HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO GARY

A happy birthday to Gary for sun 15th August. He hired the lake for his birthday bash and invited a few friends to enjoy a barbecue and a fishing match. He also caught the biggest fish of the day a 17lb 4oz beauty, I do have a picture which I will hopefully download later, but I do have a photo of a friends other half with a big fish, if I remember right it was 17lb 4ozs

Wednesday Open. 10th Aug 2010

13 anglers turned up today to fish the open match along with 9 Pleasure anglers which included some lads all the way from Lancashire 😯

The weather today at the lake started of bright and sunny but soon went overcast with no wind on the lake.

It seems the fish are on the move round the little lake again with pegs 4,6,7 and 8 all doing well today. Derek Hammond on peg 6 was fishing short on the corn to put together and amazing 273lb which was also good enough to take the Peg King title off Mick Jones.

Also in the frame was Pat Pritchard fishing from peg 4, he managed to put 230lb on the scales and put his last match behind him 😀 Completing the frame was Kevin Arathoom fishing from peg 8 who put 166lb on the scales.

For the rest of the anglers fishing the match the fishing was very patchy and bites were hard to come by.

The pleasure anglers were having a good time and John hopes you made it home ok and enjoyed your time at the lake.

On to the results….

Maggotdrowning.com Pairs Weekend. 7th, 8th Aug 2010

Red Leader, Match organiser and Maggotdrowing.com owner. Dave Webster

The weekend had arrived for the annual maggotdrowing.com pairs match. Forum members from the site do battle for bragging rights and a nice trophy for the cabinet. Trophies for this years match were organised by Peter Morton as Dave was having problems getting hold of them.

The Trophies for the lucky winners

Some of the anglers were already at the lake having fished the match yesterday but it wasn’t long before everyone arrived for the draw. Fishing today was from 2pm-7pm

People arriving for the Draw

Saturday

While people were setting up Crystal and Liam  Doyle went round and collected people’s guesses on ‘Guess the Weight’ competition.

Liam and Crystal

The fishing today was quite patchy with people catching fish but certain pegs were doing better than others. Malc Doyle in the big lake on peg 25 was catching plenty of fish and making regular trips to the weight station fishing short. I was having regular fish fishing the feeder and short pole lines from peg 17. Steve Wilson on peg 29 was putting a few fish together also. Steve Akal fishing peg 20 was doing a fine job of taking the peg king title.

Down in the little lake only 2 pegs were heading towards a ton weight today. Tony Roberts on peg 3 was blasting past Eddies peg king weight and heading towards a double ton and Jon Hatch on peg 39 was nearing the ton but it was to be some silver fish that made it possible 😀

Nearly a Double but still a new Peg King. Tony Roberts

Jon Hatch on peg 39, praise to the silvers

Clive Pritchard looks to be camped on peg 32 😀

Two club angler appeared at the lake in preparation of their match to have a look round. They arrived just as Steve Wilson was weighing in a 21lb carp. They went over to have a look and were astounded with the size of the fish. They went back over to John and said..

“That bloke just had a 21lb’er and never even smiled or blinked” 😯 😮

“Do many poles get broke here then with fish that big ?”

“Not really” John replied.

Just then a thunderous “CRACK, BANG” went out round the lake. Mitch Auger fishing on peg 34 had broke a top kit. This was followed by Clive on peg 32 breaking a section trying to get a fish from behind the bush and to top it off Malc also broke a topkit too.

The blokes then went to the tackle table and promptly brought some stronger elastic 😀

A special mention now to Dave Webster who’s new method that had taken the the lake apart yesterday found out that it only works on peg 24 😀 He was on peg 11 today and the ‘Feederless Feeder’ had failed to produce for him. Fine tuning needed some might say 😀 😆

Dave Webster. Pioneer of the 'feederless feeder' 😀

With the match over it was clear that Malc had won with a cracking performance from peg 25. Tony was admitting to a large ton but secretly hoping for the double. On to the weigh in and the results for Saturday.

