Winter League Round 4. 2nd Jan 2011

Nearly all the ice has gone now

Welcome to 2011. After the last match was cancelled there has been quite a break for some of the winter league lads. Frank Hardie, Steve Waters and John were at the lake on Saturday breaking up the ice and running the aerators to try and clear the ice for the first match of 2011 and what a great job they did too. Nearly all the ice had melted.

Nearly clear of ice

Most of the ice was in the little lake and up by pegs 19 and 20 in the big lake.

As the Christmas match was cancelled this would double up as the xmas match so everyone brought along a bottle for the raffle at the end of the match. And there was also a lovely hamper up for grabs, chosen by a peg number been pulled out the bag and whoever was on that peg wins the hamper.

No drinking and Driving 😀

The Hamper donated by John and Pauline

Everyone was milling around waiting for the draw and wishing each other best wishes for the new year.

John Bennett waiting the get the draw underway.

The draw is underway

Mick Lane writing him memoirs

The flyers going early

Gary Haisman and Jon Walker eager to draw

Steve Wilson, Malc Doyle, Paul Jay and Clive Pritchard

Jon is on 21

Gem Doyle and Dai Thomas

Its not that cold John 😀

With the draw out the way the match was starting at 10.30 so everyone was off to get ready. Only one peg needed breaking out and that was poor Gary Haisman on peg 16. Everyone else only really had to scoop out and move the ice from their swims.

Ady clearing his swim on peg 23

My Peg, Peg 24 clear to 13 meters

The match got underway and there was a lack of movement from anyone floats. In the first half an hour I had managed to hook and land a carp about 8-9lb (I thought :D) and comments were been shouted “Jammy bugger”

Malc had managed 2 roach fish at 13m :O He never fishes more than 6m so this is a rare occasion for Malc 😀 Ady on peg 23 had also managed 2 roach but had hooked and lost the first carp of the day as he was fishing on fine gear.

Not much to report on the middle of the match apart from Mick Lane on peg 13 and Derek Hammond on peg 10 locked in a silver fish battle, both catching regularly. It was going to be a close call between them.

During the last hour the action started 😀 Phil Powell over on peg 18 had managed to hook in to a carp but having light elastic and lots of ice in his swim was struggling to land it. After a nice fight he put the net under his carp. “Bugger” I thought and shouted over “How big is it” I thought it looked about 10lb from where I was sitting. He shouted back “Same as yours” 😀

Phil Playing his carp

The smile says it all

Then to put the nail in the coffin and stop me from winning my section Geoff Palmer over on peg 14 strikes in to his first and only fish a bigger carp. After playing it VERY carefully he lands it and it did look over 10lbs and indeed it was. 13lb 8oz to take the section.

With half an hour to go Jon Walker on peg 21 had a nice stream of elastic flowing from his pole, carp on……. Malc gets his camera out and takes a few photo’s ….. Carp OFF. It had straightened his size 22 hook.

The one that got away from Jon walker

With 25 minutes to go Pete Arnold on peg 8 decided to chuck the feeder across and this resulted in two carp to win the match. Fantastic, well done Pete.

The Little lake had been the hardest with only 2oz winning the section. There was a battle between Steve Waters on peg 2 and Frank Hardie on peg 7 who both had 4 fish, 2 roach and 2 perch. Frank just edged it by half an oz 😀

Overall and B Section Winner Pete Arnold.

Hard fought A Section Winner, Frank Hardie

C Section Winner, Geoff Palmer

Pauline supplying everyone with some hot soup after the match. Thank you

After the soup John drew a number from the bag to decide who would win the lovely hamper. Peg 34 was drawn, on that peg today was Clive Pritchard but he had gone home so another name was drawn. The Hamper went to Dai Thomas. You should have stayed Clive 😀

As you can see its VERY close at the top now with only two matches remaining.

Well done to everyone that caught today as it was a very hard match indeed. Pete Arnold gets his picture in the banner as he is now the new Lake King, not sure 19lb 8oz will last too long though 😀

I have added the new 2011 Peg King board so everyone that caught in this match is now a peg king.

The next winter league match is on the 16th Jan.

Thanks for reading, Eddie, John and Si.

19th Dec 2010. Hard man contest at the Lake…

A bit frosty down the lake

As the winter league match was cancelled John ran a little open for anyone brave or stupid enough to get to the lake today. 😀

Kev Dolton (camera man, thank you) John Bennett, Steve Water and Frank Hardie braved the minus 9 conditions to try and catch some fish. Everyone caught some bits and a good laugh was had despite everyone been freezing cold.

Here are a few pictures Kev took today for those who have not seen them on Facebook.

