Rolfslake Pairs Match Round 1 8th January 2017

The Teams of 2 returns to Rolfslake

Today saw the start of the 6 match teams of 2 league matches at Rolfslake on a very cold day. This competition has one angler fish for carp with the other angler fishing for silvers and points are awarded 1 point for first down to 9 points for last in section, with the team on the lowest points total after 6 rounds being the winner.

Today was a very tough day for the anglers with the very cold melted ice water affecting both sections as the fish turned off feeding.

The winners of both carp and the silvers came from 4 pegs apart with Andrew Camden winning the carp section from peg 34 fishing along the rope with his weight of 85-09, and Anthony Flint winning the silvers section from peg 38 with a very good bag of skimmers and roach with 16-10.

Top team on the day was Anthony and Andy with 3 points but there will be many more twist and turns over the next 5 rounds.

Rolfslake Pairs Series Round 6 28th February 2016

20120908_170548

Round 6 the final countdown.

Today saw the final round of the spring series where anyone of 3 teams were in with a chance of Champions glory.

Today saw the anglers greeted with a cold blustery day with the wind coming from the East which made long distance pole fishing quite difficult and with the colder weather it also slowed the carp from feeding in any numbers.

The story of the day was both Andy and Anthony and Dan and Gavin needed the long time leaders Steve and Derek to draw bad and not catch which rarely happens. Both the chasing teams drew quite well with Andy drawing peg 38 the scene of his shocking result from round 2 but today won the silver section with a great silver weight of 24-13. Andy’s partner Anthony had a real struggle catching a solitary carp 1 minute from the end which weighed 7-13 and with that their chance of glory disappeared .

That left only one team to try and catch the leaders ( Dan and Gavin )and quite oddly drew next to each on pegs 13 and 14 and although both caught fish they ended near midway in their respective sections for a total of 8 points.

That left Steve and Derek having to have a nightmare to lose the series but as it has been for the previous 5 rounds they drew fair pegs and made the most of them with Steve winning the carp section from peg 7 with 46-14 and Derek coming 4th in his section.

With their total of 5 points today they could not be caught and won a very competitive series to be crowned Rolfslake Spring Pairs Champions 2016 ( well done guys ).

Rolfslake Pairs Series Round 5 14th February

20120908_170548

Another cold day down the lake.

Today saw the anglers return for round 5 and with three teams in with a real chance of winning the series it was imperative to have a good draw for both anglers.

The story of today saw the anglers in the carp section struggle for bites with the easterly cold wind and high water level putting the fish off feeding but Gavin Millis managed to secure a few for his weight of 23-10 and one point.

In the silvers section Steve Waters drew unpredictable peg 38 in the small lake and with the conditions favourable to fish the long pole Steve started by fishing just off the bottom rising to the top to catch roach on caster for a very good 26-08 and again beating the top carp weight.

As far as the teams on the day Dan and Gavin were top with 5 points to go joint 2nd in the league with both Andy and Anthony and Steve and Derek both scoring 6 points to keep the gap still at 6 points.

With only one round to go it would take a massive effort from the two chasing teams and a poor draw for Steve and Derek to really close the points gap but as we have seen already anything can happen.

Roll on round 6 in two weeks time.

Rolfslake Pairs Series round 3

Round three Battle of the silvers.

Today saw the anglers return for round three of the pairs series down at Rolfslake where one angler fishes for carp and the other for silvers.

John tells me that today there was a slight southerly breeze but it was mild with lots of cruising carp in the small lake.

In today’s match the carp fishing was really hard with only 9 fish caught and the winner of the carp section was Andy Quarmby on peg 18 on the motorway bank with his weight of 29-14.

The real battle today was a silver fish shootout between the top five anglers in this section and the difference between fishing maggots and casters.

The top silver fish angler today and overall winner was Drennan sponsored Steve Waters on car park bank peg 30.

I cannot remember the last time a silver fish net won over a carp net but Steve managed this feat with a fantastic net of stamp roach today. Steve fished shallow fishing caster to keep the big roach coming and at the end of 5 hours weighed a brilliant 36-12 ( well done Steve).

In a very close battle for second was between Dan Blackwell and Anthony Flint on pegs 9 and 13 in the middle bowl.

I am not sure if Dan fished maggots but Anthony did to catch a smaller stamp of roach but both were kept very busy and in the end Anthony just beat Dan with his weight of 26-15 to Dan’s 26-06.

The silver fishing was brilliant today with 5 weights over 18lb in what was a highlight in the series to date.

The team winners on the day were Andy and Anthony who made an epic comeback from their horror 15 point score in the last round.

Steve and Derek are controlling the league at the moment closely followed by Dan and Gavin.

John will be holding a silvers only match on sunday 31st jan, draw 9-00 fish 10-00 to 3-00, call him on 07774618688 to book in and sample some of this superb silver fish action. Read more

Rolfslake Pairs Series Round 2

20120908_170548

Pairs Series round 2

Today saw the return of the 16 anglers fishing round two of the pairs series on a cold day down the lake.

John and Dai had worked tirelessly down the lake pumping out water and melting the ice which was at least an inch on Friday. By using the valuable areators to melt the ice it saved the anglers having to get out the ice breakers.

Considering the weather and results from other lakes the match fished quite well and tight in both carp and silvers section. The leaders from round 1 Andy and Anthony had one of the horror days fishing as both struggled to get many bites from pegs 38 and 14 and came back with a near maximum 15 point score.

The big winners on the day from two good pegs 22 and 13 were Steve and Derek who patiently made their good draws count. Derek fished the ever reliable silver peg 13 and caught a good quality bag of big perch and roach to win his section with 22-08 . Steve however was waiting right till the end to catch two units from his long 14.5 metre edge line which weighed nearly all of his 29-01 to record 4 team points.

The top weight of the day went to Steve Stayte who was fishing moody peg 34 but managed 6 carp and also lost a few for his weight of 46-07 which would of won most of the local matches in the area.

After round two the teams have now got closer together and the top 5 teams are now separated by 8 points and as today’s match has shown any team can have a nightmare day if you can’t get the bites.

Roll on round 3 this weekend.
