Rolfslake Wednesday Open 22nd June 2011.

A new visitor down the lake the Black Stallion.

Rolfslake silver fish match record broken.

With Rolfslake currently fishing very oddly you did not know whether it would fish great or very hard and with last Wednesdays match still very vivid in my memory i was hoping for a good afternoons fishing. With the anglers eager at the draw it was nice to see returning angler Chris Telling at the lake as we had not seen him for a while as he had been trying very hard to qualify for the Fishomania final again.

As the draw was called the same thing happened as it normally does and that is the good anglers draw the flyers and the average pegs are left for the rest. Today my main target as usual was to beat John and when he drew peg 40 i knew i was in trouble as the bottom of the small lake was black with fish as the wind had been blowing into the corners for the last two days, and he must of been cured of his bad back because he was at his peg faster than Usain Bolt with a big smile. For me it was my favourite peg 6 but with the wind blowing across my peg and the sun in my eyes it made for a very frustrating and difficult match.

Elsewhere around the lake Mick Lane’s never ending drawing of good pegs with peg 34, Chris Telling was on carp form peg 32 ,Paul Jay was on peg 4 and newcomer Neil Richards was on peg 8 in the gap between the big and small lake.

The story of todays match was one frustration as the carp were very difficult to catch in any numbers with i think a total of 20 carp caught by all the anglers with many switching to try and catch a few silvers for a bit of sport and when Kev Doulton weighed in he must of had about 150 roach for 26lb and still did not frame.

Todays winner was Vespe /Miracle Baits sponsored Chris Telling who started off fishing the 6 metre line fishing paste with very little success but a change of tactics to fishing the long 13 metre + line made a little Rolfslake history. Chris fished the long line on the deck mainly for carp which he had a few to double figures but it was the bream which took his attention as by fishing with a big dendrabena fished over depth he managed to keep them coming in fact i have never seen an angler that had 1 carp net and 2 silver fish nets. Chris in total had 30 bream for a fantastic total of 75-08 and a NEW Rolfslake silver fish record and when added to his carp totalled 128-00 { very well done Chris }.

New silver fish record holder Vespe / Miracle Baits sponsored Chris Telling.

75-08 of Bream from peg 32.

In second place was Rolfslake’s Mick Lane who was fishing peg 34 in the small lake and he also struggled for the fish three hours but in the last two he caught small carp long down the edge towards the tree to his right. By fishing meat and pellet on the hook feeding pellet Mick kept the carp coming for another frame with his weight of 80-08 but still a low weight by his standards.

Second place Mick Lane.

Completing the frame was newcomer Neil Richards on peg 8 who had carp and 25lb of silvers for his weight of 38-08.

Kev Doulton with 25lb of silvers.

Paul Jay with 14lb of silvers.

Rolfslake 2 the Pirate stikes back.

There is not to say about our match today as with the sun in my eyes and the wind i could not see the bites but every now and then i would get a sharp pull on the pole tip from the carp whilst i was fishing paste but a change to corn got me out of jail with two carp for 19lb and 4 skimmers for 3lb for a total of 22-00.

That was in contrast to John who was on peg 40 and as soon as the match started the carp disappeared and John then struggled for the next 5 hours with a couple of lost carp and about 2lb of skimmers which he put back of in disgust.

The score between me and John now stands at:

Rolfslake Open Wednesday 15th June 2011

Tough day down the lake except for Jon Walker.

Today the anglers were hoping that the big weights from the Friday night match cotinued but as usual Rolfslake had other ideas.

The story of the match was there were plenty of fish cruising around but proving to be very difficult to catch and on a few pegs the fish were blowing but again they were not feeding in any numbers.

In first place and making it 4 WINS IN FOUR MATCHES was master float maker and lake king Jon Walker who today was on peg 6 on the motorway bank and in the small lake. Jon tells me he opted to fish two lines a long 13 metre line and a short 6 metre line fishing on the deck on both these lines and using a variety of baits corn, pellet and meat Jon was able to keep the fish coming. Jon today also had fish to double figures in his net and at the end of 5 hours put a very hard earned 138-08 on the scales for the win {well done Jon} but he even realised that this was a low weight for this time of year

In second place and an angler i had not seen for a while was fellow Cartel member Mick Lane, who was moaning about his lack of drawing good pegs recently but as we all know about Mick he would give Picasso a run for his money and went he took his hand out of the draw bag and saw peg 8 he got a few good luck comments i dont think.

Anyway Mick fished a variety of methods ,long across down the gap and to the bush to his left and by fishing meat and pellet Mick also caught fish to double figures in his final weight of 98-00 and a skimmer short of another ton weight.

