Rolfslake Wednesday Open 7th May 2014

Rolfslake the tackle graveyard just keeps on taking.

With the big fish making a regular appearance at Rolfslake the one thing that i have learnt is making sure your tackle is up to the job as in the the last two matches there have been 5 top kits destroyed with another top kit smashed today plus two number fours as the big 20lb plus carp lay in wait.

Today the match was based in the big lake with the anglers split into two sections the first was pegs 9,10,13,28,30 and 32 with the second section being 14,16,18 22,24 and 26 so the angler set about trying to win their section and hopefully some money. With the wind blowing hard into the car park bank most anglers wanted either pegs 32,9 or 13 but not the dreaded peg 10 aka no carp bay as it has not won a match for a very long time and the unlucky / lucky angler to draw this peg was serial drawbag Pete Archer.

The story of the match was as usual it was a slow start with Kev Dolton and Andy Rayment catching a few fish to start with with Pat on peg 9 having a very frustrating day playing tug of war with the fish in the bush on peg 9 which eventually cost him a few smashed rigs and two broken number fours making it an expensive day for him. At our end of the lake only Mick Jones was catching the odd few fish at the start mainly bream but they disappeared very quickly leaving him long periods without any fish.

Andy Quarmby on peg 14 was having a very quiet day and spent the last half walking around watching the rest of the anglers catching and losing fish so he was one less to worry about in B section.

The winner today was amazingly Pete Archer on peg 10 in no carp bay who after persisting fishing long with not much reward set about fishing to his left hand edge as he could see a few fish swirling and by fishing the top three of his pole set about putting a big weight together. Pete fished with pellet hookbait feeding pellet to catch big carp to upper doubles in his weight of 225-15 but it did cost him a top kit which i could hear break from the other side of the lake { well done Pete }.

Todays winner Pete Archer. This photo is not from today.

In a close battle for second overall it was between Kev Dolton on peg 32 and Paul Jay on peg 28 which would eventually be won by Kev by one fish or 13lb by Rolfslake standards as his weight beat Paul’s by 173-11 to 160-08 to claim second in the match leaving Paul to win the section by default.

The winner of C section was Toby Pope who had a late run of carp in the match by fishing long down the edge towards peg 15’s platform catching big carp in his weight of 130-08.

The Pirate wins the battle of Terret Twins.

With John and I drawn next to each other it was never going to be a quiet match and with both of us struggling to put any fish in quantities in the net it was always going to be a last hour and a half race when the fishing gets stronger. The most frustrating thing at this time is with the amount of fish that come down the edge you are always going to foul hook a few  and both John and I were heard cursing after each lost fish but what did it for John was when i landed a fish of 16-08 to beat him by just 15 ounces on the bell.

Rolfslake Bank Holiday Monday Open 5th May 2014.

Steve Wilson make it two wins in three days with a new PB.

John tells me there were only 8 anglers on todays match but they all had a great days fishing with the 8 anglers averaging 193lb each in what was bagging fest.

The winner today was Steve Wilson fresh from his win on Saturday and this time from peg 8 where Steve fished down the track fishing pellet feeding pellet to catch his mixed bag with carp to double figures in his final weight and new PB of 303-14 { very well done Steve }. In second place was lake owner John Bennett who today showed what he can do if he draws a half decent peg and today peg 5 was that peg with plenty of big carp coming from his short range line and John ended up 8lb clear of third place with his weight of 237-07. In third place was Micheal Corsini down on peg 40 at the bottom of the small lake and who worked hard putting together a mixed bag of fish for yet another 200lb weight today this time 229-07.

Mick Wilkinson on peg 4 had a mixed day with breaking two top kits ,catching a PB common carp at Rolfs of 21lb and catching 63lb of bream in his final weight of 229-07 { well done Mick }.

With the weather being settled  i expect the first 400lb weight to come out of Rolfs for a few years in the next two weeks with of course the right angler on the right peg as the carp are really feeding well but so are the bream as we have had weights in the last few days of 38lb , 40lb and now 63lb for anglers mainly fishing for carp so a suprise 100lb of silvers could be on the cards as these fish average about 3lb a piece and love pellet at the moment so who knows.

Rolfslake Saturday Open 3rd May 2014

Today saw a rare Saturday open due to club bookings taking over from now on and the 10 anglers today were hoping that with a sunny day the carp would have a proper feed but as usual the match saw plenty of carp cruising on top tempting the anglers to chase after them.

The anglers today were split into two sections one in the small lake and one in the big lake with pegs 38 and 32 swapping sections to make it fairer and as the all in was called you could see a few anglers trying to catch a quick carp from the surface. The next few hours would see the anglers catch a mixture of bream and carp but in no numbers with a few hooked and lost so a frustrating start for all except for Steve Wilson on peg 18 who was putting a good mixed bag of fish together.

