Rolfslake Open 17th February 2013.

King Kev cleans up on both pools today.

Today was another low attended match due to the continued cold weather and the reluctance of the carp to feed at the moment which will come to an end sooner or later. We decided to all fish the big lake on the car park bank as the motorway bank was still flooded form all the rain and snow from the previous week so it was from pegs 22 to 32 today.

Todays winner was Kev Doulton on end peg 32 by the gap betwwen the big and small lake and Kev was rewarded with a carp of 6-15 and 11-10 0f silvers for a grand total of 18-09 by fishing a couple of lines opposite peg 9 and long down the edge towards peg 33. Kev used a combination of maggots fished over groundbait to keep the fish coming and a rouge carp { the only one caught today } made an appearance to boost his weight in what was a hard earned win today { well done Kev}.

In second place was John Bennett on the other end peg peg 22 and after his first bonus fish a bream of about 4lb caught fishing long out in front John plundered the bush to his left catching small roach and one big perch all on red maggot for his weight of 8-08.

Todays winner of the carp and silver pools Kev Doulton.

Rolfslake Wednesday Open 13th February 2013.

This was not today.

Firstly all the anglers down the lake would like to wish Dai a speedy recovery after his operation this last week and hope to see him camped down the lake soon with Anne and Bowman well maybe in a little while when it warms up so you have plenty of time to make some rigs up buddy.

There were 6 down the lake today and the main reason for this today was the Siberian cold weather due and the snow that was due later in the day.

It was tough going for everyone as the chill factor must of been -7 degrees and sitting out in this is not top of most peoples agenda. The winner today was Graham Ridgely who after catching 3lb of silvers was in the process of packing up after 4 and a half hours but that changed when he caught a fish on the bomb rod and then in the last twenty minutes caught two more for a total of 32-07  { the three carp went 29-07 } well done Graham.

In second place was me on my second favourite peg peg 3 and i was greeted with the palet floating away as i arrived but a reach with the landing net pole got it back so i could put my box on it. I had an enjoyable day catching silvers losing a pike that would not let go of my roach until nearing the net and three welcome carp and i even lost two for a hard earned 25-01 all caught on red maggot feeding 4mm pellet.

Roaming Rods Club match 3rd February 2013.

Today Rolfslake welcomed the Roaming Rods as the first club down the lake this year and the 18 anglers were hoping that the fish were eager to have a feed as on Wednesdays match it was a major struggle. The weather today was cold and dull but with very little wind which help the anglers wishing to fish the pole and the anglers fishing the top part of the lake from pegs 16 round to 26 were rewarded with carp and a few more were lost as well as the carp were grouped tightly in the big lake.

Todays winner Fred Brown was able to string a few carp together for his weight of 84-07 closely followed by Dave Simpkin with 75-09 straight opposite on peg 22 so it made for a good battle between the two and Fred Parker had the top weight in the small lake with 21-00 from peg 7 so things are hopefully looking up for the next round of the pairs match next Sunday.

Three mad men go fishing.

With the lake frozen over again and the weather forcast predicting -2 degrees and snow John, Paul and myself must of been totally crazy to attempt fishing in such difficult conditions.

John had got the areators running so there were two areas of open water and we decided to fish pegpegs 31, 30 , and 28 not too far from the tea earn.

The story of our 4 hours fishing was John was in to a good stamp of roach straight away fishing single and double maggots fished over groundbait at both 4 and 10 metres and even managed to catch a 4lb bream and lost a couple as well. John weight was 11-12 which apart fron the bream was all roach and it made up for his DNW last Sunday during the pairs match ( well done John ).

As for me I fished the majority of the day fishing long on the deck using 2 and 3 maggots again getting plenty of bites but as I was using the wrong elastic I bumped far too many roach and even bumped two carp for good measure and in the end weighed 4-12. Fishing in Pauls swim was much slower but he still managed to catch roach and perch and he tipped back an estimated 3-08.

It was an enjoyable few hours down the lake but really cold and we agreed if we had got some fresh live red maggots we would of caught a lot more as the maggots today were frozen and motionless.

I was not asleep I promise.

Rolfslake on Wednesday 16th January 2012.

Today there were no takers for the open  as the lake water was not only high it was also iced over in places. John had done a great job keeping an area ice free in the middle of the lake by using the areators to disperse water onto the ice to melt it and it worked a treat allowing John, Paul and myself a chance to have a silvers match only fishing pole and a maximum 6 metres which to John meant 12 metres ,Paul 8 metres and me 6 metres { so much for rules }.

The little match was to last 4 hours as it was -6 degrees on accu weather but there were bites to be had fishing maggots on the deck with all of us catching roach { John caught one at about 1-08 } and some nice big perch and towards the end John was catching down the edge. I was so cold i had to stop fishing as my feet were frozen from having my boots in the water but returned to catch a few more roach and gudgeon.

Paul on peg 29 and John on peg 30.

At the weigh-in John ended up the victor with 12-10, Paul had 6-02 and i had 5-03 what was an enjoyable day if not very cold thank god the tea earn was in good use today { thanks John }.

Todays winner John with 12-10.

Rolfslake Open Wednesday 9th January 2013

A very cold day down the lake.

Today there were 6 anglers fishing the match and 4 pleasure anglers in the small lake so at least everyone had a little space, but for the three luck anglers on the car park bank { Pete, John and me } it was very cold.

The match started off very slow with the odd few silvers coming out and with Pete on peg 24 foulhooking a carp in the tail and losing it there was not much going on in the first hour. It was at this point that Pete decided to start catching silvers and was catching roach every put in but this changed when I on peg 22 caught a carp fishing 12 metres fishing corn hook bait and this put me in front. After that all of the 6 anglers went long and were rewarded with carp even though it was not frantic by any stretch even with the carp cruising on the surface playing hard to catch.

Todays winner was Pete Archer on peg 24 who started on the tip with no success apart from a lost carp, but after that caught a mixed bag of 10lb of silvers caught in about an hour and 5 carp . Pete fished long about 14 metres into the middle of the lake and was feeding 2mm pellet and the odd grain of corn fishing on the deck to catch his carp and after a patient 5 hours was rewarded with his weight of 56-14 for another win { well done Pete }.

Todays winner Pete Archer off peg 24.