Completing the frame was form angler Mark Newbold who was fishing on peg 14 in the big lake and he also struggled to catch but by rotating his fishing lines he managed to catch on shallow and full depth rigs using pellet and paste to catch his weight of 82-00 and continue his framing sequence.

Simon, John, Paul and I are currently working on the photo and feature board down the lake which we hope all our visiting anglers will find enjoyable and informative. If any of our visiting anglers take any pictures that they would like for us to consider putting in the board please send it to the the website and Simon ,John and I and we will have a look.

Also for all our visiting anglers please read the rules for the lake when you arrive as there are checks in place during the match and at the weigh-in to ensure none of the rules are broken . The rules are for the well being of the fish first and for for the fairness of all the anglers second as we do not want any of the big fish damaged by being put in keepnets for any period of time, and i know all anglers will support us in this subject.

The Pirate was lost at sea as the Bennett storm sunk the the pirate ship to gain another point.

With John on peg 10 and me on peg 22 we were both going to struggle today on a normal match and today it was going to be really hard.

I was only one peg away from where i caught nearly 250lb on Friday but it felt like i was fishing the M40 as the peg was devoid of fish and bites as peg 22 is a bit of hit and miss and today i am sure my paste approach which has served me well was to inflexible to catch anything other than carp and my reward for 5 hours fishing was 3 carp one tiny carp of a pound and a small skimmer for 24-04 so i got what i deserved today NOTHING.

John should of battered me today but again he struggled and opted to catch silvers whilst he could not catch carp so at least he was putting fish in to the net, and towards the end of the match he also caught 4 carp but they went 28lb and he even lost a couple so i think he deserved his point today but don’t tell him i said this it will be our secret.

The score between me and John stands at.

Rolfslake Night Match 10th June 2011.

Rolfslake switches on big time for the night anglers in the second night match of the year.

Tonights hosts, Rolfslake's owners John and Pauline Bennett.

As the anglers arrived for the second of the Rolfslake’s night match they were greeted with rain and the end of a corporate match that had been held earlier in the day which was won with a weight of 90lb from peg 18 with waggler fished shallow.

As there were only 9 anglers tonight i and John Hague were tasked with sorting the pegs and decided to give all the anglers a bit of space so we used both the big and small lake.

As the match started at 8.30pm the lake was a mass of bubbles as the carp were feeding on the fly hatch on the water down the bottom of the big lake, but the fish were not not going mad in the first hour and at 9.30 John fired up the generator and turned the lights which drew complaints from the angler on the motorway bank as the 1000 watt lights blinded them for a while. Most anglers in the second hour started catching from all areas of the lake as it started raining again and a breeze blew from the big to the small lake which helped put the fish down.

The winner today was returning angler Simon Enticott who was fishing motorway bank peg 16 and was one of the anglers affected by the blinding lights from my peg 23 which was hampering him to see his float in the second and third hour. A change of fishing position from a 10 metre line out in front to fishing just past the bush pushed Simons catch rate up and in the end he could not catch the fish fast enough. Simon was using a combination of corn and paste to catch his fish and even had a pair of 19lb commons in his board weight of 189-00 and after 5 hours put a fantastic 335-08 for a match win {well done Simon }.

In second place for a change was me Eddie and after the first hour with 7 carp in the net i was really flying and at the rate i was catching i was seriously expecting to get close to my PB of 328-00 but a poor last hour ruined that idea. I was fishing my favourite X4 paste mix 2011 and i started off feeding the two bush swims to my right and left and started on the 8 metre line straight out, and was amazed at the amount of really good bites i was getting even with the swim a mass of bubbles. After the fourth hour i had over 200lb but that last hour cost me dear as i only put 4 fish in the net but still ended up with 249-12 with fish to 17-08.

Completing the frame was  John Bennett on form peg 7 and with peg 8 not in he had way too many options to fish so he started on the tip and caught a couple fish quickly but with John being one of Rolfslake’s top anglers found a spot to his left towards peg 8 at a range of 4 metres and started to bag on big carp {his board weight went 169-00} and by feeding heavy and fishing big 11mm donkey choker pellets John was able to keep the fish coming but after 5 hours fell just a silver nets worth of fish short of second {John put his silvers back} with his weight of 234-08.

Spare a thought for John as he fished tonights match in two types of pain the first was a really painful hip that made sitting and standing for any period of time really difficult, and the second was after the weigh-in when he was told he had been beaten by me as he got a real ear bashing { how sad }.

The Pirate flag flys again as i gain back another point.

