Rolfslake’s 2nd night match 9th July 2010

Brilliant John Hague takes Lake King in night match.

As Rolfslake entertained its 2nd night match of the year, it was great to see a good attendance and also some wives and children coming to watch their dad or husband hopefully catch some fish. The weather today was a warm evening with very little wind and with the big lake in play today { hopefully for the next match the small lake will be in } the anglers were pegged between pegs 32 and 9 which left John Bennett on peg 9 and John Hague on 32 both on end pegs.

As the match started  it was an omnius sign when both the two Johns were up quite quickly weighing fish so a big weight could be on the cards for the both of them. Around the lake anglers were finding catching fish quite a challenge even with anglers facing lots of bubbles in their swim but no feeding fish so a frustrating time was had for the anglers at the bottom of the big lake and also on the car park bank as with no breeze the fish would not settle down and have a go. However at the top end of the big lake in the bowl all the anglers were having fish with Dave Whiteman and John Bennett having a good fish for fish battle on pegs 9 and 10.

The big winner today was Brandon Hague for after drawing peg 32 for his dad negotiated a deal that would give him a cut of his dads winnings if he won with some added bonuses .

John however after being drawn on form peg 32 which also won the last night match, John fished a masterclass of banded pellet fishing which brought him a great run of big fish. You always know when a big weights on the cards when an angler is running to the weigh station in the first hour, but John had to run to the weigh station a total of 21 times as his weighed fish totalled a massive 301-00. John started in front of the bush to his left and caught fish to just under 17lb in a very strong first half of the match but it was in the second half that slowed John down as he moved to a 5 metre line which still brought him fish but stopped him from catching in his words between 500 and 600lb ,but after 5 hours John caught a fantastic 397-08 and also topped the king of the lake with his new personal best from one of the nice guys down on the lake { very well done John }.

Father and son John and his fishing manager Brandon.

In second place was John Bennett who has amazingly drew peg 9 again and you know when John is catching for he always is talking and calling for me, but it must of been his new pirate outfit that brought him good luck as John for a change managed to convert a good peg into a framing peg. John fished down the edge to his left and also short out in front and used this in conjunction with paste which brought John fish to double figures in his final weight of 233-04 and just one fish in front of third place. Completing the frame was Hydro 2000 sponsored Dave Whiteman who was fishing next to John on peg 10 and by using a combination of pellet and paste caught from down the edge to his left and also just out in front for his weight of 221-12.

After the match John and Pauline treated us all to a lovely barbecue which i think finished at 3am but i am not keen on the San Miguel beer that i had which had a taste of chilli sauce { thanks Jon W } so thank you from all the anglers.

Rolfslake Wednesday Open 7th July 2010

Today as i arrived at the lake to watch as i was working late i got to see just the last hour and a half of the match but could see anglers catching all around the lake.

The winner today was Vespe sponsored angler Chris Telling who had drawn form peg 32 by the hut on the car park bank, and as i sat behind him to watch he had told me he had caught 14 fish. Chris today caught fishing two lines one behind the bush to his left and the other at a range of 6 metres in line with peg 9, and fished both with his trademark paste hook bait to catch fish to double figures in his final weight of 248-08.

In second place was Nick Merry on peg 8 who started fishing across at 16 metres against the grasses and caught small carp but a switch to the bush to his left fishing with a combination of pellet and paste brought a flurry of carp visiting Nick’s keepnet and as the match reached the last hour he was catching a fish a cast but in the end fell a few fish short of victory with 211-12

In third place was lake owner John Bennett who was lucky to draw peg 9 again as his tackle was already ready for him as he had drawn it quite alot recently so it was not going to take a long time to set up. John fished as ususal down the edge to his right but also fished a 5 metre line straight out in front and by using paste also caught big fish in his weight of 174-12.

Black Bull Angling Club Weekend match.

