Rolfslake Night Match 10th June 2011.
Rolfslake switches on big time for the night anglers in the second night match of the year.
As the anglers arrived for the second of the Rolfslake’s night match they were greeted with rain and the end of a corporate match that had been held earlier in the day which was won with a weight of 90lb from peg 18 with waggler fished shallow.
As there were only 9 anglers tonight i and John Hague were tasked with sorting the pegs and decided to give all the anglers a bit of space so we used both the big and small lake.
As the match started at 8.30pm the lake was a mass of bubbles as the carp were feeding on the fly hatch on the water down the bottom of the big lake, but the fish were not not going mad in the first hour and at 9.30 John fired up the generator and turned the lights which drew complaints from the angler on the motorway bank as the 1000 watt lights blinded them for a while. Most anglers in the second hour started catching from all areas of the lake as it started raining again and a breeze blew from the big to the small lake which helped put the fish down.
The winner today was returning angler Simon Enticott who was fishing motorway bank peg 16 and was one of the anglers affected by the blinding lights from my peg 23 which was hampering him to see his float in the second and third hour. A change of fishing position from a 10 metre line out in front to fishing just past the bush pushed Simons catch rate up and in the end he could not catch the fish fast enough. Simon was using a combination of corn and paste to catch his fish and even had a pair of 19lb commons in his board weight of 189-00 and after 5 hours put a fantastic 335-08 for a match win {well done Simon }.
In second place for a change was me Eddie and after the first hour with 7 carp in the net i was really flying and at the rate i was catching i was seriously expecting to get close to my PB of 328-00 but a poor last hour ruined that idea. I was fishing my favourite X4 paste mix 2011 and i started off feeding the two bush swims to my right and left and started on the 8 metre line straight out, and was amazed at the amount of really good bites i was getting even with the swim a mass of bubbles. After the fourth hour i had over 200lb but that last hour cost me dear as i only put 4 fish in the net but still ended up with 249-12 with fish to 17-08.
Completing the frame was John Bennett on form peg 7 and with peg 8 not in he had way too many options to fish so he started on the tip and caught a couple fish quickly but with John being one of Rolfslake’s top anglers found a spot to his left towards peg 8 at a range of 4 metres and started to bag on big carp {his board weight went 169-00} and by feeding heavy and fishing big 11mm donkey choker pellets John was able to keep the fish coming but after 5 hours fell just a silver nets worth of fish short of second {John put his silvers back} with his weight of 234-08.
Spare a thought for John as he fished tonights match in two types of pain the first was a really painful hip that made sitting and standing for any period of time really difficult, and the second was after the weigh-in when he was told he had been beaten by me as he got a real ear bashing { how sad }.

As the battle between me and John continues it will only push us both to catch bigger and bigger weights as i am sure John thought he had tonights match in the bag as when the whistle sounded he shouted to me “you have given me a right thrashing tonight Eddie” knowing he had over 200lb in the net.
When i got around to weigh Johns fish i looked at his board weight of 165lb and though you crafty old man or words to that effect, and when we weighed his net carp it went 234-08 and when i asked for his silver net he told me he had put them back. On walking round to my peg i could see a smug look on his face thinking he had beaten me but when i got round to my peg and added my board i was surprised to find out that it added to 145-00 and thought i might have a chance and after weighing my three nets was well chuffed to see my weight of 249-12 and another point gained back.
The score now stands at:
John 4
Eddie 3
Until our next report thanks for reading Simon ,Eddie and John.
Great weights well done everyone.
Would have loved to see Johns face when you weighed in Eddie.
Looks like everyone had a fine time.
Well done to Simon for a fabulous return.
Sport was a little slow on my weeks fishing holiday, just 11 Carp in 12 sessions. Mind you I did get a 5lb Trout on a floating dog biscuit!
Looking forwards to getting back to the lake to catch a proper size Carp or two.