As the battle between me and John continues it will only push us both to catch bigger and bigger weights as i am sure John thought he had tonights match  in the bag as when the whistle sounded he shouted to me “you have given me a right thrashing tonight Eddie” knowing he had over 200lb in the net.

When i got around to weigh Johns fish i looked at his board weight of 165lb and though you crafty old man or words to that effect, and when we weighed his net carp it went 234-08 and when i asked for his silver net he told me he had put them back. On walking round to my peg i could see a smug look on his face thinking he had beaten me but when i got round to my peg and added my board i was surprised to find out that it added to 145-00 and thought i might have a chance and after weighing my three nets was well chuffed to see my weight of 249-12 and another point gained back.

Rolfslake Wednesday Open 1st June 2011

A close battle for first place in todays midweek match.

Today the anglers were hoping for the good weights that had been caught by the Matchfishingscene anglers in their three day festival to continue in todays match. The weather was warm to start with turning colder as the evening drew in , but the anglers drew their pegs and went off happy nonetheless.

I could not believe the drawing ability of some of the regulars as Jon Walker fresh from his big weight on Monday was on peg 9, with John Bennett on peg 4 and Phil Powell on peg 32 so to frame in todays match you were going to either be lucky or fish your socks off. The story of todays match were the fish were blowing all around the lake but everyone was finding fish hard to come by except Phil Powell on peg 32 who by fishing shallow was managing to keep a few fish coming but everyone else was struggling and with John Bennett on end peg 4 he was out of sight so no one could tell what he was up to.

In first place today in a very tight frame was Big weight angler Jon Walker on peg 9 on the motorway bank. Jon after a very slow start with no action from the bush to his right saw that Phil Powell on peg 32 was catching shallow at 16 metres and decided to fish shallow himself and was rewarded with fish to 18-04 by fishing banded pellet and meat and feeding pellet, and after 5 hours managed to keep himself one fish in front of the chasing pack with his weight of 144-00 {well done Jon}.

In second place was lake owner John Bennett in the corner of the small lake on peg 4 and after his disaster on peg 4 two weeks ago made no mistake today. John fished 6 metres out in front and long down the edge 11 metres to his right. John fed heavy and used a big 11 banded pellet to catch fish to 17lb in his weight of 133-12 and one fish off a match win.

Completing the frame was Phil Powell who after his strong start to the match found that after Jon  started fishing shallow his fish were spread between the two and his catch rate dropped and with his edge swim not producing could not keep ahead of Jon and in the end also fell one good fish short of a match win.

The pirate and his first mate Geoff take a beating from Bennet today crossing his hand with two shinny pound coins.

Today i drew peg 28 against Johns peg 4 and spent a frustrating 5 hours foul hooking fish and not being able to catch from the right hand bush until the last hour and then it was too late but at least i caught carp to 18-04 but still fell another point behind John.

Rolfslake Wednesday Open 25th May 2011.

Rolfslake comes back to form in this weeks midweek match.

Todays match was going to be larger than normall as there were a few of the Matchfishingscene website anglers practising for their three day match on Thursday, Friday and Saturday this week.

The weather today was sunny with a fairly strong wind blowing from the small to the big to the small lake and with the pleasure anglers all catching from the  car park bank signs were good that the fish were going to have a go. Today after a strong campaign i managed to get my way and have pegs 3 and 39 included in the draw as the lake was black with fish in this area so hopefully i would be lucky and get my favourite peg. As the anglers lined up at the draw and one by one drew their pegs i had not heard peg three called so could this be the day i thought that i showed John how good this peg was then for the bad news from Neil Riddy, Eddie peg 3 is still in the bag but so is peg 16 so you have a 50-50 chance of drawing it. As i put my hand in I usually dont draw the first peg my hand touches but today i did and after pulling the peg out i could not believe it when i opened my hand and saw peg 16 I was GUTTED much to the guys amusement.

Anyway the story of today was in the big lake the pleasure anglers were bagging on pegs 19 round to pegs 24 with most of them fishing the bomb to the middle fishing either boilies, meat or corn so thet were all happy ,and with the anglers on peg 18, 14 ,28 and 32 all enjoying action signs were good for a big weight today. In the small lake John told me that it was a slow start for most with plenty of fish being lost especially for Neil Riddy on peg 3 who lost over 20 fish fishing close to the bush in the corner but he was also catching a few so signs were good.

As the day got later and the sun went down the fish responded to the feed and there were plenty of big fish caught between 5 and 7 pm which is normally the way in these midweek matches.