Today Rolfslake welcomed back Black Bull Angling Club from the Sheffield area to fish their two day match which they normally fish annually. After the recent good weights the anglers were hoping that today the fish were going to have a go but with a very warm day and very little breeze most of the anglers found it quite difficult.

The winner of today’s match was Ray fishing Wednesdays open winning peg 4, and Ray had to work hard to keep the fish coming and after five hours put 124-12 0n the scales for a deserved win {well done Ray }. Hot on Rays heels was Wally on peg 9 who had 108-04 and third was Jack Trew who was fishing peg 32 by the hut who caught the only other ton weight with 100-08.

9th Nodd 22 46-08
10th Graham 38 46-00

As the anglers got ready to draw today the weather was again warm but with a breeze coming from the south and it also helped that it was also overcast which normally helps the fishing.

John tells me that the anglers had a much better day with fish being caught all around the lake and the winner today was  Wally who had a great day fishing peg 30 on the car park bank ,and he enjoyed not only fish to double figures but a very well earned winning weight of 206-08 { well done Wally }. In a very close match on the next peg was Judd who was matching Wally fish for fish but just fell short with his weight of 200-08. Completing the frame was Jack Trew who was also in the fish catching area on peg 8 and he also enjoyed a busy match catching across to the far bank but he fell two fish short of his double ton attempt with 181-12.

Rolfslake Wednesday Open 30th June 2010

Another Wednesday another midweek open for the usual suspects hoping to catch a big bag of hungry carp that Rolfslake is famous for.

On arriving at the lake today, the carpark was busy with the lake being shared by three groups the pleasure anglers that were fishing the small lake car park bank, the local angling club that were fishing pegs 19 to 32, and the match anglers that were fishing pegs 4 to 18 on the motorway bank. The day was warm with a cool breeze blowing from the north and fish could be seen cruising all around the lake which hopefully meant lots of fish but sometimes means a struggle for five hours.

With the draw having taken place the club and match anglers set off to their pegs except me as John Bennett who has been on a bad run fishing against me had got into my car and stole my paste and hid it in the woods {very funny John } on finding my paste bucket i put it outside the shed and after collecting my tackle from the car found the paste mix gone again {not so funny John}. After playing John’s game i went off to my most favourite peg on the lake peg 6 , and settled for a hopefully good days fishing as peg 6 has always been good to me.

The problem i had today was that with two matches on today and both starting at different times i lost all concept of time as the local club started 45 minutes before us and their hooter nearly got me starting and pacing up early.

As our match started within 2 minutes John Bennet was already off his box going to the weigh station with a double figure carp so we all were playing catch-up, and with Geoff Edwards on peg 8 i was looking at a battering from the pair of them, so concentration was the order of the day. The pleasure anglers opposite were happily catching lots of carp on the bomb fishing either corn ,pellet or meat fishing half way across so at least there were feeding fish around.

Todays winner Mick Jones with a new P.B 229-12

The winner today was Rolfslake regular Mick Jones who was fishing aquarium peg 4, and Mick had a very enjoyable match fishing his specially prepared meat hook bait and fishing at 6 metres range as he always does. You know when someone is really bagging as they start running to the weigh station after only two hours { this normally only happens in the last hour } so a big weight was on the cards. Mick fished two lines one to his right at three metres and one straight out at 6 metres and this was the line that he caught most of his fish at, and if it was not for a poor last hour Mick would of gone past the 300 barrier but had to settle for 229-12 and a new pesonal best {well done Mick}. In second place was me Eddie who for three hours was getting battered by both Mick and Geoff on peg 8 but a switch to the 2.5 metre line to my left fishing just down the slope brought me a very good run of fish.

Mick Lane popped down to see us today and pretty well stayed behind me for two hours as i caught a fish a cast on my now notorious X4 paste which was working great today. I had to stiffen up the paste as there were so many fish in the swim the swirling of their tails kept pulling the paste off the hook, so i mixed in some dry mix and i worked even better. I fed quite heavy to keep the fish there and after 5 hours caught 182-12 but should of been more as when the local club matches hooter sounded to end the match i thought that was our hooter so started to pack away but Mick said we still had 45 minutes, so interupted my flow. The peg was so solid Mick after the match had a go on my gear and in 5 minutes caught one and lost two carp on the paste.

