Friday Open Night Match. 24th Sept 2010

Night time at Rolfs

9 anglers turned up to fish the night match at the lake. A few people were also camping over so they could fish the open match on Saturday. Some people had dropped out meaning we could all get on the big lake.

The draw took place and the normal flyer pegs 32 and 9 went to Marcus Burgess (budgie) and John Bennett.

The weather at the lake was cold and dark anyway but as the all in came at 7.45 it was dark already and the lights were turned on. First to catch was Neil Riddy on peg 23 who was fishing on the tip rod. Mark Chard on peg 10 was also right in to fish and had a very good start catching 6 or 7 fish in the first hour.

Budgie fishing on Peg 32 was a different story though, his first fish was a skimmer followed by a chub and was struggling to get the carp to bite like most of the other anglers. I had managed to get 4 carp in the net in the first hour fishing from peg 18.

The temperature dropped throughout the match to 2 degree’s. We had a small rain amount of rain before the mist rolled in. Justin Watkins fishing from peg 11 had started catching well along with John Bennett on his home peg 9 ๐Ÿ˜€

The rest of the match was a complete struggle for most and everyone was very cold and eager to get round to have a warm by the BBQ by the end of the match. John had laid on some good food that was been cooked by master chief Dave Whiteman ๐Ÿ˜€

While the BBQ warmed up the weigh in was done but word was that Justin had won it and indeed he had. John thought he may have enough to beat him but was just a few fish short.

Neil was right too, John indeed drew peg 8 on the Saturday Open. More on that later…..

Well done to Justin, fine win on a hard match. ๐Ÿ™‚ He also takes the Peg King for peg 11 ๐Ÿ˜€

Rolfslake Wednesday Open 15th September 2010

One carp seperates top 4.

After a mad rush form work to get to todays match i was greeted with another top field in todays mid-week open. I have Neil Riddy to thank for my peg 8 draw and another battle with the big carp thank live in this peg { thanks Neil }.

Around the lake the ususal suspects were on the flyers with Derek Hammond on peg 9, John Bennett on form peg 6, Paul Jay on 10, Neil Riddy was on peg 4ย and Andy Quarmby on peg 32 by the hut. As the all in was called i was still setting up but no one was flying away so i was not bothered to be starting 20 minutes late.

Spare a thought for Nick Dean on peg 7 as he was not upto speed with my and John Bennetts season battle and also the pirate theme so he was bemused when i showed him the gifts of an eye patch, a pistol a skull necklace and a bag of gold coins left on my empty peg waiting for my arrival. Also Nick had to endure the banter between us for the five hours and also my terrets which was in full flow by the end of the match.

From what i could see the anglers on the car park bank were having the odd few fish with Roy making a few visits to the weigh station so he seemed to be pulling away. It was slow in the small lake with only Nick on 7 really having any success by fishing the bomb over to the rope but only coming back with small carp to 5lb so it was going to take a few to make a good weight.

In first place today was Andy Quarmby on peg 32 who like most started very slow but Andy was still picking off a few fish either fishing shallow long with pellet, 6 metres on the deck or over the bush towards peg 33. Towards the end of the match Andy started to get a few bigger fish on his two short lines and in the end was only one fish ahead of the rest { well done Andy }.

Andy Quarmby and another victory down on the lake.

In second place and on a very good run of drawing pegs { sorry i mean form } was Neil Riddy on peg 4 and Neil was another angler out of view so he was catching without anyone taking notice. Neils main catching line was the margins to his right as he saw fish boiling there and also caught big fish to double figures and after five hours caught 165-14 for another framing weight. Completing the frame was Paul Jay on peg 10 and Paul mainly fished longย down the margins to hisย left using banded pellet feeding heavy and had fish to double figures in his net { sorry on the board } in his weight of 164-14.

Neil Riddy on a roll down on the lake.

The one thing i have noticed in the last few weeks is that the really big fish to 20lb + are really having a go and pushing the small carp of 10lb out of the way and during each match there are at least 40 weigh fish on the boards and most are around the 12 to 19lb bracket. There are also many big fish being hooked and destroying both strong rigs and top kits so please make sure your gear is up to to the job.

Place Angler Peg Weight ย
1st Andy Quarmby 32 172-12 Rolfslake
2nd Neil Riddy 4 165-14 Rolfslake
3rd Paul Jay 10 164-14 Rolfslake
4th Roy 26 162-10 Rolfslake
5th Derek Hammond 9 140-00 Banbury Gunsmiths
6th John Bennett 6 128-00 Rolfslake
7th Nick Dean 7 120-04 Rolfslake
8th Eddie Taylor-Green 8 60-08 Rolfslake

As for me i had another nightmare day not only being stuck close to John and having to endure his banter for five hours , but having the right method and feeding but i was smashed out of sight by the big fish under the bush to my left. By fishing just down the ledge under the bush i had lots of bites and hooked fish but their desire to want to get either to the far bank or into the big lake cost me dear as i lost between 20-25 fish and got smashed up 5 times. I just could not calm down and sort it out and at the end was in full terret mode as i was totally frustrated. Add the fact by the way that John was giving me stick i thought i was going to be thrashed by him and lose my two month lead to him made it even worse, but in the end it was the three big fish in a row 18-12, 18-12 and 19-12 that did it for him to take John into a 10-9 lead.

Cove AC Match. 12th Sept 2010

The lake fished very hard for the Cove AC lads today. Two 20lb plus carp were caught by Dick on peg 6 and Adie on peg 9 though, John reports that the bigger fish were showing today but not in their normal numbers.

Talk Angling Rive T Match. Thurs 9th 2010

Talk Angling Forums were visiting the lake today, the match was been organised by Larry Teepot and Rive T. The draw was supposed to be at 9.30am but due to Larry taking a tour of Oxford it was delayed until 10.30. Fishing was then changed to 12-5pm.

I got to the lake nice and early having secured a last minute slot for the match as I had the day off work, Thanks Larry.

The draw was soon done and everyone headed off to their pegs for the day. I had drawn peg 32 and still had rigs made up for that peg so I was set up by 11am which left an hour to go and take some pictures.

The match was started at 12 by John ringing the bell and first angler that I could see in to a fish was Justin on peg 7. He had not even fed anything at 16 meters and foul hooked a fish. In which time I had lost a fish and hooked and landed a 17lb’er. Not a bad way to started the match.

Throughout the rest of the match Justin continued to suffer from fouled fish problems. Mugger was struggling for a bite until he went down the left hand bush and managed to finally find the fish but they came in a slow run. I had had a tremendous start but had lost the fish on the 7 meter line and all the fish from the two bush lines were foul hooked.

The Brick over on peg 9 was putting together a great weight fishing from his right hand bush line.

The Brick tempting the fish out from the bush

20 Meter bob was snaring fish fishing shallow and mugging the odd fish from the surface scum that had gathered in front of his peg. He was building a good weight up with a lot of big fish and making regular visits to the weigh station.

Down in the little lake peg 4 was really struggling which is quite shocking. Pegs 38 and 40 were having a good run of fish. Up in the big lake Rive T, Jay and Silverfish were putting a few in the nets.

Rive T with a weigher

Just minutes before the ringing of the bell to signal the All Out mugger on peg 8 hooked in to one last fish. It turned out that fish just put him in front of me by 4lb ๐Ÿ™ TYPICAL MUGGER….

After a smooth weigh in todays winner was revealed and I had my revenge on Justin after his pee taking on Facebook all week, I didn’t give it him back as “What goes around comes around” in the world of fishing ๐Ÿ˜€
