On the 20th of July Rolfslake is hosting a Charity match in support of the Macmillan Cancer Support.
Today Rolfslake welcomed Cove A.C down to the lake and John tells me that on a humid day with the wind changing in direction from Saturday and today blowing into the big lake towards pegs 19 and 20 and with it the blossom that was lying on the lake was drawing the fish in this direction as they were trying to eat it so the end pegs 16 and 26 were the place to be.
In first place today was Maurice Woodley who was drawn on peg 16 and today Maurice made the most of his draw catching fish to double figures in his weight of 243-08 to be nearly 100lb in front of second place. In second place was lake regular Mick Chappell who drew the other end peg { peg 26 } and again caught his share of double figure fish in his weight of 154-12.

Just a bit of rain during tonights match.
Tonight saw the third night match of the year down the lake and the thirteen brave anglers had to endure a flooded road down in the town and rain during the match after the cloud burst of rain earlier in the day. With a rising lake making life difficult for the anglers tonight, you wanted a draw on the carpark bank around the junction of the big and small lake as most of the carp seemed to want to feed in this area.
In first place tonight was Middy sponsored angler Andy Quarmby who tonight completed his second victory in his second night match and tonight was fishing form peg 9 on the motorway bank. John tells me that Andy fished a short 6 metre line fished on the deck using pellet hookbait. With the chasing pack keeping up with Andy it required fish to double figures to keep him ahead and after a tough 5 hours Andy put a very good 256-08 to seal yet another victory { well done Andy }.
In second place was Paul Jay two pegs down on peg 7 who kept up with Andy but in the end fell 3 carp behind but still recorded another good weight of 232-04 to keep his good form going. Completing the frame was Mick Jones who again was fishing his favourite peg 10 { Mick has drawn this peg just a few times } and again had big fish to double figures in his weight of 178-08.

Another tight frame in the third night match.
As i arrived at the lake again late with only 20 minutes before the draw ,the one thing i could not believe was the stick i was taking and i had not even got out of the car {thanks John }. Tonight there were 12 anglers hoping that the big weights were going to return as there were lots of carp cruising on the top feeding on the fly hatch rising from the bottom so the signs were good.
As draw was called the anglers made an orderly queue hoping for a good draw on the motorway bank as the wind had picked up and the lucky anglers on this side were Mick,Dai, Geoff, John, Ernie and the resident Paul Jay who had amazingly drawn peg 18 for the 15th time this year so he had to first read his mail that is now delivered there and pull out his rigs that are already plumbed for this peg.
The story of the match was that it was a slow start the light were turned on at 9.45 and as it got dark the fishing got better as the fish not only got closer in they fed down in the water with quite a few bream caught tonight topped by Kev Doulton’s 41lb of them and he could of possibly broke the silver fish record if those pesky carp had not moved in.
The results toight were decided on two sections and the winner of A section was Rolfslake’s inform angler Dai Thomas on peg 10 and Dai tonight concentrated on the left hand edge swim just short of the keepnet about a metre from the bank and by using banded pellet managed to keep the carp coming again catching fish to double figures in his weight his weight of 97-12 and again just missed the magical ton.
In second p[ace was Geoff Edwards on peg 13 and from where i could see Geoff was fishing two lines ,a short 7 metre line straight out in front and a long edge line down to his right . Geoff caught fish to double figures in his weight of 88-08 .
The winner of B section was Paul Jay on peg 18 and Paul caught a mixed bag of bream and carp by fishing down the left hand margin using 8mm banded pellet hookbait but still managed to lose a few fish that were foul hooked. In second place was Kev Doulton who is one of a possible two anglers to be the first angler to catch the first 100lb silver weight ever down at Rolfslake.
Kevin who was struggling to catch carp switched to catching bream and was rewarded with 41lb of them until the carp moved in and messed up his bream peg. Kevin if i was listening correctly was using worm and caster fishing down to his right along the bush and was kept busy and in the end caught 2 small carp to go with his bream for 53-08.