Completing the frame was Geoff Edwards on peg 8 and after giving Geoff some advice on where to fish in the peg he ended up either playing tug of war with the fish in the bush to his left of catching smaller carp long across against the far bank grasses, but when he fished the first shelf down towards peg 7 his fishing improved so much he nearly caught me. Geoff caught on pellet and paste and had fish to double figures in his final weight of 172-08.

Rolfslake’s night match 25th June 2010.

Rolfslake just as the sun was going down.

Match reporter Eddie T-Green.

With lake owner John Bennett starting the first of the 2010 evening/ night  matches the anglers were hoping for a continuation of big weights that followed fron last years matches. The set up for these matches were very simple you drew your peg at 6.30pm and fish 7.30 to half past midnight, with the floodlights being switched on when it got too dark to see your float.

As the anglers gathered at the draw it was actually nice to be able to fish this match  as i was able to finish work on time for a change. With only the big lake in for this first match the anglers were not too fussed where they wanted to draw as long as they were near a floodlight, but that was not a problem as John and Pauline to great expense had got lots of lights to go round the lake.

With the anglers having drawn their pegs there was only one left for me and as i took it out and turned it over peg 23 was my challenge for the night but it was also going to be a challenge for John as he was next to me on flyer peg 22 and he was going to get the usual stick that goes when we fish together. As Paul Jay called all in i returned to my peg got my top kit filled my cup full of bait went to ship out and could not find my number four section which John had said he heard drop in , smelling a rat i could not believe that he continued fishing whilst trying to stop himself from laughing as he had put my number four section inside the number five { nice one John 1 nil to you }. The smile on his face was wiped off 1 minute later as my paste rig settled then buried with a nine pound carp coming out a couple of minutes later. Around the lake the anglers on the carp park bank were all catching with Mark Chard on peg 32 catching more than most but was concious that Neil Riddy on peg 9 was keeping up with him, and for the next couple of hours fish were being caught from all around the lake as the fish were getting confident feeding late into the evening. At around 9.45 just as looking at your float was near impossible John turned on the lights ,and i can tell you it was no different that fishing in the daylight as each swim had its own light except Mark Orchard who had two one for his swim and one pointing directly into my eyes {thanks Mark}. For the rest of the match many carp were caught and many were lost in what was a really enjoyable match under the stars and it is really a challenge playing fish to 19-00 in the dark when you can’t see them .

In first place today was Mark Chard on peg 32 by the hut who had his son for company, and Mark fished the bush to his left just down the first slope ,fishing on the deck using red meat for hookbait. Mark fed fairly heavy to keep the fish in his swim and was rewarded with many fish to double figures in his final weight of 253-04 {well done Mark }. Just to show how many fish were in his peg Mark allowed his son to have a go and in ten minutes caught nearly more than Geoff and John. In second place and giving Mark a good run for his money was Neil Riddy opposite on peg 9 and Neil fished the paste just in front of the bush to his right and again caught big fish in his weight of 229-04. Completing the frame was Wednesdays open  winner Mark Newbold who was amazingly fish just one peg off were he caught his massive weight in midweek. The funny thing Mark told me was that Paul Jay was feeding the bush to his left on peg 28 and Mark would fish to the right of it and steal Paul’s fish from him. After five hours Mark had just kept in front of the chasing pack with his weight of 176-00 and his second pick-up in a week.

After the match the anglers were served a lovely barbeque by Pauline and John helped also by Gemma Doyle which the anglers thoroughly enjoyed and they would like to say thanks to both for a really enjoyable evening.

John will be holding a few more night matches this year so if you would like to experience fishing with a difference please keep an eye out for the next date which will be posted shortly, places are limited due to the number of lights available and the health and safety that is required with so many anglers around the lake.
