Rolfslake Wednesday Open 5th March 2014.

Bites galore down the lake as the Silver fish match record is broken.

John tells me that today the pleasure anglers were bagging in the small lake as the carp finally decided to have a proper feed as between them they caught over 30 carp and a few doubles included.

Most of the carp came from peg 38 with the angler there catching 18 carp and Taff also caught 9 carp leaving the rest still catching a few so things are finally starting to happen in the long run up to the Easter festival.

In the big lake it was a different matter as i believe the water is currently too deep and cold for the fish to feed properly but the silver fishing is fantastic at the moment with plenty of bites and some really big roach and perch coming to both maggots and casters and both Mick Jones who caught over 24lb of silvers and Pat Pritchard who had a great all silvers catch of 28-07 were kept busy with lots of bites to come 2nd and 3rd in the match .

The big surprise was with Steve Wilson who was fishing peg 32 by the hut and when it was his time to weigh in he needed help to bring out one of his nets which normally means alot of carp but when the net was clear of the water the anglers were gobsmacked when it was full of bream all 80-02 of them. Steve was fishing down the track towards peg 8 and was fishing with 8mm hookbait feeding pellet to catch his bream. John tells me the amazing thing was Steve also spent a while fishing the tip and when he went back on the pole the bream were still there so he thinks a 100lb weight of silvers could of been on today. Together with his carp Steve weighed in 84-11 for not only the match win but to also claim the top weight of silvers caught in a match down the lake { very well done Steve }.

Rolfslake Wednesday Open 26th February 2014

A mixed day down the lake.

Today saw a low attendance down the lake but there were still a few bites to be had with anglers starting with catching carp in mind but swapping to catching silvers if the carp did not repsond and this was evident in the catches of the top two.

In first place was Paul Jay on peg 22 who started on the tip fishing sweetcorn which got him two quick carp { one going 17lb } then swapping to to the long pole catching another two but after that had a a go at the silvers which he had 20lb + of silvers which after 5 hours gave him a winning weight of 65-08.

In second place was Kev Dolton who started on the tip trying to catch carp but after an hour with no joy opted to go for silvers and had a lovely day catching a near all roach catch of roach to nearly a pound but nearly 350 of them for his best weight of roach down the lake of 29-15. Kev played around with the speed of his caster hookbait falling which determined what size of roach he caught the slower the fall the bigger the roach.

Place Angler Peg Weight
1st Paul Jay 22 65-08
2nd Kev Dolton 28 29-15
3rd Butch 26 12-08
4th John Bennett 30 6-11
5th Russ 24 DNW

After the match I had a go for a carp and casted a waggler fished at 18 inches spraying pellet fishing a pellet hookbait into about 20 carp on the surface and caught a carp of 12lb within 5 minutes. Kev had a go but this time on peg 25 in to about 50 / 60 feeding carp on the surface and caught a common of about 10lb but it was crazy to see so many carp up in the water on a cold evening.

Rolfslake Sunday Open 12th January 2014

Tough day at the office.

Today saw 7 anglers arrive ready to fish a full to the brim Rolfslake and the reason the lake had not flooded was to the stirling work done by lake owner John Bennett in controlling the water level.

With most anglers having to fish on the upper platform as the lower ones were well under water most anglers opted to fish the bomb or short pole as there was a horrid swirling wind at long pole distance. Todays winner was Wayne Parker who opted to do neither and fish the top two as there was a very good depth by the platform and by fishing caster Wayne caught a very good stamp of roach and perch during the 5 hours which boosted his weight to 24-03 well done Wayne.

Today the carp we very few and far between with only 3 caught with 1 each for John B , Paul and Neil which still were not enough to beat Wayne.

Todays winner Wayne Parker

John B gains the first point of the year against the Pirate.

After our battle last year which saw John come out the victor with his 17 to 12 wins { very well done John } we started our competition alot earlier than last year .

Todays match was decided on the lucky carp John caught in the first half an hour which weighed 6-08 out of his 8-13 total whilst i was plagued by tiny roach whilst a few others caught the bigger ones. When i brought my net out it looked like a sardine net with lots of tiny fish but to no avail as they only went 5-07.

Rolfslake Sunday Open 8th December 2013

A ton winning weight is required to win todays match.

Todays anglers were greeted with a cold breezy wind and a motionless lake so the omens were not looking good for the anglers today and with the carp refusing to feed in any numbers it was going to be decided on who would have skill to temp a carp or two or try and catch some silvers ?.

The answer to that question was John Cowling who was fishing end peg 8 in the gap between the big and small lake and he had an enjoyable days fishing on the bomb fishing double corn hookbait along the far bank grasses and was rewarded with 19 small carp for his winning weight of 107-15 {well done John]. In second place and a long way back was John Brady on peg 22 who managed to put together a mixed bag of carp and silvers for his weight of 34-05 followed by Geoff Edwards on peg 30 with 16-15.

The main issues today were apart from the cold weather were the falling leaves on the lake making float fishing on the pole a bit of the challenge but Rolfslake showed if you come down any weight is possible as the carp are happy to feed even in very cold weather.