In first place today was Mr 200lb aka Mark Newbold who was fishing peg 7 in the small lake next to John. Mark continued his good run of form at the lake by fishing straight out at between 7-9 metres fishing his favoured paste hookbait but unlike the rest of the anglers who feed heavy Mark has a cautious approach of feeding sparingly to only bring a few fish into the peg at a time which results in less lost fish.

Mark caught big fish to near 19lb ,in fact Mark had 3 18lb fish in a good run of doubles which resulted in his board weight being over 160lb ,and at the end of 5 hours caught 294-04 to win todays match and also claim the peg king for peg 7 {well done Mark }.

In second place was Paul Jay who has yet to draw a bad peg this year and today was no different as he pulled out peg 18 on the motorway bank in the big lake. Paul fished at a range of 10 metres feeding heavy but used his favourite 8mm banded and donkey choker 11mm pellet to catch fish to 16lb both out in front and down the edge ,but also lost lots of fish as i was sure he had over 200lb but in the end only had 184-00 but was well clear of third place.

Completing the frame was lake owner John Bennett who was fishing next to Mark on peg 6 in the small lake. John was not only struggling with catch fish early on but was also suffering from a bad back and neck having to turn around so much witnessing Marks big fish. John eventually got the fish lined up fishing down the slope towards peg 5 and by using big balls of paste hookbait caught fish to 19lb in his final weight of 146-12.

Spare a thought  for Mark who was well chuffed on winning todays match but when i informed him he was only 7lb off being king of the lake he went home a very sad angler.

Dont worry Mark there is always next week to be king of Rolfs.

Pirate ship sinks after hitting the Bennett iceberg.

As for my battle against John for a change we both had even pegs which was John on 6 and i was on 16 and my day started badly as when i was walking to my peg I fell down a hole carrying all my gear much to Paul’s amusement but not mine { but he did carry my gear to to peg 16 as i hurt my ankle thanks Paul }.

We both struggled to catch early on and lost lots of fish  but in the end the bites could not come fast enough but my winning run came to an end with John catching 146-12 to my 110-08 so gained another point in our seasons battle {well done John }.

The main bait today for most anglers was paste and i expect the weights to get even bigger as the next month goes by.

Now for something different.

Johns grandson Daniel recently visited Dreamlakes in France and spent a week targeting the massive carp and catfish that these four lakes hold, and he asked me to show five of the fish that he caught during his stay.

Dreamlakes in France.

Daniel with a catfish of 17-08

Daniels mirror carp of 25-05

Daniel with a common of 34-03

A grass carp of 28-00

Daniel with a fantastic common of 41-08

And finally.

A fantastic mirror of 46-08

As you can see Daniel had a fantastic week even though it fished quite hard, and as Rolfslake.com supports all fisheries we have added the website address if any of our visitors to our website would like to know more about this fantastic big fish fishery i will include the website address.

Boxmore Sports and Social Club Match 23rd May 2011.

Rolfslake switches on for Boxmore Sports and Social Club .

Today Rolfslake welcomed Boxmore sports and social club down to the lake for their regular annual visit and for a change the fish were willing to have a go. The weather today was sunny but very windy which it made difficult at times for the anglers who were fishing the pole.

The 16 anglers were spaced around both the small and big lake with the ones in the small lake having a bit of choice in choosing their pegs, and i was more than happy to see at long last that my favourite peg 3 was in today as it would show John what the anglers had been missing recently.

John tells me the story of today was that all of the anglers enjoyed carp action from all pegs with the lowest weight today was 50lb and there were plenty of big doubles caught with Stuart Twine on peg 32 having 11 doubles on the board before the weigh-in.

In first place today was Roy Miller who was on car park bank peg 26, and Roy started on the tip caught a few carp then switched to the waggler and caught a few more but when Roy switched to a short line his catching increased by using meat as hookbait feeding pellet . Roy managed to keep the fish coming and after 5 hours put 243-08 on the scales to win the match and claim the peg king off John Bennet { double well done Roy }.

In second place was Richard Furham fishing motorway bank peg 16, and Richard managed to catch fishing mainly the bush to his left and he also caught fish to double figures in his weight of 174-02 and continued the run of frames this peg has produced recently.

Completing the frame was Ken Smith who was fishing yesterdays winning peg 18 and John tells me that Ken caught most of his fish fishing down the edge to his left both long and short to record his weight of 170-08 and the second big weight off this peg this weekend.

But what of PEG 3 i hear you ask.

Well today it had Del Smith fishing it and after catching his first small fish of 20lb off it the peg got stronger as the match went and in the end Del recorded 166-12 to prove my point that the corners do hold plenty of fish on them {well done Del}.

Ps Del also claimed the peg king for peg 3.