With most people staying at the lake everyone settled in for the night with a BBQ and beer.

Sunday

Today the draw was going to be a lot earlier to allow people that have travelled a long way to get home. Fishing today was from 11am-4pm, not normally a very productive time to fish at the lake.

After the first hour of the match it was clear that the fishing today was going to very hard indeed. The sun was blazing and the carp were cruising around the top layers of the lake not much interested in getting their heads down and feeding.

The only person heading towards a ton weight today was Chris on peg 7 fishing the feeder to the back of the lilies. Tony fishing peg 26 today was also catching quite well. Another 20lb plus carp from peg 25 today too, this time caught by Keith fishing the same lines that Malc had fished the day before.

4pm came round very quickly and people were saying their swims had just started to produce some fish. Chris had indeed caught a ton weight and was the only one today to do so.

Pre Pairs Weekend Invitational Match.6th Aug 2010

Maggotville getting warmed up *All pictures Click-able for larger view*

Dave Collier had booked the lake for a pre Maggotdrowing pairs weekend match. He invited some friends and Jinx members. This was to be a warm up match in preparation for the annual 2 day Maggotdrowning.com pairs weekend. This also allowed those attending to get their tents pitched and settled in.

The draw was at 12.30 and fishing was going to be 2.15 -7.15pm. Me, Gem and Budgie arrived late thanks to the traffic on the M40 so Pauline drew our pegs for us and what a drawing hand she has. Gem was on peg 9, I was on peg 26 and Budgie was on not so much of a good peg, Peg 40. As we arrived people were already setting up. We unloaded the car and got everything in to the tent and headed off to set up with only about 30 minutes to go before the all in was honked by Dave on his Gillette horn 😀

Geoff Palmer on peg 10 was the first person to catch a fish just a couple of minutes after the all-in. People were catching over the big lake and Dave Webster on peg 24 was on the feederless Feeder (as he call’s it) which is basically a pellet cone. He was having plenty of action and was taking an early lead in the big lake.

Clive had drawn peg 32 again after having it on the last Jinx match. He was not impressed to say the least as it was not fishing to its normal standards and he was breaking his pole in the process of getting out the carp from behind the bush.

I had been fishing the feeder for the first 15 minutes while my other lines were fed. I had not set up the pole as I had not had time. John Bennett came round and said he thought the fish would feed shallow, with that said I set up a shallow rig and had a go. It resulted in one fish a 16lb’er 🙂

At this point Dave was storming ahead in the big lake followed by Steve up the corner on peg 22. Ant Haywood over on peg 18 was also catching a few. In the little lake Malc on peg 38 was catching some big un’s and was the only person really catching. Gem was on peg 9 again and having a steady run of fish but struggling to keep the fish out of the left and right bushes.

I was fed up of watching Dave’s rod tip going round so I fed my 5 meter line and went for a walk with the camera.

Feederless Feeder fish 😀

Getting back to my peg I set up the rig for the 5 meter line and went in with a banded pellet, fish on right away and that was the story for the rest of the match for me. A nice steady run of fish. Like everyone else I was also suffering from loosing foul hooked fish 🙁

On the all out Hooter I thought Dave had managed the win but thought I would be close behind him. Word was the little lake had fished poorly and Malc had won that section.  On to the weigh in.

Going round the lake as usual from peg 34 it was clear to see that the little lake had indeed fished hard with Malc catching the most weight with the help of some big fish which have been showing around the lake again. Everyone was eager to see what Gem had done on peg 9 as a lot of people had struggled.

Gem put 52lb on the scales, from that point on people where just hoping not to get Minxed. Ant Heywood on peg 18 put the first ton weight on the board with 109 followed by another from peg 22 fished by Steve Akal. Next was Dave ‘Feederless Feeder’ Webster on peg 24, he weighed in 136lb and was looking good for the win until we weighed in my fish, Just one fish separated us. I put 144lb on the scales to take the win for the day. I was surprised as I thought I had about 120lb but have never been good at guestimates 😀 It was a good battle Dave thank you.