The only time it is not bad to come 2nd last.
As for my battle against lake owner John Bennett tonight i saw a collection of dirty tricks never seen before down the lake. The first was letting Oliver his dog bark for the first hour of the match disturbing my concentration, the second was i was unaware that the spare lights on pegs 14,16, 22 and 26 were aimed at me and when the lights came on it was like looking into the sun as I could not see as i was blinded. The third and final trick of the night was when i eventually hooked my first carp in the dark John turned his new head torch to full power and my god it was so bright it was like looking into a car head light at full beam { cheers John }.
John Tonight was on peg 14 and was stuggling to get any bites and in the end reverted to the tip and managed to catch 2 small carp and in the end caught one carp and one small fishing the pole on a short line fishing banded pellet.
As for me a more frustrating night i will never have again as my short 5 metre line was just a mass of bubbles with not a clean bite to be had which made me fish longer than i was expecting 10 metres which was just at the maximum range i could see in the dark. I managed to catch also 3 carp and 1 bream and as John was to weigh first his 4 fish went 20-04 and when it was my turn he wanted the scales re-checked of which i was not very happy at and in the end my four fish went 25-04 to pull back another point in our season battle.
Just as a side note i am now undefeated against John in the night matches for the last year so i had better eat a few more carrots.
The score between me and John now stands at.
John 7
Eddie 3

All aboard the 1st night match of the year.
The eagerly awaited night matches finally arrived to Rolffslake this week and the first to try this out was Malc Doyle and his Jinx League anglers with a special invite to both Paul Jay and myself { thanks Malc }.
On my arrival at home i phoned my co web partner Simon to find out what time the draw was, only to be told it was a rolling draw for the anglers that had turned early with a match start time of 7pm great i thought as it was 6.15 and i had only just got home. A quick change and loading of the car saw me drive the 20 miles and arrive at the lake for 6.50 and was greeted by Neil Riddy who gave me the good news that peg 7 had been drawn for me and that i had only 10 minutes to set up { who said fishing was relaxing}.
It was great to see the Jinx League anglers again as they are a great bunch of ladies and gents and there is always plenty of banter and one pound side bets going on all around the lake with a chance to beat the lake regulars to boot. The one person who was suprised to see me was lake owner John Bennett and as soon as he saw me he wanted to fish but sadly all the pegs had gone { how sad } so he could not add to his 7-2 lead against me. As the start was called i got my regular stick from John on the megafone even though i was not even ready. Within 2 minutes Dave Moore on peg 6 was already in to a fish and after 10 had caught 2 carp so i was already playing catch up. From where i could see the anglers on the car park bank { Paul, Simon, Malc and Mat } were catching fish and also Paul on peg 34 was catching carp even with his catch and release policy as when he went to put a carp in his net missed it and carp went straight back into the lake.
As for me on peg 7 and Nick on peg 8 the blustery wind made it a challenge to present the rigs properly with plenty of hooked and lost carp making for a frustrating first couple of hours where as the rest of the lake looked quite calm by comparison. At about 9.30 John fired up the generators and the lights were turned on which is what makes these matches quite special as when it gets dark the fishing gets better and the noise from the motorway gets quieter which makes for a nice change.
The winner tonight was my web partner Simon Mound who was fishing carpark bank peg 28 and after a slowish start managed to get the carp lined up fishing a short line down the slope fishing on the deck. Simon was using 8mm hard banded pellet feeding pellet to catch his carp which went up to 19lb { his board weight alone went 115lb } which is great fun playing these big fish in the dark, and after 5 hours put an action packed 175-08 for another win {well done Simon}.
In second place was Miracle sponsored Mat Edwards who was also on the car park bank this time end peg 22 and by also using Miracle Baits products Mat managed to catch fish to 16-04 in his final weight of 121-00 and continued his good for down the lake. Completing the frame was Terry Goff who also found out how deep peg 4 was as he fell in early but he still managed to catch a mixed bag of bream and carp using pellet hookbait feeding pellet for the third ton of the day with 103-12 and just ahead of Dave Moore by 2-04.
One of the highlights of this match was the 20lb carp caught by Malc Doyle on peg 24.
