TUMBLEY BAY CLUB MATCH 18TH JULY 2010

Today’s visitors to the lake were tumbley bay a.c.they fished10.30 to 3.30 and overall had a very good day.The lake fished well with a 2oo lb + weight and 9 100 lb + weights, It was quite breezy and overcast to start with the sun making an appearance late in the match.

Today’s winner was chris martin who drew peg 10 and started catching at out at 6mtres and later switching to the left margin at 4 metres to complete the bulk of his weight, second place was peter kaye on peg 29 who caught steadily alternating between 11 and 6 metres, third place went to junior angler Gavin miller who used a borrowed feeder rod to good effect on form peg 7.

Hare and Hounds Club match 18th July 2010

Today Rolfslake welcomed the Hare and Hounds angling club from the Telford area, and John tells me that the day was overcast and blustery to start with getting sunnier and warm as the day went on. The anglers had their best visit to the lake yet and all the anglers caught fish but coming out in first place was Steve Rouse who was fishing Wednesdays winning peg 7. Steve fished the feeder across to the far bank grasses and caught fish to double figures fishing meat as hookbait and after 5 hours joined the 200+ club with his final weight of 223-00 { well done Steve }.

In second place was Kye Faulkner who was next to Steve on peg 8 and Kye started off down the track but ended up fishing the bush to his left and again had fish to double figures by fishing paste and meat fished on the deck to catch his weight of 158-00 and keep ahead of the chasing pack. Completing the frame and having a good family battle was Andy Braley who was on form peg 16 on the motorway bank and Andy also had good fish which just kept him ahead of his son Kevin with his weight of 140-00 and 10lb clear of Kevin.

Match Fishing Scene 3 day Festival. 27th-29th May 2010

Church007, Festival organiser.

Martin had arranged a 3 Day festival over at Match Fishing Scene. Banter on the forum had been building up about the Welsh beating the English so who would come out top after the 3 days ??

Most of the guys fishing the festival were also camping over at the lake. Thursday morning at the lake it looked like some gypo’s had moved in and set up camp 😀

Thursday morning saw glorious sunshine after Wednesday nights torrential rain.  24 anglers all gathered for the draw at 12am

Hi de hi campers

The campers woke up to a sunny morning.

Everyone gathering for the draw

Budgie and Dave Moore

John Bennett refreshing everyone with the lake rules

With the draw done everyone had plenty of time to get to their peg and set up. Fishing would be from 2pm – 7pm. The match format was 3 sections of 8 anglers. Section A was pegs 2, 4, 6, 7, 34, 36, 38 and 40. Section B was pegs 8, 9, 10, 13, 28, 29, 31 and 32. Section C was pegs 14, 16, 18, 19, 21, 23, 24 and 26.

John Bennett was going round helping people with their pegs, giving them info on how to fish it but some people were just beyond help it seems.

Fred Parker on Peg 9. Should have gone to spec savers 😀

Church on peg 19

Ian McCulloch on peg 26

Budgie on peg 31. He was peg king for all of one day 😀

Day one has seen some good weights from around the lake while others were struggling. Chris Telling was having a blinding day on peg 7 catching on corn and paste at 14.5 meters. Down in C section Pellet King  and Jonny B had been catching well, Pellet King catching shallow on 6mm banded pellet to take the section. B section had been won by Nick Merry on peg 13 catching long and short in the margins and 14.5m shallow.

Day 2

The anglers moved round the lake for day two in to the next section. Expectations were high for some good weights today as previous festivals  2nd day always through up some high match weights. With the draw at 12 and fishing from 2pm – 7pm again everyone had plenty of time to set up again.

Despite all the expectations the lake had fished harder on day 2. Two double tons had still come from the lake though, Phil Powell on peg 31 had fished a blinder on a peg he did not fancy after drawing it. He had to fish hard for it though, fishing at 16 meters shallow on banded pellet. Second double was from Pete Archer on peg 9 and was just a few fish away from beating Phil.

Mick Lane had won C Section fishing shallow, in the margin and 5-6 meter line on banded pellet. Pellet King had fished another excellent match in A Section fishing shallow again and in the margins.

