Rolfslake Saturday Open 25th August 2012

Today saw the first of three bank holiday weekend opens but the sun from earlier in the week today turned to thundery showers then getting sunny and warm then back to rain.

John tells me that today 14 anglers turned up hoping for two things a draw in the big lake and hopefully having your peg drawn after the match as golden peg as ther was £100 on offer very kindly donated by John. The fishing continued on from Wednesdays match where the small lake fished very hard with anglers only catching a few carp and John thinks this was due to very little wind blowing on the lake.

Todays match was won on form peg 16 and the angler lucky enough to draw this peg was Gary Kelsey and Gary fished a short line of 5 metres fished on the deck using meat and paste feeding pellet catching fish to double figures in his weight of 183-12 { well done Gary ]. The next two in the frame Andy Quarmby and Simon Mound were pegged next to each other on the car park bank on pegs 30 and 32 and after 5 hours were seperated by 4 fish with Andy coming second with 143-12 to Simons 104-09.

Rolfslake night match 17th August 2012

Miracle man continues his good run of results down the lake.

Tonight 16 anglers returned to Rolfslake for the 6th night match down the lake and all the usual suspects were in attendance, and as usual they managed to draw all the flyers leaving the rest of the anglers to play catch up.

With the weather today being sunny, warm with very little wind to cool the anglers the all in was called at 8pm and what was evident tonight was a slow start for the anglers in the big lake but the anglers in the small lake were having better luck with Wez on 38 Simon on little used peg 3, Matt Edwards on peg 4 getting regular action but for the rest it was a struggle which is a surprise for there were lots of fish cruising whilst it was light. At 10pm John turned the lights on and the anglers in the big lake started to catch short as the fish came closer in.

The winner of tonights match was Miracle sponsored angler Matt Edwards who was fishing peg 4 down the bottom of the small lake and Matt was having a peg to peg battle with Simon Mound on peg 3 and also seeing who could lose the most foul hooked fish in the night .

Tonights winner Matt Edwards.

I believe Matt was fishing a line down the right edge and a line out in front using pellet hookbait feeding pellet catching fish to double figures but not as many as you would usually catch from this peg but after a hard fished five hours put 134-03 for another win down the lake. Hot on his heels was Rolfslake’s form angler Simon Mound who was fishing on peg 3  { my second favourite peg on th lake } and Simon had a very frustrating first half of the match as he was playing tug of war with the carp from the left hand bush but a change to fishing a 5 metre line straight out using pellet feeding pellet brought him a good run of fish to double figures and a few smaller carp for his weight of 104-13 and 4 carp off the match win which was within his reach as he lost 22 carp tonight.

Completing the frame was Paul Jay on would you believe it peg 8 so for the first time in months his tackle had to be moved from peg 18 and a new rig had to be made. Paul fished two lines the bush to his left and a straight out line down the track and Paul caught carp and silvers fishing his 8mm banded pellet for his weight of 85-06.

A side story to Pauls match was on hooking a carp his hook pulled and his float got stuck in the bush so Paul grabbed his elastic and started to pull which you should never do and was rewarded with his float being released from the bush straight into his hand. His second mistake was using a Walker float as they are quality made and dont break so went in quite far and looking for some help asked Dave on peg 7 for some help , and i think Paul was expecting Dave to count down from three but Dave grabbed the float and pulled it straight out { not very clever Paul and very dangerous }.

McMillans Cancer Charity Fund Raiser 20th July.

McMillan Cancer charity fund raising day.

The Pro’s and the McMillan charity team.

Today Rolfslake hosted a charity fund raising day in aid of the McMillan cancer support charity. In the proceeding days John, Dai and Paul Jay had been working flat out preparing the lake and sorting out the car parking that neighbour farm John had kindly agreed to let John use the next field for the visitors.

The match was going to be two 2 and a half hour matches with a 5 minute pre baiting period just before the second part of the match, and as if by special request the anglers down the lake were greeting with a warm day with very little wind which does not go hand in hand with big catches. John very kindly passed on his lake fee to the charity with the rest to be raised from the daily fees from the anglers plus sales of burgers and finished with a raffle with prizes very kindly donated by Kamasan and Daiwa and Drennan so hopefully this would help bolster the fund raising.

The match today was going to be 12 Pro /lake regular anglers to be paired with non regulars with the match being decided on section points and weight and at 12.30 the all in was called and never has the lake been devoid of banter as the anglers settled down to really concentrate on their fishing. Today it was a pleasure to have some of the Pro anglers that had given up their time to fish and give the anglers a chance of beating a real star { that was the plan at least}.

John tells me that the story of the match was it was a slow start with the anglers hooking and losing some big carp and even some smaller carp that just refused to be landed but as he match progressed they sorted this out and started to put fish in the net. One of the top performances was Ian McCulloch on little used prg 36 in the small lake who was not only putting the third biggest weight together but also claiming the peg king for 36 { well done Ian }. The main individual battle was between Super star angler Steve Ringer and Rolfslake resident and form angler Dai Thomas who were both pegged on the car park bank Steve on 32 and Dai on 22 and after the 5 hours Dai ended up in first place with 145-01 one carp ahead of Steve who caught 130-12 but at  least it was fun to see Steve battling the big powerful carp of Rolfslake { Dai revel in glory as a victory against Steve is a rare thing and he tells John HE WILL BE BACK }.

Top overall Rolfslake’s resident Dai Thomas { well done Dai }.

Steve Ringer hanging on.

On the team front Steve Ringer did get his revenge as he was paired with Karl on peg 9 straight opposite and between them they caught 172-12 for 7 points and victory { well done guys }.

We would also like to say a massive thanks to Dave Ridgley and Ben Banham from Experience Fishing in Newbury for their great donation of two new sets of Ruben Heaton digital scales and a weigh tripod which will be a great help when weighing the big weights down the lake.

McMillans Charity fund raiser down the lake Friday 20th July.

Just a reminder to all our vistors to Rolfslake.com that there will be a charity fund raiser down the lake tomorrow and everyone is welcome to come down and watch a selection of star anglers and regulars and first timers who will be raising money for the McMillan cancer support charity.

Firstly a massive thanks to the regulars who have pledged money so far it is much appreciated and i believe there will be 2 two and a half hour matches with a break in the middle where there will be a barbeque with the money raised also going towards the total.

There will also be a raffle with tackle prizes on the day so all the visitors have a chance to win a prize so even more reasons to come on down.

A note to all competitors please use the lake main entrance and to all spectators please use the entrance before the lake which will be signposted and there will be someone on the gate but please drive slowly.

Entrance for spectators will be £1 and if you would like to see anglers of the caliber of Steve Ringer, Steve Mayo and Martin Greene etc i am sure it will be a great day as it is due to be a nice day.

A massive thanks to Dai Thomas ,Paul Jay and John Bennett who have been working flat out getting the lake ready for tomorrow and it looked fantastic when i was here this evening.

To all have a fantastic days fishing.
