Wednesday Open Match. 22nd February 2012

Another tough day down the lake.

After the much better weights from the pairs series last weekend, a merry band of nine anglers turned up to fish the Wednesday open today. With the very poor weights from the small lake on Sunday it was a very easy choice to choose the big lake and at about 10 O,clock the draw was called and the anglers drew their pegs hoping to draw between 16 and 24 as the fish had moved to this part of the lake.

One thing that looked familiar from the photo’s from last Sundays match was a picture of Paul Jays fish in a pink bucket which looked very similar to my daughters gold fish bucket that she had won down the fair so i now know where Paul has been practising . John tells me that today was a totally different day to the weekends weather as it was very cold with a gusting wind and the dreaded rain so a tough 5 hours was going to be endured by the anglers. With the variety of fish being caught lately the big decision for the anglers was to go for carp or to go for the big skimmers as Steve Waters did last Wednesday.

John also tells me that there were a few carp lost and a few bites missed but the winner of todays match was Geoff Edwards who was fishing peg 19 at the end of the big lake. Geoff managed to catch carp by fishing on the pole using pellet and corn and after a hard 5 hours weighed 58-00. In second place was lake regular Neil Riddy with 36-00 from peg 16 with Paul Jay in third with 27-04.

Todays winner Geoff Edwards.

Rolfs Lake Spring League. Round 3. 19th Feb 2012

Round 3 of the Spring Pairs league and the lake had fished hard on the previous Wednesday open Match. I was fishing today taking the place of Phil Powell who is still recovering at home (get well soon mate) Got to the lake just in time for the draw and saw the usual suspects loitering  around the car park. I was to be in the big lake (B Section) so wanted 14,15 or 25 but came away with peg 18 and was a little disappointed to be honest.

Shock of the day was the fact that Mick Lane had for the first time in 10 years drew a bad peg, He had pulled out peg 36 in the little lake but was not fazed. Weather wise there was a gusty wind blowing up towards pegs 19 and 20 across the big lake. It was quite cold but Sunny.

The lake looking nice with all the colours.

With the match underway at 10.45 it was only about 2 minutes before Mark Newbold on peg 15 hooked into a carp but lost it shipping back, out again and he had another and managed to get it in while I sat looking at my tip twitching about all over the place with liners. Jim over on peg 22 was fishing long to the bush and was already into his second fish as was Pete Arnold on peg 25 fishing to bomb and had already had one.

Steve Waters on peg 23 was switching between long pole and waggler and it was starting to pay off picking up the odd fish on the wag. About an hour in to the match and Jim was already getting up to get another keepnet (take note Pete 😛 ) I had managed to get one carp on the pole at 13m and Pat Pritchard on peg 17 had also just landed his first fish on the bomb. Mark had also manage a few more but was loosing a few at well. Taking of loosing a few me and Pat had lost 3 carp each as well due to being foul hooked.

Half way into the match and word was the little lake was fishing very hard indeed, even John Bennett on peg 34 which is normally good for a few fish was carpless while magic Mick Lane had managed to get one carp. Pete Tapp on peg 7 had decided to pack up and go home after his team mate couldn’t fish and was struggling to get a bite. Andy Quarmby fishing on peg 10 was leading A section putting together a cracking bag of silvers which included 2 nice bream. There was no doubt about who was leading B section, Jim was still pulling the fish from the corner and showed no sign’s on slowing down. Jeff on peg 26 and Michael on peg 28 were both Struggling but Jeff had managed to catch a few carp to reward him for his efforts whilst Michael had a few silvers.

I had waited for the sun to come round on to the top end of the big lake before switching to fishing 13m down the edge to my left. I had fed some corn and pellet and then dropped a piece of corn over it and instantly had a bite when the corn dropped to the deck. I managed to get 5 fishing from the edge in 30 minutes before they buggered off. In the last hour of the match Steve was really making the wag work and was getting carp consistently. Mark had not had a bite for 2 hours, it seemed the fish had moved down to peg 14 where John Draper was starting to catch a few. Me and Pat had managed a few more carp each fishing long on the pole in front of us.

In the closing 30 minutes a few things happened to change the overall scores of the day. John Bennett had winkled 2 small carp out the beat his winter league team mate Mick Lane in their mini match. Also Neil Hutchins on peg 13 had managed to land a big fouled hooked carp to put Andy Quarmby 2nd in his section for the 3rd match in a row.

Neil Hutchins with 2 big Rolfs Lake carp.

I have to say thanks to the lads in our section for the banter on the day, my pole was bouncing around all day because I was laughing that much 😀

Saturday Open Match. 18th February 2012

With all the ice gone and the weather seeming to be improving it seem some of the fish down the lake were in the mood for a bit of food today, The fish were not carp though. The illusive Bream and skimmers showed up today and in big numbers too.

During the winter league I think only myself and Dave Wightman caught a bream but today Steve Waters fishing from peg 33 had them queuing up for his bait. At the end of the match he was showing no signs of slowing down either, a possible ton of skimmers/bream today if he had a bit longer John Bennett said.

He managed 4 carp for 26-12 and 60lb of bream/skimmers to take the win today. Well done.

John has asked me to ask the anglers fishing this weekends pairs match to please bring a silvers keepnet as the ones down the lake currently need repairing so as to not loose valuable fish through holes in the nets.

Also there will be an open match on Saturday as the lake is now virtually ice free and the draw is 9.30 fish 10.30 – 3.30

Rolfslake’s Wednesday Open 8th February 2012

A tough day down the lake as the artic weather continues.

John tells me that as the anglers arrived down the lake they were greeted with ice so thick you could of driven a car across the lake. It was decided that todays match was to be a walk off with the anglers deciding on which swim would take the least amount of effort to break through, but i can tell you that would of been no easy choice. With the weather at about minus 2 and a horrible cold breeze going across the lake you could of though the seven anglers must of been mad to spend 5 hours freezing hoping for a bite.

The winner today was John Draper fishing peg 30 by the hut and John had managed to cut out a swim to 13 metres and by using expander pellet he managed to put together an all silver weight which consisted of some good skimmers which were happy to feed in the cold, and at the end of a tough 5 hours weighed 15-08 for another victory { well done John }.

In the second place was Paul Jay who was also on the carpark bank this time peg 25 and Paul also caught all silvers this time using maggots for his weight of 8-08 closely followed by Neil Riddy on peg 10 who also caught silvers for his weight of 8-04.

Whilst many fisheries around the country remain closed due to the lakes John and Paul have been working really hard in keeping parts of the lake ice free so not only can the anglers fish but also that the fish stay protected by having some open water for the oxygen to enter and the gasses to escape. The fact that there were no carp caught today just goes to show two things  1. carp dont like feeding in really cold water and 2. there are plenty of other species to catch at Rolfslake.
