A dull day at Rolfs Lake

Today saw 16 angler at the lake to fish round 2 of the spring league. The weather this morning was very dull, raining and a slight wind blowing down the big lake towards pegs 19, 20 and 21. The temps were a lot warmer too so would the carp want to play today was the question everyone was asking.

All the matches are been held in the big lake only for the spring league so everyone was saying the carp would be in the little lake 🙂

The fields around the lake were flooded and John Bennett had had the pumps running since Thursday to keep the levels on the lake down. The water was just lapping some of the platforms so he had done a great job.

The brook was Really High

Lots of mud everywhere due to all the rain.

At the start of the match Simon on peg 22 was straight in to carp fishing 16m to the bush next to peg 21. He was fishing corn on the deck. He managed to catch 7 carp in the first hour. Derek on peg 9 was catching some excellent bream. Gary on peg 10 and John on peg 30 were both bagging up on Silvers catching one a chuck. Silvers were been caught all around the lake.

Simon in the second hour had switched from corn on the deck and started fishing half depth with a White boilie as bait and was getting a very good response, he had been getting a lot of Liners and had decided to give mid water. The fish were taking the bait just as the float cocked on the 3ft mark. After hour 2 he had 17 carp in the net (not all one net)

The rest of the lake were struggling with only a few carp been caught but plenty of silver fish action, where were they all in the winter league ?? They certainly were making a come back now.

By the end of the third hour the silvers were still showing round the lake and the carp were still biting on peg 22. Simon by this time had 25 carp in the net. The final hour saw him only catch a further 2 carp to give him a total of 27. He tempted the last 2 by going back on the deck with the corn again.

No Picture of Simon’s fish as it was raining again sorry. But with the first big weight from the lake this year it looks like things maybe on the up for the lake. We shall see what happens in round 3 next week on the 7th March.

Rolfslake open match Sunday 21st February 2010

Today saw another Sunday open on an improving Rolfslake, and with a low attendance the anglers were grouped together in the big lake between pegs 14 and 28.

On John Bennetts arrival at the lake before the match he was greeted with the lake frozen again as the temperature the night before in Oxford had dropped to -4 degrees but a good blast with the areators saw the ice melt very quickly and as the draw took place the ice had all but gone.

The ice melter.

The report from John about the match saw anglers hooking and losing carp on both the bomb and the pole, which is good news considering a few weeks back there were no signs of carp moving at all so with warmer weather the carp will switch back on properly. The winner today was lake owner John who was fishing peg 14 on the motorway bank and after a quick two carp on the bomb then switched on to the pole and that was when his frustration began. John was fishing long towards peg 15 and by fishing with his rig just touching bottom using corn as hook bait started to foul hook carp as his rig was dropping through the water, and during the match John managed to lose 8 carp and catch 3 more for his final weight of 51-02 {well done John}. John also told me that he had to feed micro pellet and feed and then drop his rig in on top to get bites and even then the bites were the tinyest of dips so it was pretty hard to spot and even harder to hook the carp properly.

The back up weights also included carp but the carp at the moment are still grouped in the middle of the lake so the waggler and the bomb are good options at the moment.

Spring league 2010. Round 1.

14th February 2010

Rolfslake throught the round window

Today saw the delayed start to the spring league teams of three round one , and missing from this series were Rolfs Team Gold but who were replaced in the series by a new team called the Swindon Bandits.

The reason the league was delayed was to give the lake a proper chance to recover from the extreme cold weather that had been with us since before Christmas. With only 4 teams entered it was decided to fish only the big lake as so keep the anglers together and if they did not catch at least they would have someone to talk to. The weather was sunny with a cold northerly wind which was not going to help the anglers catch a carp but the silvers should respond so at least there should be a few bites for everyone.

At the end of five hours John Bennett told me that most of the fish were down the bottom of the lake ,towards peg 19 and 20 so Derek Hammond who was on peg 22 was always in with a chance of having a few and after losing a few Derek had 5 carp for a winning 45-07  {well done Derek}. The top silver weight on the day was a fantastic 21-04 from the Swindon Mafia’s Phil Powell who was kept busy with plenty of  bite.

The next round is on Sunday the 28th so the anglers are hopeful the carp will continue to bite but if not there are lots of silver fish to be caught.

Winter league round 6

The ice skating rink

With Rolfs lake looking like a scene from the film the day after tomorrow and with the anglers not looking very hopeful of a good days fishing it was going to be a fitting end to the winter league series. After losing the lead of the league in round 5 Rolfs Team Gold were going to have to fish brilliantly today to win their eighth league title in a row. What they did not want to see was Rolfs Team Diamond’s captain Jon Walker back at the lake to help his team of Ian McCulloch and Mike Stimpson maintain their lead at the top of the league.

After the anglers had broken the ice for the 5th match in a row, it was off on another 5 tough hours of trying to catch either a fish to gain a point or stick it out to get a carp for mega points. With the weather very cold most of the anglers were fishing the pole only because the ice holes they had cut did not go past 10 metres so the bomb rod was a non starter. As i arrived Ian McCulloch on peg 18 was playing his first carp and after a five minute fight he had it looking at him from the bottom of his keepnet so good points were coming his way. In his section {which was B ] John Bennett who was really struggling to get a bite ,so Ian was at that point 6 points up. In C section the big battle was between Phil Powell and Jon Walker who were both catching silvers regular but with Phil using maggots and bloodworm he was catching slighter bigger fish than Jon.

In the dreaded A section all the anglers were struggling for any action so if Mike Stimpson could just catch one fish he was going to get good points, but when i went to talk to him he had tried all methods without any sort of indication so thing were not looking too good for him, but when i informed him that Mick Lane was also fish-less he had a wry smile knowing as they stood his team would be victorious. Around the lake the other anglers were having the odd fish and even some were taking nap knowing that they would not be far behind, but the general theme was feed and hope your float would go under.

Time for a nap

As the match approached the last hour a few more of the anglers started to catch but after getting loads of stick from his team mate Phil Powell , Mick Lane eventually caught a fish much to his relief and that of his team, so it was two to weigh-in from both teams so it was going to come down to which team could get their third man to weigh. On my last walk round the lake i could see Paul Jay seeking a few perch on peg 14, Steve Palmer getting a few small chub from peg 34 and my co-blogger Simon Mound having a few fish by fishing towards peg 3 in the small lake. When I finally got round to John Bennett he was still without a fish but i must of brought him some luck because as I looked at his float it disappeared and a small perch of an ounce was in the landing net {well done John}.

As the all out was called you could sense a relief that the hardest league series ever was at last over, but the anticipation was all about who had won the league series and with Rolfs Team Gold having three anglers weighing in and Rolfs Team Diamond only having two anglers weighing in as Mike had blanked but they had a 3 point lead it was going to be very close. After all the anglers had weighed in and the points were added up the Rolfs lake teams of three winter series winners were Rolfs team gold who made up the three points and won by a single point { well done Mick, John and Phil but also well done to Mick, Ian and Jon for running them close}.

Phil with a nice bag of silvers.

The individual title ended in a draw between Phil Powell and Ian McCulloch on points but was won by Ian on weight so done to the both of you.

Ian and Phil the top two individuals

Results to follow.
