Cove AC club match Sunday 9th September 2012.

Somethings never change down the lake.

Today Rolfslake welcomed Cove AC down to the lake and the club also invited some of the lake regulars to make up the numbers ,but sometimes this becomes risky as local knowledge gives the anglers a head start. Today would also see the last of the warm and sunny weather as the future forcasts for next week predict heavy rain for most of the week so today could be the last chance of a big weight.

On phoning John with an hour to go he told me he was struggling with 5 fish from peg 6 but the anglers on pegs 40 and 2 were bagging as they have been on these pegs for the last 3 days so big weights were on the cards. The anglers also in the big lake were doing a little better of lake as the breeze blowing down into the small lake had died down and was now blowing fom peg 30 to 19 spreading the fish around so hopefully there would be some good weights to be had.

Simon continues to rake in the match wins.

In first place today and continuing his hot streak was Simon Mound on my most hated peg 14 on the motorway bank and Simon continued his feed for one fish at a time policy which cuts out foulhooked fish resulting in his big weights of late. Simon started off shallow catching a few carp early and also 6lb of roach but when he decided to swap to fishing down the edge his swim went fish crazy. Simon fished both sides of his margin swims both to the bush on his right up and down the ledge and towards peg 15’s platform, and was rewarded with big fish to mid doible figures feeding pellet fishing banded 8mm pellets on the hook and after 5 hours put one of the top weights off this peg with 229-01 { well done Simon}.

In second place was Cove angler Maurice Woodley who was on Fridays winning peg , peg 40 and Maurice again had a good run of big fish to double figures in his weight of 171-10 with Stuart Yeomans only two fish behind with 155-09 from peg 8.

Just as a foot note John, Simon and me Eddie would like to thank all our visitors to Rolfslake.com as we have been up and running for 3 years now with this last year being our most successful with over 60,000 visits and around 1000 friends on our facebook page.

Rolfslake has now become a regular venue for magazine articles, National semi finals and a venue for both bait and tackle testing and this is due to the hard work that both John and Pauline and the fisheries team put in to ensure that the fish are in tip top condition and the fishery a lovely place to be at.

Private Match Friday 6th September 2012.

Super Si shreds the opposition.

Today Rolfslake welcomed Gary Horne and friends down to the lake for one of their annual visit and as usual this match was well attended. John tells me that the weather was warm with a breeze blowing into the small lake where the winner of Thursdays match came from peg 2 with 180lb followed by peg 40.

The story of the match was the fish were mostly feeding in the small lake today with many anglers experiencing foul hooked fish through feeding too heavy where the current trend tends to be to feed for one fish at a time as too many in your peg cause to many line bites and false indications.

The winner today and on an incredible run was Rolfslake’s co website owner Simon Mound who today let all the other anglers draw first so he could not be acccused of being a drawbag and in the bag was peg 40 where the fish had gathered over the last few days. Now for the those anglers out there that think that Simon draws all the flyers they would be wrong as Simon has won matches this year from all areas around the lake and also with big weights on what are very simple methods and normal baits.

Today Simon made it three wins in a row from peg 40 at the bottom of the small lake and Simon just concentrated on two areas the platform of peg 39 at 13 metres where he caught some fish but when he turned around to fish the outer leg of the platform on peg 1 at the bottom of the slope the fish where there ready and waiting, and Simon caught his ususal run of fish to double figures in what was not only a great weight for this peg with his final weight of 196-05 he also took Mick Jones peg king off him which lasted all of three days { very well done Simon }. At this moment Simon is unbeatable down the lake and i would not be surprised to see another victory as he is fishing a club match on Sunday as well.

In second place was Nick Horne right at the other of the big lake on peg 22 who put together another ton weight of 136-10 and in third place was Alan Stokes on peg 30 who also caught another good weight and just ahead of fourth with his weight of 109-05 { sorry Nick and Alan i dont have any details of your methods and baits }.

Can anyone beat inform Simon Mound.

Rolfslake Wednesday Open 5th September 2012

Pete makes it two in a row.

John tells me there were 12 anglers on todays open hoping for some of the good fishing that was had by the 4 semi finalists of the Drennan match fishing cup but as always Rolfslake had other ideas. The weather today was sunny with a breeze blowing into pegs 16 and 18 which made it a little cold for the anglers in this area as when i phoned John during the match he was on his way to getting his jumper , so sunny in one area and cold in the other.

The winner today was Pete Archer who made it a Wednesday win double as he won the last midweek open and today peg 9 kept him busy with a good run of fish to double figures for a final weight of 187-04 { well done Pete }. In hot pursuit was returning angler Adam Griffiths who was right opposite on peg 32 and Adam kept pace with Pete but in the end fell 3 carp behind with 161-09 and in third place was Pete Arnold on super peg 16 and again it produced another ton weight this time 144-12.

