Rolfslake Wednesday Open 29th August 2012

Super peg 16 comes good again.

Today Rolfslake welcomed 3 of the 4 Drennan Knockout cup semi finalists which is due to be fished down the lake very soon which swelled the attendance for this match. The angler were greeted with rain at the draw during the match and at the end so a good set of waterproofs were the order of the day as it was relentless and also very cold or was it i was totaly soaked.

The story of the match was it was the usual slow start with a few fish being foul hooked and lost in the big lake and a few fish being landed in the small lake but i think a combination of rain, a stiff breeze and a full money put the fish off their normal feeding pattern so it was tough going for a few of the anglers today.

The winner today was lake regular Mick Jones who had drawn super 16 on the motorway bank the scene of last weekends capture of lake king by Simon Mound with 360-11 so Mick was very hopeful of a good days fishing and today was not disappointed. Mick started down the right hand edge but was plagued with silvers attacking his bait so after and an hour and a half adjusted both his rig and his fishing line to a 5 metre straight out line feeding pellet and then had the carp lined up. Mick caught fish to double figures which seem to hang around this peg and by using i am sure both meat and pellet hookbaits both fished on the deck it helped Mick amass his great weight of 168-00 on a difficult day {well done Mick }.

In a close battle for second saw Micheal Corsini { who has spent most of the school holidays down the lake } and Simon Wilsmore { Milo } where on pegs 13 and 24 in the big lake and Micheal just managed to sneak second due to his bigger weigher fish which gave him 138-06 to Simons 127-08 in what turned out to be a good practise session for Simon’s forthcoming semi final.

21 ANGLERS FISHED

Rolfslake Bank Holiday Sunday Open 26th August 2012.

Super Si rocks the 400lb mark and takes the King of the lake.

Today saw the anglers turn up for the second match of the bank holiday weekend and hopefully an improvement to the fishing and a chance to win the £100 golden peg kindly donated by lake owner John Bennett. The match today was well attended with Rob Wooton one of the Drennan knockout cup semi finalists in attendance today trying to get an idea of the methods required at Rolfslake for the forthcoming semi finals being held down the lake.

After yesterdays poor showing in the small lake a good draw in the big lake was what was required and with a sunny day with a breeze on the lake the signs were looking good. John tells me the story of the day was the little lake fished hard again with most of the action coming font the center of the big lake with anglers still losing plenty of foul hooked fish but the top 9 anglers still weighing over a ton and for one angler today a magic weight was on the cards as he spent alot of time getting off his box to weigh fish.

That angler today was inform and probably Rolfslake’s most consistent angler of the year so far Simon Mound who today found himself back on favourite peg 16 on the motorway bank. Simon tells me that after catching a quick fish shallow  straight out in front he thinks in hindsight that was probably 20 minutes wasted trying to catch some more with no success and switched to a five metre line straight out in front and again caught one carp but no more .

It was then that Simon switched to the right hand margin down the silt bank the same area that gave him his last PB of 312lb a couple of weeks ago and from that point the carp were there ready and waiting. The key moment in Simons match was on playing a carp it got caught up on the snag that has lost many anglers fish, but this time the snag came up with fish and it was removed from the water together with the fish and from this moment the fishing just got better. Simon was today fishing banded 8mm pellet  feeding pellet through a kinder pot to get the fish lined up and Simon caught 19 fish to 19lb for a board weight of nearly 240lb to go together with his net fish. The rig was a straight forward 0.24 line fished with a Jon Walker diamond float finished with a 14 hook and Simon worked his rig to tempt the carp that were in his peg.

As the weigh-in commenced the anglers gathered to see if Simon had bettered his PB of 312lb and with his net fish taking 4 weighs the total of Simons efforts was a fantastic 360-11 for not only a new PB but he took the king of the lake title off John Walker { very well done Simon } and with those wasted 20 minutes at the start and the loss of 7 carp Simon would of got close to the world 5 hour match record set 7 years ago at Rolfslake of 490-08 .

In second place today was Rob Wooton who was on the car park bank peg 30 and the information that i have tells me that Rob fished at short range both on the deck and at mid depth fishing pellet to catch carp to double figures in his good weight of 188-04 and a good workout for his semi final coming up. Completing the frame was another king of the lake holder Geoff Edwards who defied the poor fishing in the small lake putting another good weight of fish to double figures on peg 7 of 151-09.

New King of the lake Simon Mound 360-11 { well done Simon }

Rolfslake Saturday Open 25th August 2012

Today saw the first of three bank holiday weekend opens but the sun from earlier in the week today turned to thundery showers then getting sunny and warm then back to rain.

John tells me that today 14 anglers turned up hoping for two things a draw in the big lake and hopefully having your peg drawn after the match as golden peg as ther was £100 on offer very kindly donated by John. The fishing continued on from Wednesdays match where the small lake fished very hard with anglers only catching a few carp and John thinks this was due to very little wind blowing on the lake.

Todays match was won on form peg 16 and the angler lucky enough to draw this peg was Gary Kelsey and Gary fished a short line of 5 metres fished on the deck using meat and paste feeding pellet catching fish to double figures in his weight of 183-12 { well done Gary ]. The next two in the frame Andy Quarmby and Simon Mound were pegged next to each other on the car park bank on pegs 30 and 32 and after 5 hours were seperated by 4 fish with Andy coming second with 143-12 to Simons 104-09.

Jinx Match 4. 18th August 2012

.

Today the jinxsters gathered at the lake for their 4th match of 6 matches. As Geoff Palmer, Dave Moore and Ade Williams could not fish today Michael Corsini and Paul Jay were at hand to fill in to even up the sections. Today was a fresh draw again so today would be the decider for each anglers final Sections. Before the draw there was a small matter of the MINX hat and that honour fell to Paul Roberts.

With the sun blazing down, Very little wind and a tough night match last night it was looking like it was going to be a hard match. Whilst most anglers were still cupping out bait Simon on peg 8 had landed his first fish, a 14lb’er from his 5m line, he went back out and latched into another carp pretty much right away. Most other angler had a very slow start. Kev Loveland on peg 6 also had a good start with a 17lb’er to start his match off.

In the big lake there was a lot of banter going on mainly at Michael Corsini’s expense and he took it all on the chin in his first ever Jinx Match. Everyone was suffering from foul hooked fish again so there was a lot of fish being hooked and lost. Simon on peg 8 was loosing a lot fishing long to the far bank on the pole but still managing to get a few in the mouth.

During the final 2 hours of the match most people started to catch, clouds had moved over the lake and it seemed to settle the fish down and get them feeding. Mat Edwards on peg 40 had started putting a few fish together after a quiet start as was Neil Riddy on peg 16 fishing down the right hand edge. Paul Jay fishing peg 13 (again) was catching fish from all his lines. Simon had managed to get the fish going on his 5m line and was putting a good run of together despite loosing a few.
