Rolfslake Wednesday Open 9th May 2012

The only thing missing today was Noah and the ark.

John tells me that today that the weather was awfull with driving rain, soggy muddy ground underfoot and an annoying swirling wind in other words treacherous. The 10 brave or mad anglers today had not only to contend with the weather but the rising water in the lake so our visiting club anglers please dont forget you boots or your feet will get wet on some of the pegs.

Anyway today saw a return of 3 of the 4 Cartel members with the only one missing being me Eddie but as usual some things do not change like Phil , John and Lurker Lane all drawing flyer pegs so the rest of the anglers were going to have to put a real effort in todays match. John tells me the story of the day was both Geoff Edwards and Mick Lane caught big fish early on with Phil on peg 8 catching a mixed bag of fish with the other anglers catching a steady run of carp throught the match.

First place for Phil Powell with 195-00.

In first place today was Phil Powell fresh from his victory last week, but today was two pegs down on peg 8 in the junction between the big and small lake. Phil today fished across to the far bank grasses catching chub to 5lb to start with then catching bream and carp to finish using what John tells me was pellet and meat hook bait feeding pellet, and after 5 hours Phil put a hard earned 195-00 { well done Phil }.

Mick Lane in second place.

In second place was Cartel member Mick Lane on motorway bank peg 16 who started on the tip catching 4 big carp for 60lb in the first hour switching to the pole to catch even more carp on pellet feeding pellet for his weight of 163-00. Completing the frame was Geoff Edwards who also claimed the peg king for peg 40 and John aslo tells me Geoff started off fishing down the edge catching some big carp to start with switching to an out line fishing on the deck again catch fish to double figures for his weight of 137-08.

Geoff Edwards in third place.

To all our visiting anglers please do not forget to bring both your wellies and your landing nets to the lake as John and Pauline are currently both repairing and replacing them but please make sure that they are big enough to land fish to 20lb as there are currently lots of big carp coming out from all pegs around the lake. If the weather settles down for the weekend then I expect a winning weight in excess of 200lb as the regulars are getting close to that in rubbish conditions in what should be the start of the main bagging session and with half good weather then you will be able to present the bait to the fish correctly.

You could catch a carp the size of Olllie who weighs 18-08.

Thanks for reading John, Simon and Eddie.

Monday Open Match. 7th May 2012

.

Today 21 anglers turned for the bank holiday open match. The weather had once again taken a turn for the worse and the wind had done a 180° and the rain had started. The banks had only just dried out from last weeks heavy rain too.

All the anglers drew and there were 3 pegs left in the bag, Mick Hughes wanted what was left so that left me and Paul Glenfield. There was 8, 32 and 36 left in the bag and poor Paul put his hand in and pulled out 36, I pulled out 8 which left 32 for yesterdays winner Mick.

Fishing was from 12pm to 5pm. The all in was shouted by Paul Jay. Most of the anglers were in to fish right away but then struggling for bites for the rest of the match. Simon on peg 8 had a run of 6 weighers in the first 30 minutes adn then the wind picked up making presentation very difficult. Joff Rogers on peg 7 was having a steady run of fish throughout the match but he was being plagued by foul hooked fish which resulted in a broken 6th section on his Airity, he lost a total of 16 fish.

Mick Jones on peg 2 was catching steadily too chucking the bomb to the corner by peg 3. Just 4oz behind him was Dave Wightman on peg 34 who had more fish but they were a lot smaller in size. Phil Powell on yesterdays winning peg 6 was making the most of the fish that were still in the peg and was steadily edging away with the match helped along by a run of weighers in the last 30 minutes.

Up in the big lake Dan Jones on peg 10 was not far behind Phil but (source, John Bennett) he was spending too much time on his phone and loosing and missing bites, this probably cost him the match and certainly a ton weight at the lake but he still caught enough to take to section win, Well done. The C Section battle was between the purple plonker (Roger Young) on peg 16 and  Robin Cave on peg 26. As with A section it was going to be a close finish with just 8oz separating the two. Robin just came out ahead, Well done Robin.

Phil Powell. Winning peg 6

Some of Robin Caves fish.

There's always tomorrow or Wednesday or Saturday or Monday or next Wednesday Dai 😛 😀

The only thing Mick Lane picked up today was Olly the dog 😀

Rain stops and the wind dies down AFTER the match again.

Rolfslake Sunday Open 6th May 2012

Cold lake water slows the fishing down.

With this being the last Sunday match until at least September due to the club match bookings taking over from now, it was nice to see 14 anglers showing up at short notice for todays open match. On arriving I got my normal amount of abuse from John but because I was sporting a black eye I ended getting plenty of banter from the rest ,so a quiet return to fishing was going to be a thing of fantasy and a long 5 hours for me today.

The weather was mild with a swirling breeze and a chance of sun at sometime in the day but the water in the lake was really cold due to the heavy rain in the previous week so that could put the fish off feeding but with crusing fish to be seen at least it gave the anglers some hope. With draw under way i found it amazing how the same anglers always draw the flyers as Geoff Edwards had drawn peg 18 with the wind blowing into it, Paul Jay had been evicted from peg 18 and was now the neighbour on peg 16 and John Bennett who never draws a bad peg was on peg 8 in the junction between the two lakes. For me with three pegs left found out that my favourite peg 6 was still there together with 14 and 26 so with my theory of whatever peg i touched first was the peg i pulled out was blown apart as i drew peg 26 on the car park bank leaving Mick Hughes on 6 and Malc Doyle on 14.

The story of the match saw in form Dai Thomas on peg 7 catch fish straight away and led the field for most of the match but towards the end was caught by Hydro 2000 angler Mick Hughes who was fishing next door on peg 6. Mick caught fish to double figures by fishing a short 6-7 metres line straight out and down the edge fishing i believe pellet hook baits and after 5 hours put a hard earned 133-12 for a match win { well done Mick }. In second place saw Dai on peg 7 also catch big carp but in the end fell 3 carp behind with his weight of 113-04 of pole caught carp. In third place was Geoff Edwards who was on motorway bank peg 18 who had a frustrating day catching 8 carp for 74-00 but also losing 11 fishing long down the edge to his left.

The pirate goes down with the ship.

Today mine and Johns seasons battle resumed after our last match which was a team event, and with John leaving the megafone by the hut at least it was going to be more quiet than normal. With John drawing 8 and me 26 it was never going to be a competitive battle as the fish had to travel between the two parts of the lake and John was there waiting for them and after 5 hours i was sure he had thrashed me only to find out that it had fished hard for him and he only had 72-04 to my 37-06 so maybe i should of tried harder for 3 more fish but in the end it was another victory for John { well done John ].

This was the score before todays match.

The score now stands at

JOHN 6

EDDIE 2

All angler please take note.

Until further notice could all club and match anglers bring their own landing nets as the current one are being repaired and replaced and there are not enough to go around for all anglers, but please make sure they are big enough to get big fish in as there are currently big fish being caught to over 20lb  thank you.

Monday Open Match. 30th April 2012

Just to inform the Monday match regulars that Next Monday’s (7th May) match is a Bank Holiday open and the draw will be at 10.30 am NOT 1pm like normal Monday Opens. Thank you.

Todays Open Paul tried to peg it so the anglers were out of the wind much the same as John did yesterday.

Mick Chappell was making the most of being in the little lake on his own and scores his first double ton of the year, Well done Mick 🙂 Paul Jay was at his second home (Peg 18) and started fishing once he had opened his mail and fed the dog 😛 Paul fished down to the bush and on the waggler. Having 55lb 8oz Dai on peg 16 was not expecting to frame but nether the less he did. Well done.
