Rolfslake Saturday Open 18th October 2014.

Report

Today saw a low attended open but with a few more weekend opens coming up this will hopefully change quickly as if todays match was anything to go by the fish are still happy to feed as the weather was still quite mild for mid October.

Today saw the anglers fish the middle bowl outside the cafe from pegs 9 round to 32 and with fish crashing around the lake hopes for a good days fishing would keep the anglers busy. With the all in called Kev Dolton on peg 9 was the first into fish but spent most of the 5 hours playng tug of war with the carp in the bush to his right. Steve Williams on peg 13 was also catching carp now and then until his pole broke on the fat end trying to pull for a break.

As for me i had the most frustrating day of the year so far as i hooked and lost fish after fish from the chanel on peg 32 as the wind had blown them into the gap but managed to land a few big carp which averaged 10lb each. Another reason to be frustrated was watching Steve Waters on peg 30 give me a right old battering on the next peg but also a masterclass of edge fishing by fishing to the platform on peg 29.

Steve fished 3 lines a short one to his left for the silvers but was smashed up by the carp, the second was a long line at 16 metres which gave him 3 carp and finally the third line tight to the bank by the platform which gave him the majority of his fish. With the rules being relaxed today in the regards of weighing fish so we could get a few photos and also all the anglers had to use multiple nets to give the big carp plenty of space it was amazing how many double figure fish Steve caught { about 15 out his 25 } and in what great condition they were in.

Steve fished corn hookbait feeding corn to keep the fish coming and was telling me there was little sign of fish in his swim but with his skill kept the fish coming for his final weight of 275-01 which in my book is a great weight for this time of the year { well done Steve on your win}

If you fancy fishing one of these opens please see the available dates at the top of the main page.

Todays winner Drennan sponsored angler Steve Waters.

WEDNESDAY 16TH JULY OPEN MATCH

New lake King in todays match.

Today saw a low attended match down the lake which was unusual as the day was sunny and warm especially for the anglers on pegs 16 and 18 me and Kev but the lake looked perfect for a good days fishing and with the all in sounded it was just a matter of settling down and getting a few early fish. The only people i could see catching fish were Kev on peg 16 and Mark and Graham on pegs 26 and 28 but for the rest it was pretty slow.

It was at about the 2 and a half hour mark todays winner had one of those special memorable Rolfslake super bagging sessions that he wont forget for a while and that angler was Middy sponsored Andy Quarmby .

In Andys own words had an absolute afternoons fishing of a lifetime at Rolfslake. Drew mega bunghole peg 32 and in the last 2 and a half hours caught fish using a 7 metre margin pole fishing shallow using red hydro .24 line and a size 12 hook using 6/8mm pellet. Andy had 350lb in 2 and a half hours and he adds it was a once in a lifetimes fishing as he fed a handfull of 6mm pellets he could literally see 10 carp flashing under the surface ready to grab his hookbait and they did that on a regular basis. Andy recons he lost about 40 minutes having to weigh fish and with an extra hour he believes he could of caught 600lb but in the end he set a new PB for himself at Rolfslake with 442-08 { very well done Andy }.

New lake King. Middy sponsored Andy Quarmby with a new PB for Rolfslake with 442-08.

In second place today was Mark Newbold on peg 26 on the car park bank and after a very slow first couple of hours of fishing out in front switched to fishing between pegs 26 and 27 in about two feet of water feeding loose groundbait and was very soon into fish and some very big as well. by regular feeding of his swim Marks catch rate accelerated even after breaking a top kit on a fish and in the end Mark recorded just one fish short of a rapid 300lb in 3 hours with his weight of 297-07.

3rd place John Bennett

Completing the frame was lake owner John Bennett on peg 13 in the shade and John also had a very good days margin fishing by only fishing just his top two and his short fighting number 3 section. I knew John was catching  a fishng even though i could not see him as his bite indicator Olly the dog barked ever time he caught a fish { and that was pretty much for 5 hours} and by feeding heavy with 6mm pellet fishing paste on the hookbait john on a regular basis and after 5 hours caught 246-10 of big fish to 18lb.

Rolfslake Friday night match 9th July 2013

Two PB’s in tonight match

Tonight saw the last of the current set of 6 nights matches and with that 12 hardy anglers turned up to experience Rolfslakes fishing in the dark. With draw called at 7.15 all the anglers wanted to draw the feature pegs 34,9,7 and 8 as they were black with fish and with the visting anglers drawing first all these pegs went straight away and when Paul, John and I went to draw there was only 10,32 and 30 left so i went in and got rid of 32 for them leaving John on 30 and Paul on 10 in no carp bay.

The story of the match was after a slow start with the anglers losing a few fish Simon Watkins on peg 8 was starting to catch from all his lines so was pulling away from the rest with Ernie on peg 34 adding fish to his net on a regular basis, as i had to endure the sight of John on peg 30 starting to catch fishing tight to the edge on paste on his top kit plus one.

As it got dark there were more people starting to catch but all i see were the anglers in the middle bowl catching and losing fish with Paul J losing more than most so it looked to be very close after Simon on peg 8.

The winner tonight was Simon Watkins who had his mate Gino for company on peg 7 and Simon fished a very tidy match catching from lines both out and tight to the edge with big fish to double figures gracing his landing net on a regular basis and after 5 hours weighed 229-11 for not only the match win but a new PB {well done Simon }.

Also setting a new PB was lake regular Toby Pope on peg 40 who caught down to his right hand margins to record his top weight to date of 148-09 { well done Toby }.

The anglers would also like to thank Pauline Bennett for preparing the food after the match which was my appreciated by the guys.

John expects to be running a few more night matches in August so look out if you fancy having a go.

Battle royal in the big lake.

Tonight i had the pleasure of fishing next to John Bennett on end peg 30 on the car park bank so that meant only one thing plenty of banter or not as John had hurt his arm so i was going to fish against a one armed angler . As i was still annoyed at last week by being beaten by 7lb and falling another point behind one thing was for sure i was going to go for it tonight fishing on peg 32 and hopefully get a few fish down the track.

The story of the night was that i struggled whilst it was still light as John managed a few big 15-16lb carp fishing down the edge so i was already playing catch up but i was not concerned as i was feeding a line down the gap towards peg 8 so i knew i would catch down there later. That idea was totally blown out of the water as when the light were turned on the lights from peg 8 and 9 were pointed towards me and i could not see a thing so i had to fish to my right and only caught a few fish.

John however was catching regular big fish down the edge and was pulling further away with his big weighers compared to my small 10lb fish and i recon i was about 60lb behind then a stroke of luck as the mist came down and some how dulled down the lights on the opposite bank and that was my cue to fish down the gap and jackpot the fish were still there and in the last hour and a half i was coming back at John catching my fish on paste and with 4 minutes to go hooked and landed a fish of 14lb whilst in the same time John hooked and lost two carp which meant it was going to be very close.

At the weigh in John had 120lb on the board and after his net fish weighed in 166-01 and my board weight went 110lb and added to my net fish they went 171-14 to just beat John by 5-13 but more importantly a point back on a very good nights battle.