Day 3

The weather for the final match had turned for the worst, gone was the sunshine replaced by clouds and rain. Wet weather gear was going to be needed today 🙁

Church cooking his brekkie on the final day

Fishing today for the final match would be earlier. The draw at 10am and fishing 12-5pm. This is to allow people to get away earlier after the presentation. With the draw done and everyone on their pegs setting up in the rain people were hoping for a good days fishing to finish the festival off in style.

Day 3 had fished hard again with only one double ton coming from the lake today. BBQ master Baz Wrexham on peg 34 had bagged up fishing a 5m line on corn winning A Section. B section was won by event organiser Church on peg 8 fishing 16m, down the track and in the bush on his left all with corn. C Section was won surprisingly on peg 21. Kerb Crawler had denied all the odd and produced a winning weight fishing the margins again on corn proving to everyone there was some fish down there after all 😀

Pellet King had only dropped one point over the 3 days. Well fished mate, superb result.

Pete Archer had kindly brought along a trophy for the winner too.

Festival Winner Pellet King

A big thank you to Martin for arranging a superb festival. It was great to meet up with old friends and meeting new ones. The whole event ran smoothly.

The lake was also left how it should be. All littler, fag butts and sick was cleaned up 😀 Thanks to everyone for keeping the place so clean. this will ensure future events like this one can carry on to take place.

On a side note. Simon and Budgie were having a mini battle and Simon lost 2-1 to Budgie. Well done mate 🙁

Rolfslake Wednesday Open 7th April 2010

Today saw a few anglers down on the lake either pleasure fishing or practising for a forthcoming club match and then there were us lot ready for another Wednesday open. With fish topping all over the big lake it was decided to fish both the carpark and motorway bank from pegs 14 all the round to 26 as the other anglers were in the small lake and from pegs 27 to 32.

As the draw took place John Bennett stuck his hand in the bag and out came peg 18 {which is John’s new peg 9 } just like magic as all the fish topping were in front of his peg so he was off to it like a shot. I had drawn one of my least favourite pegs peg 14, as with the wind gusting in front of me and the sun in my eyes i was going to have a tough 5 hours. Paul Jay had drawn flyer peg 24 which is great for bomb fishing and the judge { Mike Stimpson} was tucked away in the corner, peg 22 so i had a good view of all the anglers except John who i could hear talking from 5 pegs away.

The weather was a bit of everything rain ,sun and a gusting wind so for some anglers it was going to be easy and the rest it was going to be cold with a touch of blinding sun in your eyes followed by a bank of dark clouds making it look like it was night. As the all-in was called all the anglers on the carpark bank were fishing the tip rod ,whilst the anglers on the motorway bank were fishing the pole fished long and within the first hour everyone that i could see had caught a carp. Most anglers were fishing either banded pellet or corn as hook bait and feeding quite heavy for this time of the year.

In first place today was my fellow Cartel member John Bennett who was on peg 18 and after catching a quick carp on the pole found catching quite difficult after that, and John could be seen trying the bomb , waggler fished shallow, pole fished long and shallow but to no avail. A switch to the deck rig fished long down the edge using soft hooker pellet got the fish going for John towards the end and a run of fish to near 20lb got the win for John with his final weight of 113-00 well done John our score to date is 1-1}. In second Place was Paul Jay on winter flyer peg 24 and by fishing a combination of bomb and pole fished long on the deck, using both corn and banded 8mm pellet feeding quite heavy, Paul picked up a run of small fish that kept John on his toes and at the end was a roach short of a ton weight and he ended up with 99-08. Completing the frame was Mark on peg 26 who fished similar to Paul and ended up with 77-08.

After the match all of the anglers complained of lost big fish and a lot of foul hooked fish as they travelled up and down the water depths giving a lot of false bites. If the weather warms up i think the lake will start to give up some good weights as the fish appeared to want to feed properly today as in my swim it was like a jaccuzi for most of the match.

John Tells me there will be Saturday open for the next three weeks draw 10am fish 11-4.00, and Wednesday opens right through to October draw 1.00pm fish 2.00-7.00 .

Until my next report tight lines Eddie and Simon.

Spring Festival Day 2 Results.

4th April

As the anglers returned for day two of the Easter Festival they were hopeful that the blustery conditions from Saturday had blown away, but as usual they were to be disapointed.

Day one section winners Matt Smith had drawn A section peg 8, Tim Guise had drawn B section peg 27 and Mark Malin had drawn C sections peg 15 so they were all confident of a good days fishing . For the rest of the anglers it was a case of catch up so what was needed was a good draw and a good days fishing { who does not fancy that}, so off they went for another 5 hours.

