Rolfs Lake Spring League. Round 1. 29th Jan.
Today was the eagerly awaited pairs series based on 6 matches with you been able to drop your worst result.
I was very much looking forward to this as I have practically been in hibernation since I arrived back from Whiteacres last October. There were 9 other pairs fishing and on paper they all looked very strong teams so the competition was going to be good along with plenty of banter.
John Bennett conducted the draw for the sections we were going to fish, unbelievably the first 8 pairs all drew A section with only the last pair breaking the sequence of A section draws.
Once the draw for the sections was done, we were on for drawing our pegs for the day. The fancied pegs in A section went to Paul Bennett, Paul Jay and Mick Chappell. I was personally in B section and having fished the section the day before without a lot of success, I was secretly hoping I would of avoided, even more when I drew peg 22 as I had struggled off 18 before
Conditions wise the lake was like a mill pond, well this was until Steve Waters plumbed up the depth and caught a carp on a bare hook. Solid springs to mind. Typical Steve Waters peg then !!!!
With the match kicking off at 10.45, Mark Newbold on peg 26 was running to the weigh station at 10.46 with his first carp. Looking round the lake it looked like the fish were having a bit of a feed as most people seemed to be catching except the guys between 17 and 23 who sat looking at motionless tips or floats.
Come the final whistle the carp had moved to our end of the lake but it was all to late. Mick Chappel on peg 13 was rumoured to have caught well plus Andy on peg 10 next to him. Come the weigh in Mick Chappel was confirmed as the winner catching mainly on banded pellet or corn over micro pellet. Andy next to him on peg 10 was only one fish behind him again catching on corn over pellet.
Overall the battle for B section was won by Mark Newbold on peg 26 fishing 14m fishing double corn over pellet. This was also enough to ensure his team were top pairs on the day with 17 points.
With the next match this coming Sunday, the teams at the top will be looking to consolidate there lead and the ones at the bottom will be looking for an improved performance, However with Baltic conditions forecast, anything can happen !!!
Lastly on the behalf of all the anglers at Rolfs, I would like to wish Phil Powell a speedy recovery and we will look forward to seeing you back on the bank soon.

That was an interesting set of results, and I wonder which team will ditch their results first.
What happened to JB and his secret method as it did not work.
Roll on round 2.
No wonder Dave Wightman and Paul Jay struggled if they were sat on the same peg!……lol
I hope we ditch our score of 12 asap
if it ends up counting, then we wont be winning any Rolfs loot!
dunno what you’ve all been playing at on peg 10, maybe it just needed a proper angler to draw it 😉 lol
Early days yet pellet king, anything can happen over the next 5 matches, especially if the cold sets in
I still think if we count that 12, we wont win, although who knows.
a couple of lucky weeks where a team scores 18-20 points will smash it wide open
just hope its us!
So true Pat, if we start getting ice that’ll really mix things up. All in all though I thought it was a decent match, couple of shockers but hey ho it is January. Talking of dropped results, we’re dropping ours for sure ! which reminds me Andy, what was that you were saying about my partners drawing ability !!!! 38 shocker
I thought I drew well as well Steve
Peg 22, the less said the better. 2 carp in the last fifteen minutes says it all
I agree 38 is crap, but lets make a note of the 6 draws we all get…. 😉 38, 25,34, 25, 34, 25 will probably make his other draws up lol
before the draw, I think you agreed with me that 10 is a mega shocker, when I turned over the disc I honestly could have cried lol However I didnt realise than 31 isnt being used now and its amazing, it does give you a much better bomb / wag chuck. 10 wont be as bad as we thought
to say its january there were 68 carp caught and probably 50 lost which for a place like Rolfs where they average 10lb is pretty damn good really.
As long as its a relative fishing match and not a lottery where 6oz starts being a good weight, it should be a good league
Mr Newbold and his parnter is crime were yesterdays draw bags. Fancy drawing 34 and 25 and MOANING! lol
however he was too scared to go in the individual so he missed out on 10 points 😉
Thanks Pat, good reading 😀
I didnt moan about the draw mate, moaned that it was bloody freezing that was about it!
It’s going to be frozen sunday for certain not looking forward to it.
Watching Steve catch a carp on a bare hook was amasing!
