Rolfslake Easter Festival 2014 Day 1

Today saw the start of the Rolfslake 3 day Easter Festival and with a sellout 24 anglers were hoping to be crowned2014 champion which was won last year by Middy sponsored angler Andy Quarmby.

Before the start John read out all the rules and one major change was that all fish were to be retained in the keepnets with a maximum 100lb net limit and any angler exceeding this would be deducted a penalty weight by how much you were over deducted from the weight limit of 100lb.

With draw called all the anglers made their way to the random draw which would decide the sections for the next three days and quite quickly the anglers called A section the section of death as it had all the big weight specialists in this section so they would be taking points of each other. As for the other two sections B and C it also had class anglers in them but were deemed to be more fairer so this was going to be a great battle.

The winner of A section today was Mark Newbold on peg 34 in the small lake and Mark had an eventful match but softened with a massive carp of 20-04 in his eventual weight of 161-06. B section was a very close battle by two of Rolfslake’s serial match winners Steve Waters and Dave Whiteman which would be eventually won by Dave with his weight of 112-11 to Steve’s 110-01 but Steve will rue the many lost fish on peg 9 today.

Mark Newbold with a common of 20-04

The star angler of the day was Malc Doyle on little favoured peg 17 and Malc put on a master class of short range paste fishing on his top kit to record the top weight of the day with 244-01 topped with a big common of 20-09 amongst his many othe big doubles.

Tomorrow the anglers move to the next section in their sequence hoping to either repair the damage caused by todays results or push forwards for another good days fishing.

Come back tomorrow for days 2 results.

Also i will be posting some more photo’s from todays match.

Chris Telling with his common of 18lb.

Anthony Flint with a mirror carp of 17-08.

Rolfslake Good Friday Open 18th April 2014

Sunny cold day down the lake.

John tells me today that there was a good attendance down the lake but a cold north westerly wind slowed the fishing down a bit but still most of the anglers had a good days sport.

Todays winner was Steve Wilson who was fishing the small lake peg 4 where most of the fish were on the Wednesday match and Steve caught mostly carp in his weight of 175-05 and a long way ahead of second place [well done Steve ]. There was a real scrap for second place in which 7 anglers were in contention and which was eventually won by Middy sponsored angler Andy Quarmby with 111-01 and 11 ounces ahead of Paul Jay in third place.

Good luck to the anglers fishing the next three days.

There is a open match tomorrow Good Friday times on the website and the lake is closed for the Easter Festival { Saturday, Sunday and Monday }.

To all the anglers fishing the Easter Festival John has mentioned that you can use your own keepnets and landing net tops

Draw times for the three days of the festival are draw 9.30 fish 11 to 4.

Good luck to all those competing and if you have any questions in advance regarding facilities or rules please contact John Bennett to clarify thank you.

Rolfslake Wednesday Open 2nd April 2014

Super Jay smashed the 300lb mark in todays open match.

Today saw the start of the new later match times which normally means two things big fish and bigger winning weights.

As i arrived today the carp park was full as there were pleasure anglers on pegs 34 to 38 and a mini match from pegs 40 round to peg 6 in the small lake so we were all squeezed in between peg 7 and resident Paul Jay right round to Russ on peg 32. The story of the match from where I was seated was there were plenty of carp cruising around both the big and the small lake which saw Frank Donachie , Pat Pritchard and Any Rayment all start on the waggler and long pole fished shallow with immediate success.

Both Paul and Pete were putting together a few fish in the gap on pegs 7 and 8 and also Mark Newbold was catching from no carp bay AKA peg 13 so thing were looking good for a big weight today and for the rest it was going to be a game of patience waiting for the wind to blow a few fish down to your pegs.

The pleasure and mini match anglers were also catching and with both parts of the lake in use and most pegs with an angler on the fish had nowhere to hide today.

In first place today and setting the benchmark and claiming the king of the lake was Paul Jay on peg 7 who started on the bomb catching a quick fish but when he saw a few fish on the top switched to the waggler and had about 4 carp, but it was when he switched to the right hand edge this is when his swim exploded into life. Paul fished 8mm pellet feeding pellet fished on the deck to catch most of his fish and he had a very good stamp of fish to 18lb which helped his board weight to 189lb and his final weight of 300-09 to set the highest weight of the year down the lake { well done Paul }.

Todays winner Paul Jay with 300-09.

Along way back and in a battle for second was Pete Archer on peg 8 and Mark Newbold on peg 13 which was won by Mark by just over 10lb. Both anglers fished pellet long to catch their fish alternating the depths to keep the fish coming and again there were some big fish on their board weights but in the end Mark won with his weight of 192-01 to Pete’s 181-02.

The theme as we went around weighing in the fish were the amount of big fish caught today as John Bennett on Peg 9 had 3 fish for 54lb topped with the biggest fish of the day at 19-10 and there were at least 6 other fish of 18lb or more caught today.

The last weekend opens for a while are this Saturday and Sunday draw times on the website and after that it is only going to be Wednesdays open where you can experience big fish and big weights and i expect Paul Jays weight of today to get beaten within the next couple of weeks as the fish are ready to have a good feed so it could be you.

If you are interested in fishing this weekend please phone John to book in  thanks.
