Rolfslake Saturday 14th April 2012

First i would like to thank Paul Corsini for giving lake owner John Bennett a new toy to play with in the shape of a megafone complete with a siren, which was tested on me on my arrival at the lake. As i got out of my car the one person that i had not seen by the hut was John and i now know why because he was hiding in the bushes ready to shout my name much to the amusement of the rest of the anglers.

Today was quite mild but with a breeze blowing from the small lake to the big lake so there was not as many crusing carp to spot as there have been and with such a late decision to hold an open the 10 anglers decided that todays match was going to be a walk off so a low draw was going to be essential. As the draw was called for a change i decided to draw second and as i opened my hand was dissapointed to see number 7 , my main challenge was John and with a big smile on his face could only mean one thing that he had drawn would you believe number 1.

John decided to draw peg 32 by the hut as it had shown some form of late but was more interested where I was going to fish and as i had said the big lake the rest of the anglers also followed suit but when it was my turn changed my mind and chose peg 6 in the small lake to see if I could do better than my last match on peg 6. The story of the match was for most anglers it turned out to be a struggle as the wind and the tow caused presentation problems if you fished longer than 5 metres and as it got colder towards the end of the match the bites dried up for most of the anglers.

In first place today was me Eddie Tayor-Green who was fishing in the small lake on my favourite peg 6 but it was very cold and not far enough away from the megafone as i kept hearing from John everytime I hooked a carp and that was quite a few times today. I was trying a variation to my X4 paste mix which I think is now complete to use in cold and warm water conditions as every bite I had today resulted in the float sailing away every time and in some cases the pole was pulled around. I fished two areas a 12 metre line straight out facing peg 36 and a long margin line towards peg 5 and caught fish to 16-08 in my final weight of 102-08 { well done Eddie}.

Another win for the Pirate.

In second place was Paul Jay who you guessed it was on peg 18 again , so it now only takes him 5 minutes to set up as all his rigs are already plumbed up and ready to go. Paul today managed to catch a few on the waggler and the rest on the pole and like me had fish to mid doubles caught on 8mm banded pellet fished on the deck for his weight of 88-12, which maintained his good run of frames recently.

Second place Paul Jay.

In third place was my website partner in crime Simon Mound who tells me he started on the bomb and ended fishing the pole using 11mm banded donkey choker pellet feeding 4mm pellet which caught fish to over 18lb ,but the wind and tow in this area played havoc with Simons float presentation but he still managed to get a few carp to feed and after 5 hours put a hard earned 73-04 on the scales to complete a first and third for the bloggers.

Rolfslake Wednesday Open 11th April 2011.

The Crocodile makes his third appearance in a week.

After the three day Easter festival that was won by Mark Maylin, the anglers were hoping that with fewer anglers on the lake today that the carp would have a proper feed . With a frost the previous two mornings thing were only going to get worse for the unlucky 13 as John tells me that it started sunny and warm turning windy and then all hell broke loose as there was thunder and hailstones so just another day down the lake.

In first place today was Paul Jay who we now think is from another planet as no human could draw the amount of flyers as he does, as today he drew peg 18 on the motorway bank with the wind blowing into his corner with fish topping. John tells me that Paul caught on the waggler and pole fishing banded pellet and caught carp to double figures for his final weight of 129-00 {well done Paul }.

In second place a having a good run was Dai Thomas who had drawn opposite to Paul on peg 22 on the carp park bank, and after catching his first carp at 21-04 went on to putting a good bag of carp together on what John believes was pole fished with pellet hookbait fished on the deck for his final weight and second ton of the day with 107-00. Completing the frame was lake owner John Bennett who was on iffy peg 8, and after failing to find any of Mark Newbolds tackle from last week told me that after a slow start he tried fishing 16 metres across with little success. On feeding a few more pellets at 16 metres he saw some fish swirling so he baited with a 11mm donkey choker pellet shipped out and as soon as the float settled it shot away, thinking it was a carp got ready to land it only to find the pet crocodile or pike looking up at him. The pike was the same one that Clive and Chris had caught last week as it had the same markings but this time weighed in at 13-08 but John also had a 4-08 chub to go eventually with some carp in his weight of 68-04 and a rather mixed bag for John.

Rolfslake Wednesady Open 28th March 2010

The king of the lake falls for the second time in 3 Days.

