McMillans Cancer Charity Fund Raiser 20th July.

McMillan Cancer charity fund raising day.

The Pro’s and the McMillan charity team.

Today Rolfslake hosted a charity fund raising day in aid of the McMillan cancer support charity. In the proceeding days John, Dai and Paul Jay had been working flat out preparing the lake and sorting out the car parking that neighbour farm John had kindly agreed to let John use the next field for the visitors.

The match was going to be two 2 and a half hour matches with a 5 minute pre baiting period just before the second part of the match, and as if by special request the anglers down the lake were greeting with a warm day with very little wind which does not go hand in hand with big catches. John very kindly passed on his lake fee to the charity with the rest to be raised from the daily fees from the anglers plus sales of burgers and finished with a raffle with prizes very kindly donated by Kamasan and Daiwa and Drennan so hopefully this would help bolster the fund raising.

The match today was going to be 12 Pro /lake regular anglers to be paired with non regulars with the match being decided on section points and weight and at 12.30 the all in was called and never has the lake been devoid of banter as the anglers settled down to really concentrate on their fishing. Today it was a pleasure to have some of the Pro anglers that had given up their time to fish and give the anglers a chance of beating a real star { that was the plan at least}.

John tells me that the story of the match was it was a slow start with the anglers hooking and losing some big carp and even some smaller carp that just refused to be landed but as he match progressed they sorted this out and started to put fish in the net. One of the top performances was Ian McCulloch on little used prg 36 in the small lake who was not only putting the third biggest weight together but also claiming the peg king for 36 { well done Ian }. The main individual battle was between Super star angler Steve Ringer and Rolfslake resident and form angler Dai Thomas who were both pegged on the car park bank Steve on 32 and Dai on 22 and after the 5 hours Dai ended up in first place with 145-01 one carp ahead of Steve who caught 130-12 but at  least it was fun to see Steve battling the big powerful carp of Rolfslake { Dai revel in glory as a victory against Steve is a rare thing and he tells John HE WILL BE BACK }.

Top overall Rolfslake’s resident Dai Thomas { well done Dai }.

Steve Ringer hanging on.

On the team front Steve Ringer did get his revenge as he was paired with Karl on peg 9 straight opposite and between them they caught 172-12 for 7 points and victory { well done guys }.

Saturday Open Match. 21st July 2012

.
.

Today was a duel match, you could either fish for carp or Silver as there was a separate pool for both. John had offered anyone a bottle of champers if they broke the 100lb of silvers. With most people armed with worm and caster I think it’s fair to say most were going for the silvers today.

Early morning wake up call

The weather for once was nice and sunny with very little wind and NO rain 😀 Not the most perfect conditions for silver fishing most were saying. Fishing today was from 11.45 to 4.45.

Lake looking good again after all the rain, thanks to everyone’s efforts down the lake.

Olly having a nap

Simon and Michael pretty much had the lake lake to themselves along with 2 pleasure anglers who had turned up after leaving another fishery. Michael on peg 8 was using a whip to catch silvers, Simon on peg 6 was off to a great start with a big fish on straight away which spat the hook at the net, luckily it was followed by another which went 18lb 8oz, great start.

After the first hour I had 6 carp and was off to weigh another and Michael told me that I was the only person to catch a carp, I didn’t believe him but it was true and the big lake was struggling for both carp and silvers.

With 3 hours gone Michael could not resist after hearing the splashing from my peg 😀 and started going for the carp and started putting a few on the board and in the nets.

At the all out I had 11 on the board (fish over 10lb are weighed and released) to 18lb 8oz and 14 in my nets (9 in one and 5 in another) along with 6 bream and some roach. Michael was claiming 30lb of silvers so I thought he had a least beaten my silver weight. Geoff had said Kev Dolton on peg 25 had a good bag of silvers so it was on to the weigh in.

Tumbley Bay A.C Club match 15th July 2012

Rolfslake welcomes another member of the 300lb club.

Today Rolfslake welcomed Tumbley Bay angling club down to the lake and as they were short of a few people they invited a few of the regulars and some of the Jinx league anglers who were still there from Saturday.

Today was a mild day with very little wind and the anglers today were greeted by the usual sight of plenty of cruising fish and feeding fish by the look of the bubbles coming from the bottom which normally gets the club anglers excited with thoughts of big weights, and today Rolfslake did not disappoint.

Lovely bubbly

It was decided by match organiser Paul Bennett that today the lake was going to be split into two sections ,section A being from pegs 34 to 8 and section B was from 9 to 32 so there were the top two in both sections to play for. The good news for me was that John and myself had drawn as far away from each other as possible as he had drawn peg 22 and me 34 so it was going to be a quiet match for a change and at 10.30 the all in was called.

The story of the match was after a slowish start the fish started to feed both in the big and small lake and there were some big carp caught today topped by Michael Corsini who caught a big 21lb common caught on the tip from peg 7 but there were lots of big doubles caught from most anglers all around.

The big story of the day was from peg 16 on the motorway bank where Rolfslake.com co-owner Simon Mound was going after Geoff Edwards king of the lake title but after a poor first 2 hours just fell short. Simon today was fishing the right hand margin after dabbling with fishing the bush to his left and a straight out line with very little success but when he turned his attention to the right hand margin for the last 3 hours and could not believe it as he had a big shoal of carp waiting for him. Simon fished half way down the purple bush fishing on the deck with his tried and tested 8mm hard banded pellet and caught about 35 carp to 17lb { Simon’s board weight went 168lb }.

By keeping he bait moving Simon kept the bites coming and even with the repeated stick he was getting from Randolph and Mortimer aka John Bennett and Geoff Edwards he continued to catch and after a busy 5 hours put a fantastic and rare 315lb on the scales for not only his first 300lb but also a personal best weight { very well done Simon }.

Second in Simon’s B section was Laurence Bloomfield who was fishing form peg 9 and by fishing the bush to his right fishing pellet on the deck Laurence caught fish to double figures for a great weight of 155lb which on any other day could of won this match.

A section was won by Michael Corsini who was fishing peg 7 . Michael started on the tip catching his 21lb common early but also added a few more and then switched between a 6 metre line straight out in front and a margin swim towards peg 8 which added more carp to his final weight of 135-08 by fishing pellet fished on the deck feeding pellet to continue his good form { well done Michael }. Only a small fish behind was Paul Bennett who was on back bank peg 2 and by fishing down the edge fishing paste managed to keep the carp coming to only end up just short of a section win with his weight of 134-00.

The regulars would like to thank Tumbley Bay for their invitation to fish in what turned out to be a memorable and enjoyable day.

Its not Freddie Kruger or Edward Sissorhands.
Its Simon Mound raking up the pound side bets from Bennett and Edwards.

Simon fished down the edge dead center of this bush.