I will add moe to this report when i get more information from John tomorrow.

Rolfslake Wednesday Open 29th August 2012

Super peg 16 comes good again.

Today Rolfslake welcomed 3 of the 4 Drennan Knockout cup semi finalists which is due to be fished down the lake very soon which swelled the attendance for this match. The angler were greeted with rain at the draw during the match and at the end so a good set of waterproofs were the order of the day as it was relentless and also very cold or was it i was totaly soaked.

The story of the match was it was the usual slow start with a few fish being foul hooked and lost in the big lake and a few fish being landed in the small lake but i think a combination of rain, a stiff breeze and a full money put the fish off their normal feeding pattern so it was tough going for a few of the anglers today.

The winner today was lake regular Mick Jones who had drawn super 16 on the motorway bank the scene of last weekends capture of lake king by Simon Mound with 360-11 so Mick was very hopeful of a good days fishing and today was not disappointed. Mick started down the right hand edge but was plagued with silvers attacking his bait so after and an hour and a half adjusted both his rig and his fishing line to a 5 metre straight out line feeding pellet and then had the carp lined up. Mick caught fish to double figures which seem to hang around this peg and by using i am sure both meat and pellet hookbaits both fished on the deck it helped Mick amass his great weight of 168-00 on a difficult day {well done Mick }.

In a close battle for second saw Micheal Corsini { who has spent most of the school holidays down the lake } and Simon Wilsmore { Milo } where on pegs 13 and 24 in the big lake and Micheal just managed to sneak second due to his bigger weigher fish which gave him 138-06 to Simons 127-08 in what turned out to be a good practise session for Simon’s forthcoming semi final.

Rolfslake Bank Holiday Sunday Open 26th August 2012.

Super Si rocks the 400lb mark and takes the King of the lake.

Today saw the anglers turn up for the second match of the bank holiday weekend and hopefully an improvement to the fishing and a chance to win the £100 golden peg kindly donated by lake owner John Bennett. The match today was well attended with Rob Wooton one of the Drennan knockout cup semi finalists in attendance today trying to get an idea of the methods required at Rolfslake for the forthcoming semi finals being held down the lake.

After yesterdays poor showing in the small lake a good draw in the big lake was what was required and with a sunny day with a breeze on the lake the signs were looking good. John tells me the story of the day was the little lake fished hard again with most of the action coming font the center of the big lake with anglers still losing plenty of foul hooked fish but the top 9 anglers still weighing over a ton and for one angler today a magic weight was on the cards as he spent alot of time getting off his box to weigh fish.

That angler today was inform and probably Rolfslake’s most consistent angler of the year so far Simon Mound who today found himself back on favourite peg 16 on the motorway bank. Simon tells me that after catching a quick fish shallow  straight out in front he thinks in hindsight that was probably 20 minutes wasted trying to catch some more with no success and switched to a five metre line straight out in front and again caught one carp but no more .

It was then that Simon switched to the right hand margin down the silt bank the same area that gave him his last PB of 312lb a couple of weeks ago and from that point the carp were there ready and waiting. The key moment in Simons match was on playing a carp it got caught up on the snag that has lost many anglers fish, but this time the snag came up with fish and it was removed from the water together with the fish and from this moment the fishing just got better. Simon was today fishing banded 8mm pellet  feeding pellet through a kinder pot to get the fish lined up and Simon caught 19 fish to 19lb for a board weight of nearly 240lb to go together with his net fish. The rig was a straight forward 0.24 line fished with a Jon Walker diamond float finished with a 14 hook and Simon worked his rig to tempt the carp that were in his peg.

As the weigh-in commenced the anglers gathered to see if Simon had bettered his PB of 312lb and with his net fish taking 4 weighs the total of Simons efforts was a fantastic 360-11 for not only a new PB but he took the king of the lake title off John Walker { very well done Simon } and with those wasted 20 minutes at the start and the loss of 7 carp Simon would of got close to the world 5 hour match record set 7 years ago at Rolfslake of 490-08 .

In second place today was Rob Wooton who was on the car park bank peg 30 and the information that i have tells me that Rob fished at short range both on the deck and at mid depth fishing pellet to catch carp to double figures in his good weight of 188-04 and a good workout for his semi final coming up. Completing the frame was another king of the lake holder Geoff Edwards who defied the poor fishing in the small lake putting another good weight of fish to double figures on peg 7 of 151-09.

New King of the lake Simon Mound 360-11 { well done Simon }