With the start of the Wednesday bagging series as the draw is now 1pm fishing 2-7 which saw a good turn out of 18 anglers hoping to catch a net full of fish in todays match.

The weather was sunny and warm and there were loads of carp cruising around the big lake ,so a draw from pegs 14 round to 26 were going to give you a chance of a big weight and as the draw was called there was a rush to get first in the queue except me who always draws last. Andy Quarmby the first angler to catch 200lb from the lake last weekend had drawn peg 14 , Mark Newbold had drawn peg 18 and Paul Jay had drawn peg peg 34 so there was no change in the same anglers drawing the same flyers and also their pegs were solid with fish how depressing.

At least John had drawn peg 23 so it was going to be a quiet match for me as he was out of shouting range as I was on peg 9 and I had Neil Riddy for company on peg 8 and Andy Rayment on 32 so at least pleasant company for 5 hours with no abuse so happy days for a change. The story of the match was the anglers on the car park bank pegs 14 to 18 were into fish straight away with the anglers in the small lake struggling to catch many fish as it was very bright in this area causing a problem to seeing their floats and as the match went on the fishing just got better and better for most of the anglers as it normally does on a Wednesday.

The winner of todays match was Rolfslakes inform angler Andy Quarmby who was on form peg 14 on the motorway bank and just to show how many fish there were in this peg Andy managed to hook a fish within 5 seconds of the all in being called. Andy today started off fishing really shallow on the pole plonking the bait in front of the fish who were very happy to feed and Andy had managed to catch 8 carp in the first 20 minutes so a big weight was on the cards. Andy was fishing 8 to 10mm banded pellet on the hook fish fishing shallow which gave him 200lb in the first three hours, but a fishless fourth hour slowed him down and he swithched to a 5 metre line for the last hour fishing big banded pellet which picked up his catch rate and after 5 hours caught a fantastic 341-04 to still be king of the lake {well done Andy}.

In second place and hot on the heels of Andy was Mark Newbold 4 pegs away on peg 18 and like Andy was fishing shallow using pellet hook bait which caught him plenty of carp to double figures, in fact Mark had 199lb of fish on the board before weighing his fish in the nets. A switch to fishing the bush to his right again using pellet  but this time fishing on the deck kept the fish coming but in the end he fell just short of the 300lb barrier with his very good weight of 287-00.

Completing the frame and keeping very quiet today was lake owner John Bennett who after half an hour was seen walking around the lake as he was unhappy with his draw of peg 23, but 5 hour later he was smiling like a cheshire cat as not only had he framed but had beaten me in the process. John fished a two metre line to the bush to his left using both banded pellet and meat hook bait and feeding pellet, and the fish were happy to come close to the bank even the big ones as he managed to catch an Ollie { a carp of 18-08 the same weight as his dog ] and many other doubles in his final weight of 171-08.

The Pirate Sunk by HMS Bennett .

 Report to follow.

With the later starts in both the Monday and Wednesday opens I expect the weights to get bigger and bigger and also the attendances, so if you fancy a chance of a big match weight and the possibilty of a 20lb carp and good company then get down to one of these opens you wont regret it.

Rolfslake Saturday Open 24th March 2012

The fish start to feed getting ready for the Easter Festival.

After a lay off from fishing for the last 7 weeks due to injuring my wrist, i was warmly greeted by the anglers down the lake and they were all hoping for a great days fishing as was warm with the sun shining.

We agreed that todays match was going to bedy, a walk off and that we could use both the big and small lake so with Pete Arnold drawing number one he went off to fish peg 8 in the gap  then the next four went in the big lake and the next four opted for the small lake me being one of them {but not my favoured peg 3 this time ].

As I had chosen peg 39 today I could believe my eyes as there must of been 200 carp cruising between 39 and 40 and that was going to be my main problem today but not for the anglers in the big lake as the fish were in the middle between pegs 14 round to 28 so they were not on top of them.

The story of todays match was with the sun shining the carp did not like the pole fished above their heads so for two of the top 3 today it was waggler fished in the middle pinging small amounts of pellets and for the other in the top three it was close range fishing to assemble the three ton weights in the match.

