on peg 24, he weighed in 136lb and was looking good for the win until we weighed in my fish, Just one fish separated us. I put 144lb on the scales to take the win for the day. I was surprised as I thought I had about 120lb but have never been good at guestimates 😀 It was a good battle Dave thank you.

Larry Teepot Invitational. 26th-27th June 2010

The night before

Larry Teepots crew descended on the lake for their yearly mini festival. Expectations were high as the lake had produced some good weights the night before on the first night match of the year. There is another night match on Friday 9th of July if anyone reading is interested by the way. Call John to book in please.

Saturday morning people were woke to the sound of John mowing the grass ready for the campers to pitch their tents.

The weather for the day was lovely and sunny.

Nice sunny day at the lake

Now if you have been to the lake and seen how neat the grass if mowed and you wondered how he gets under the trees here is a short demonstration…. 😀

Soon the car park filled up with people that were going to be fishing. With the grass mowed stunt style some people started putting up there tents next to the people that had camped over on the Friday night.

Butlins hasn't got scenery like this

The format for the 2 days was 12pm draw on the Saturday fishing 2pm- 7pm and 11am draw fishing 1pm – 6pm on the Sunday. Saturday night John and Pauline were also putting on a BBQ for people that wanted it.

With pegs 32 and 9 framing on the night match both with 200lb weights it was clear to see where people wanted to draw. Onto the draw. Larry was unable to attend the weekend due to personal reasons so Jay had kindly stepped in and did all the arranging and organising. Top job mate 🙂

With the draw out the way everyone set off for their pegs and had plenty of time to set up and get prepared. For his efforts organising Jay was rewarded with peg 9 and was quite chuffed. 😀

A few pics now from before the Saturday match.

Andy on peg 6

Round the lake there were plenty of fish being caught. But Andy on peg 6 was putting together a stunning weight. Favoured pegs 9 and 32 were also producing plenty of fish. Jay on peg 9 was fishing 6 meters in front of him and to the bush on his right while Justin on peg 32 was catching off and behind the bush to his left. A section was the only section to produce all 100lb plus weights on day 1.

With the match over it was time for the weigh in and that told the story for the day. Andy on peg 6 had won day one closely followed by Jay on peg 9. Third on the day was Justin on peg 32.

Jay hope to do a double ton

Smoke signals to say the match was over 😀

The BBQ went on till past 3am 😯 Most people left the lake to go and stay in the travel lodge whilsy other retired to their tents to get some kip ready for Sunday.

Day Two.

Someone had a late night 😀

Day two started of nice and early with people getting to the lake ready for the earlier draw. The weather today was even hotter than Saturday so most people wanted to draw in the shade. With the draw done promptly everyone set off to their pegs and set up. Today also England were playing Germany in the world cup and John had set up a small TV so he could watch the game and keep everyone updated with the score.

John setting up the tv for the footy match

With the sound of the bell the match was under way and soon became clear that Andy was going to have another good day, this time fishing on peg 8. Andy was fishing 16 meters straight across to the far bank to pick up fish regularly. Fishcake on peg 32 was struggling and also Simon on peg 9 was struggling. It seems the fish had moved round into the little lake.

Elsewhere people where catching steadily but the lake was not fishing as good as on the Saturday for some people.

Messing up a good peg

After the match it was clear who had won the day. Andy for the second day running had fished a superb match on peg 8 and had been rewarded for fishing long all day with a fine win.

Budgie who had been on peg 2 today and who was also wanted to do his first Rolfslake ton managed just that today. Well done mate, on to your double next 😀

Budgie hoping he had done the ton

So pleased to have done the ton. Nice picture 😀
