Rolfslake Open Wednesday 12th March 2014.
The fish are starting to wake up down the lake.
Today saw an increased attendance on the open match and the anglers where hoping the sun was going to come out as promised by the weathermen. At the draw both parts of the lake big and small were included so we were going to hopefully find out where the fish had been hiding.
On pegs 22 to 26 the regular pleasure anglers were camped out and catching their usual haul of carp to double figures topped by a beautiful carp of 23 lb caught by Taff’s ( very well done buddy ).
As for the rest the draw was underway and the usual suspects were on the flyers Pete Archer on peg 8 John Draper on 5 and Geoff Edwards on peg 4. As for me today I had the pleasure of fishing next to star angler Steve Waters on peg 10 and the annoyance of fishing opposite of my main competition John Bennett on flyer peg 32 who was just receiving his mail from the postman as he draws it so much.
The match started slowly for most except for Steve Waters who was stringing together a nice run of bream to 3 lb and Ade Williams on peg 9 who was having a few fish now and then.
From what I was told the small lake was fishing difficult except for Mick Jones on peg 34 who had abandoned his plan of trying to catch 30 lb of silvers as there were a few carp to target today. As for the rest in the small lake it was a case of targeting the silvers and trying to build a decent weight.
As for me i was having my own dramas on last week’s winning peg 13 as i caught a quick carp then losing the next 4 fishing to my left just past the first tree. For the next couple of hours all i could hear were the pleasure anglers catching and seeing Steve continue to catch bream with the odd carp chucked in.
In first place today was me Eddie and after my slow start my left hand edge sprung into life with bites coming on a regular basis. I was fishing on the deck in about 4 feet of water using corn and paste hook baits feeding pretty heavy to catch carp all 20 of them but it was a case of what could of been as i lost about 11 carp and visited the tree a couple of times but all in all i enjoyed my day with my final weight of 158-10.
In second place and my star performer of the day was Steve Waters on peg 10 who manager to catch a steady stream of big bream fishing at about 13 metres on the deck using maggot hook bait feeding pellet. In between his bream Steve managed to catch 4 carp and in the end was kicking himself as he missed the silver fish match record by 13-08 or about 4 bream but he vowed to return for another attempt.
Completing the frame was Ade Williams who was fishing peg 9 and Ade caught a mixed bag of carp and silvers for his weight of 55-06.

The Pirate returns to hammer John B in todays match.
Being away from the lake for a few weeks i was concerned i was going to fall another point behind John as i was out of touch with how the lake was fishing and also seeing John draw flyer peg 32 by the hut which has thrown up both big silver and carp weights recently.
As you can read from above John did not have a good day compared to me as he failed to catch compared to my bagging under the tree on peg 13.
After 5 hours i was relieved to get my first point on the board in our years battle but i know John will want revenge quickly.
The score now stands at
John 3
Eddie 1
Thanks for reading John ,Simon and Eddie
Does mr Bennett ever draw anywhere but 32????
He likes to be near the Tea urn when it’s a bit chilly!
Report to follow? lol
Excellent effort, Eddie, well worth a point but for such a bashing I think you deserve 2 points.
Cracking bag of bream by Steve Water, obviously getting in some good practice for the weekend.
I had hoped to have a crack at 30lb of Roach on the day but the general consensus seemed to be that I was wasting a good peg (that was putting it politely according to some of the advise I got!) Mind you after struggling for the first 3 hours I wish I had! but I found a few after changing my feed to corn only with Tuna glugged meat on the hook.