In first place today was lake regular Andy Rayment who was fishing on the motorway bank peg 16 and after seeing all the carp on the surface decided to fish the waggler at a depth of about two feet using banded 8mm hard pellet. Andy had to continually cast to the fish if he had not had a bite after 30 seconds and Neil told me that Andy was casting to the areator which I replied that was good then he told me that the areator was tied to the bank on peg 24 [ top casting Andy} and after a busy 5 hours Andy weighed in 166-00 for peg king but no king of the lake.

Hot on Andys heels was Pete Arnold fishing peg 8 in the gap, and Pete had a nice days fishing catching carp skimmers and chub from the bush to his left using pellet hook bait and feeding pellet. Pete also like Andy had big fish to double figures and it was great to see peg 8 come back to form as the previous top weight had only been 35lb or so, and at the end Pete fell only two fish short of the win with his weight of 146-08.

Completing the frame was Neil Riddy who after watching Andy catching up in the water followed suit by fishing the waggler but this time fishing at a depth of a foot and a half and using 6mm banded hard pellet but was always playing catch up but also caught fish to double figures in his weight of 114-00.

John and the Pirate share the spoils in todays match.

As for my battle against John it was not a lot to report as we both struggled to get a bite from the carp and at the end settled for an tied match with our 4lb weight of silvers which is not what I was expecting on my return to fishing.

The score so far stands at:

JOHN 4

EDDIE 1

Just a reminder to all the anglers that soon we will be in club match season down the lake with very few opportunities to fish on  a Saturday and Sundays so your best chances of a good days fishing and a laugh with the guys will be on the Wednesdays, and now the clocks have gone forwards the draw time is 1 O’clock fish 2 to 7 so if you want a chance of a big weight get down to one of these matches.

Rolfslake Wednesday Open 14th March 2012

John tells me there was a good attendance of 13 anglers on the match and 4 pleasure anglers down the lake today. The weather was cold with a breezy wind making the fishing harder than it was yesterday although the silvers were happy to feed and there was a massive shoal of carp hiding down the bottom end of the small lake.

Hopefully the later draw time will start to boost the attendances in these midweek matches and with the Easter Festival only a few weeks away i am sure there will be a few of these anglers coming down for a practise and with the weather now a little more settled than last month hopefully the carp will now start to feed a little better than they have recently.

Rolfslake Saturday 25th February 2012

After the tough midweek open won By Geoff Edwards the anglers today were greeted by two things, the sun and a lake full of cruising fish to raise the hopes of a good days fishing. I can only asume todays match was a walk off as both pegs 20 and 3 were included and under normal conditions and with me absent from the lake these pegs would never be included.

John tells me the story of the match was that today was a sunny and fairly warm day with a cool breeze blowing across the lake which saw the small lake black with fish but they were not interested in feeding but chasing each other around. It was a similar story in the big lake but the anglers did manage to catch a few carp early so thing were already better than Wednesday. The good thing about today is that the silvers were still happy to feed in numbers with Steve Waters managing to catch over 20lb of silvers to go with his carp, and John also told me that there were a few carp lost but there were still many bites to be had which is good news.

In first place today was lake owner John Bennett who when I phoned him after 2 hours he told me he was struggling like he does even if he is bagging, but was struggling to get bites fishing his long line but after changing to start a new swim began catching again and during this period he managed to  catch 3 carp for 42lb to boost his weight. John was today fishing on the deck at about 14 metres using corn and soft pellet for hoobait feeding micro pellet and caught 8 carp for 79-00 for yet another win { well done John }.

Todays winner John Bennett.

In second place today was an angler missing for a while Ernie Malyon who was fishing peg 23 on the motorway bank and Ernie fished both the waggler and pole to catch his carp and today was using maggots as hookbait and after 5 hours put a hard earned 65-04 on the scales to just keep ahead of the chasing pack. Very close in third was John Draper who was fishing in the small lake on peg 34 and John in the end fell just one small roach from second place with 65-00 and today any of the top three weights would of won the midweek match.

Get well soon Phil and we hope to see you soon.

Tomorrow Rolfslake welcome Royal Oak angling club so we hope all the anglers have a great day.

John has already had 12 names for the Easter Festival and has asked the anglers who fished last year if they would like to fish they must contact him asap if they would like to fish this year. John has limited the event to 27 places to enable the anglers to have a bit of space on the lake, and this popular event usually is well attended and by the time Easter comes around the fishing should at full swing so to not miss out give John a call to confirm your place.