In the last two hours the weather got a little overcast and with that a shadow was cast in the margins with a few more carp coming out with Toby Pope on peg 4 bagging down the edge who would eventually come second with his weight of 134-11 but was always playing catchup and in the end was 30lb off a match win but set a new PB in the process.

In first place was Steve Wilson on peg 18 who caught from a few places in his swim down the left hand edge, the bush to his right at short range and finally a line straight out in front and by fishing pellet he caught nearly 40lb of bream to go with his 120lb of carp to double figure { well done Steve }.

Rolfslake Easter Festival 2014. Day 3.

Day 3 report.

On a thrilling last day down the lake anyone from 8th upwards were in with a shout of winning this years Rolfslake festival and you could feel the tension as the draw was called. With the leading three anglers after two days Steve Waters, Mick Lane and Mark Newbold fishing different sections { the dreaded A section for Steve, B section for Mick and the consistent C section for Mark } it was imperative that they avoided a poor performing peg and luckily they did that with Steve drawing peg 4 in the small lake and Mark peg 18 on the motorway bank in the big lake but Mick had drawn not a great peg in peg 28.

The rest of the anglers thought that the result was a done deal between Steve and Mark but how wrong they were as both the anglers struggled during the first part of the match whilst the chasing pack were closing in with Jon Walker leading the way in A section on peg 38 , Malc Doyle was way ahead  in B section with Mick Lane struggling and in C section Andy Quarmby was dominating this section with a great display of shallow fishing and at this point Mark was way down in the section as both Phil Powell on 22 and Micheal Corsini on 25 were also putting together ton plus catches from their pegs.

At the half way point it was too hard to call as Liam Bough and Jon Walker were both ahead of Steve in A section ,Mick Lane was well down in B section and Mark was lying at least 4th in C section so the winner could come from the remaining 6 anglers so a tense last half was to reveal all.

The final part of the match saw the the lake change again as the weather turned cooler and suddenly a switch by Steve to add a few silvers to his catch whilst the rest went all out to catch carp was a master stroke as he reeled in both Liam and Jon and Dave on peg 5 to win the section by 2lb and claim that magical 1 point for his total of 4 points. Mick Lane the only other angler on 3 points had to win his section to tie with Steve but alas he came 4th giving him a total of 7 points with Mark in C section overhauling both Phil and Micheal to come second and claim two points giving him a total of 6. The dark horse on day 3 was Malc Doyle who after his section win on Saturday had a tough draw on Sunday costing him 5 points but a brilliant recovery on Monday gave him a section win and a total of 7 points.

After all the weights were checked and verified the outcome was a deserved win and Rolfslake Champion for Steve Waters who fished very well over the three days with his combined weight of 371-10 and 4 points closely followed by Mark Newbold with 355-12 and 6 points and in third place and well deserved was Malc Doyle and his weight of 404-07 and 7 points.

Rolfslake 2014 Easter Festival Champion. Steve Waters.

From left to right MicK Lane 4th, Champion Steve 1st, Mark Newbold 2nd, Jon Walker 5th and finally Malc Doyle 3rd.

John has asked me to appologise to the anglers who were waiting for the food at the end but with the distractions of the morning this was overlooked and John will sort the anglers with a bag of pellet to cover the £2 that was collected per angler for food..

The future of next years Festival is under review but I would like to say a MASSIVE thanks to John and Pauline for hosting the event and their hospitality during the 4 days and for Paul Jay for his help in helping John prepare the cabin for the festival and his help with weighing in fish and marshalling the event.

Also a big thanks to Ann and Annette for their help in helping with the breakfast in the morning.

John hopes to see the visiting anglers soon.

Rolfslake Easter Festival 2014. Day 2.

Day 2 report . Today the returning 24 anglers were greeted with a much colder day with wind and rain also expected so talking to John he tells me that the catches were much lower than yesterday with the exception of Steve Waters on peg 18 who put together a great weight of 184-12 from peg 18, John Bennett on peg 22 with 150-07 and Jon Walker who also caught over a ton with his weight of 114-10 from peg 23. The current leader of the festival is Steve Waters with 3 points but has to fish the dreaded A section tomorrow with Mick Lane also on 3 points but has a better chance as he is fishing B section but they are hotly pursued by 5 other anglers who are are 2 and 3 points behind so it should be an exciting day 3 down the lake tomorrow. Come back to see who will be crowned Rolfslake Easter Festival 2014 Champion. I will be posting more photo’s as they become available.

Current Festival leader Steve Waters.
