Rolfslake Wednesday 26th June 2013.

A tough day day down the lake.

Today saw 15 anglers down the lake and with 6 pleasure anglers in the small lake it was decided that todays match would be fished in the big lake to make it fair as there were lots of carp crashing in the small lake.

With draw called the anglers made an orderly queue in the hope to draw one of the 4 end pegs 18,22,9 and 32 as you were going to have a bit of space so with me drawing second last there was only pegs 17 and 32 left so the first peg my hand touched  came out and luckily it was peg 32 leaving Pete Arnold on 17 { sorry Pete }.

The story of the match saw a slow start for most of the anglers except Chris Telling who was happily catching bream and foulhooking carp so at least he was busy and after an hour Richard Fowley was into the start of a good run of carp on end peg 9 and then Paul Jay on peg 29 started his usual catch one lose one but at least he was catching.

As for the anglers down the bottom of the big lake it was really hard as there was very little wind and a suface scum the fish were trying to suck which distracted the carp from feeding so the weights were lower than expected.

Todays winner was me Eddie who was drawn for the second time in two week on peg 32 by the hut so hopefully i had learnt from my poor result from last week and today was much better. For the first 2 and a half hours i was watching Richard bag on peg 9 and was at least 8 carp behind but a change of fishing lines to fish up the slope down the channel was dramatic. I fished my X4 paste mix soft feeding 6mm pellet and the carp prefered this as my first 8 carp were all doubles but also i managed to get broken up 3 times on really big carp that went round to peg 33 and beyond. My highlight of the day was catching my first chub down Rolfs quickly followed by my second which went about 4lb and 3lb and also caught on paste but i lost a really big one on the peg 33 platform which looked closer to 6lb and fought really well before breaking the rig on the platform leg not very good. i caught 18 carp for 193-04 with fish to 15lb and really had a good day down the lake after spending the morning in the boat filming Chris Telling catching carp and bream.

My first two Rolfslake Chub.

In second place was Richard Fowley who was fishing peg 9 opposite me and he again caught fish to double figures by fishing two lines the first 14 metres along the bush and the second a tight line down the edge. Richard also used paste feeding pellet to keep the carp coming but as usual Richard went away with more knowledge of the how to catch the moody carp but did really well with his weight of 143-03.

Second place Richard Fowley.

Completing the frame was Paul Jay on peg 29 and by using the usual 8mm hard banded pellet feeding 6mm pellet Paul caught carp to 16lb fishing only an 8 metre line which seems to work really well for him and he was only one carp off second with his weight of 137-12.

Rolfslake Wednesday Open 19th June 2013

In form John Draper makes it two wins out of two.

With the attendances growing in the midweek matches it was nice to see a few returning anglers ready to do battle with Rolfslake’s junk yard dogs as they were called recently in a magazine article as they never give up fighting.

The weather today was warm considering the overcast skies and there were plenty of carp up in the water giving the anglers hope of a good days fishing and todays match was a very close affair as it was last week as any of the top 10 anglers could of won the match today as the carp coming out in the matches are pushing 20lb so two of these push you right up the results table.

It was a slow start for most anglers except Stuart Yeomans on peg 7 who was into fish pretty much straight away fishing the bomb to the far bank fishing pellet hookbait feeding pellet over the top so the signs were looking good for a big weight but the fishing slowed down towards the end of the match. In the big lake there was a good battle developing between Geoff Edwards and Chris Telling on pegs 14 and 16 and after 5 hours only two carp seperated them as they opted to catch all species instead of going for just carp and were rewarded with carp, perch, bream and roach and between them caught nearly 240lb with Chris just coming out on top by just 11lb.

Today winner was John Draper fresh from his match win on Sunday and with John drawing better than Picasso at the moment todays draw of peg 5 gave him another chance to break his PB for the second time in a week.  John fished the pole out in front at a range of 8 metres fishing pellet hookbait feeding pellet catching fish to double figures and towards the end of the match saw carp swirling down the edge to his left but left it too late to catch them in any numbers but still did enough to win todays match with his weight of 131-14 { well done John }.

There was a very close match for second place between Stuart Yeomans and Chris Telling on pegs 7 and 16 and after 5 hours was won by Stuart with his weight of 128-08 to Chris’s 128-03.

Todays winner John Draper.
Thanks to Chris Telling for todays photo’s.

John is saved by the bell.

I could not believe my luck to be drawn next to John on the last three matches and with todays pegs being evenly matched it was going to be very close as we were pegged either side of the gap between the big and small lake on pegs 8 and 32.

John did his best to stop the fish coming through the gap by heavily feeding both the far bank and the channel and he had already caught 5 carp before my  I caught my first one. John just like me suffered from lost foul hooked fish but in the end i was just one bite away from beating him as towards the end John’s catch rate slowed up and mine increased. John caught his carp on 8mm banded hard pellet feeding pellet and I caught  mine on  Pete Archers jelly pellets given to me and my X4 paste mix which has not let me down until today as i had made it too soft and too much additive applied.

At the end John had beaten me by just 6-02 in what has currently been a very close series between  us too { well done John ].

The score now stands at

John Bennett with a mixed bag of carp. chub and bream. Well done John.