The weather so John tells me was a blustery day blowing from the car park bank towards the motorway bank and with plenty of fish crashing in the big lake hopes were high for another set of big weights that Rolfslake is famous for.

The summary of the day was that again in Section A it was very difficult except for Colin Wedgebrow and Matt Smith {who draws that well that i will ask him to choose my lottery numbers} who were having a very good battle that was eventually won by Matt by 3-01. In B section it was very difficult for the anglers fishing in the bowl by the hut pegs 9,10.27,30 and 31 as it looked like the fish had moved down to the bottom of the lake by the amount of fish topping there. The only three weights of note came from Jason Astle on peg 13 with 63-04 , Lee Giles on peg 14 with 76-04 and finally Andy Chandler with 60-12 from peg 28.

All the main action came from C section where the fish were up in the water and a great batlle commenced with Mark Malin on yesterdays winning peg 15, John Bennett on peg 17, Phil Powell on peg 23 and Mark Bowerman on peg 24. With so many fish topping in this area it was a battle royal between the up in the water specialists and John Bennett who after catching a few carp was forced to fish his least favourite method at 16 metres {also doing this with a bad back}.

After a fantastic 5 hours the winner of C section was Mark Bowerman on peg 24 who put together another fantastic double ton weight of 207-04. Hot on Marks heels was John Bennett opposite on peg 17 who was never far away and ended up with 173-12 and just a big skimmer head of his team member Phil Powell who had 170-12. For the rest of the anglers it also was a good days fishing with the lowest  weight being 84-04 so i expect tomorrow to be even better.

After two days only one angler has a perfect score and that person is Matt Smith on two points the 2008 champion , but he has a host of anglers snapping at his heels so he will have to draw well in B section and score good points.

Spring Festival Day 1 Results.

3rd April

HAPPY EASTER EVERYONE (click to enlarge)

A cold raining day saw the start to the Rolfs lake’s Easter festival, and the anglers had a chance to meet old friends and rivals they had not seen for a year. I was pleased to see all the anglers arrive down the lake {as i was on stewarding duties today } and surprised to see people who knew who i was due to the website, so new angling acquaintances were made.

With one angler dropping out leaving only 23 anglers, it was left with two sections of 8 anglers and one of 7 so the points would be reversed with the winning angler getting one point decending down to either 8 or 7 points which all the anglers agreed was a fair result. Also with the anglers spread out leaving a long walk to the scales it was decided by John for this weekend only that fish over 10lb could be put in the keepnet but only a maximum of 6 would be allowed in one net but any monster carp 17lb + would have to be weighed there and then.

As the anglers drew their pegs they preferred to have sections B {pegs 9,10,13,14,27,28,30,31} or  section C {15,17,18,19,21,23, 24 or 26} as section A { 34,35,37,40,2,4,7,and 8} usually fishes better on day 3.

The summary of the day was with an annoying breeze making presentation difficult , the anglers found a slow start to the match with section C anglers having a few fish and Matt Smith {champion 2008} was making good progress from peg 15 and right opposite on peg 27 Mark Malin was also having a few carp. Derek Hammond on peg 19 started well but struggled towards the end, and the Swindon Mafia trio of Powell, Lane and Bennett had all drawn in B section so today we would see who would be the Godfather . In the dreaded A section Tim Guise and Mark Bedford {champion 2009} were catching fish but the anglers down the bottom bank 40,and 2 were struggling for bite and also had the wind blowing in their faces so it would be cold for them today.

Phil Powell struggling on peg 10.

As the match progressed more and more anglers started to catch all around the lake as the wind died down and the anglers could see their floats properly and the anglers that were using banded pellett were catching better than the ones using soft pellet and corn and even Chris Telling was catching on the paste .

After 5 hours the top angler on the day was Matt Smith with a fantastic top weight on the lake of 212-04 {sorry Simon} and he started off fishing long 16 metres on the deck and in the end was catching a lot shorter also on the deck fishing banded pellet and two ton weights from Tim Guise and Mark Bedford from A section also fishing the banded pellet made for good viewing from where i was sitting. Normally on days two and three the fishing gets better so i will keep you updated with the progress as it happens.