Brave or Stupid, you decide 😀

Steve Waters. Least his head looks warm

Kev risked life and limb to get this shot

Oh no poor Eddie has frozen solid 🙁

Kev, man on the camera

Frank Hardie loving it

John Bennett Only came today to test out his new 4x4

Winter League Round 3. 5th Dec 2010

Cold Morning at the Lake

Round 3 of the winter league and Neil Riddy returns to fish and brings the ice with him, just like last year. Thanks Neil 😀

The weather at the lake at 9am was quite nice, not to cold and the sun was shining. John got the draw underway early today to allow people extra time to break the ice on thier pegs. Peg 32, 30, and 28 were free of ice as the wind had cleared it coming off the car park. Everyone had a cup of coffee except Derek who had his Redbull still wearing his slippers 😀

With the draw done people made their way round the lake to get their pegs to break the ice. On average it was between 1.5 inches to 2.5 inches. Malc had drawn peg 32 , Liam on peg 30 and Frank on peg 28 so they had no ice to break but went and helped their teams mates break their swims out… Fair play 🙂

The Big Lake

Looking towards the little lake

The all in was called by Malc at 11am and todays match was going to be 4 and a half hours. Derek Hammond on peg 34 had a carp right away while the rest of the little lake looked on with envy.

Derek Hammond on peg 34

The rest of us were not quite so lucky and were staring at a motionless floats for the start of the match. A few screams went out round the lake when people caught their first fish, myself included 😀 I had a perch from the swim in front of me promptly followed by another. But that was it for another hour. I did manage to catch 18 in total through the rest of the match though.

Paul gave me the keys to his peg, Peg 10

I then watched Phil on peg 9 catching what I think were fish but were not much bigger that my toenail 😀 Malc was impressed with the size of them and shouts across with some encouragement. Phil then slipped his net under a 2lb+ perch and wiped the smiles off our faces 😛

Phil Powell on peg 9

Malc over on peg 32

Geoff to my left on peg 13 was having a nightmare struggling to get a bite along with Steve on peg 14. I might as well say everyone was struggling for a bite really. Pat over on peg 26 was catching some bits, Liam on peg 30 was having some ‘netter’ silvers so he was doing ok. Frank on peg 28 had hooked 2 carp and lost them but hooked in to another and got it in. John was catching some valuable bits over on peg 21 too but failed to find where the carp had gone from last match.

Geoff on peg 13. No bites

But plenty of ice

Steve on peg 14. Another without a bite but still smiling

Fresh back from his honeymoon to catch one perch, Neil Riddy on peg 16

Clive on peg 18, Also one perch but it was bigger than Neils. In fact Double the size

John on peg 21, no wonder he is smiling.

Marcus on peg 23. Another without a bite but still had a warm head thanks to that lovely hat

Sorry Earnie, you picture came out all burred as you was moving that fast 😀

Pat on peg 26 finding a few bits, enough to win C Section. Well done.

Frank on peg 28. His carp was enough to win the match and B Section along with some silvers. Well done.

Liam on peg 30

Down in the little lake there was a bit of a commotion on peg 7 as Paul attempted to play a foul hooked carp on the rod. Malc shouted his normal encouragement across….. “You better hurry up and land that or your rod eyes will freeze up” 😀 He eventually got it in and it was enough to give him the A section win.

Dai and Steve on pegs 2 and 4 were dry while Steve and Pete on pegs 6 and 37 had both managed 1 fish, Mick Lane on peg 40 had caught slightly more. Derek on peg 34 had got some silvers to back up his carp but it was just short of Paul’s weight. Ian McCulloch was filling in for Gary Haisman today on peg 8 and was also fishless until 15 minutes from the end when he managed two perch.

Pete was happy he had one fish on peg 37

Mick 'Lurker' Lane on peg 40

Dai on peg 2. No bites today.

Steve won the last match but never caught from peg 4 in this match

Steve on peg 6, one perch 5 mins from the end gave him valuable points

Jammy bugger Paul Jay on peg 7. Least he was allowed to put his 12lb'er in the net today 😀 Well Done.

Ian on peg 8, 2 late fish got him some points for his team

In the last hour and half freezing fog had moved on to the lake and was freezing my swim back up, I had to keep breaking it with my cupping kit. The fog was quite bad and you could hardly see across the other side of the lake. The temperature also plummeted as the fog was wetting everything and then freezing.

The fog before it got worse taken by Malc, thanks.

3.30 and Malc called the all out much to everyone’s relief. Everyone was soon packed up and round to the hut for a hot drink. With not much been caught and a army of weigher inners the weigh in was soon done. Back round to the hut where John has prepared some hot tomato soup for everyone, Thanks John. It burnt the roof of my mouth off but warmed me up 😀
