Drennan Rolfslake Easter Festival 2016 Day 3

2016-03-03 22.43.42

Day 3 the grand finale.

Today saw the last day of the Drennan Rolfslake Easter Festival 2016, and with 9 anglers in with a shout of glory it was going to be a tense 5 hours. The current leader Mark Newbold had drawn peg 17 in C section with Dan Deakin on peg 18 who was only 2 points behind.

A sections battle would see Malc Doyle fish moody peg 2 and Anthony Flint on peg 7 with Malc having to beat Anthony to stand any chance of victory. Last but not least in B section there were three anglers Phil, Chris and Steve all in with a chance as they were only 1,2 or three points behind and really needed Mark to blow out and one of the three to win their section.

The next five hours would see all the contenders struggle to either catch carp or control their sections as the not so favoured pegs came to life on what was a strange day for both the weather and carp feeding.

In A section there was a three way battle for the section between Kev Simpson ,Malc Doyle and Anthony Flint who all had chances to pull away but lost fish would eventually see the scales fall in favour of Anthony to secure the precious one point.

B section was really slow for all the anglers but with the wind blowing from the car park bank to the motorway bank, the fished moved into pegs 8 ,9 and 10 and with that any chance of victory for Phil ,Steve and Chris was gone as John Bealey won the section from peg 10. John fished long into peg 11 and could see carp moving in and out of the bush and managed to trap some carp and lose a couple with his weight of 57-01.

In C section all the current leader Mark had to do was come in the top two to secure victory but was trapped on peg 17 as it does not give you a lot options other than fish out I the middle. Mark must of been really frustrated to see Andy Quarmby on peg 22 bagging followed later on in the match by Mick Lane on 16 and Dan Deakin on 18 and that would see Mark slip into fourth place, and with that his chance of victory disappeared .

After a tough three days of battling the fish and the weather and after all the points and weights were confirmed, Anthony Flint was confirmed as Drennan Rolfslake Easter Festival Champion 2016 ( well done Anthony).

I would like to thank John and Pauline Bennett for looking after all the anglers on what might be their last Festival down the lake, and to Dai Thomas for assisting in the preparation of the lake and finally to all the anglers for fishing the Festival in a truly competitive and sporting spirit.

An extra special thanks go to Steve Waters and our friends at Drennan International for the goodie bags given to all the competing anglers.

One thing for sure is that the Travel Lodge will be quieter and the bar sales in the pub will be down until next year lol.

Drennan Rolfslake Easter Festival 2016 Day 2

20120908_170548

Day 2 report.

Today saw the halfway stage of the Easter Festival which normally sets up the anglers for day three’s gran finale.

The weather was a lot worse than yesterday with a real bitter cold wind and rain battering the anglers during the match.

The winners from day one Chris Telling, Malc Doyle and Mark Newbold were on pegs 4 for Chris, 22 for Malc and peg 8 for Mark so they had fair pegs for today’s Match.

Current Champion Steve Waters continued with his struggles at the drawbag as he drew peg 40 in A section which fished really poorly yesterday. Steve stuck with it and was rewarded with a mixed bag for 19-15 to come back with 2 points , keeping himself still in contention.

As for Mark ,Chris and Malc they came second third and fourth in section to also stay in the hunt for Festival glory.

The section winners today on what was a really tough match were John Morgan on yesterday’s winning peg 7 who put together a hard earnt 31-03 to win A section.

B section saw Andy Johnstone put together a winning 35-15 weight from peg 10 to stay just ahead of Mark Newbold on peg 8 who was only 1 bream behind with 33-00.

In C Section the battle was even closer with only 5 ounces separating Ryan Lewis and Anthony Flint on pegs 17 and 18, which was eventually won by Anthony with his weight of 32-05 to Ryan’s 32-00.

Overall Mark Newbold is currently leading the Festival with 3 points with the next 8 anglers all within range to overtake him if he slips up in C Section  tomorrow.

Roll on day 3 which is setup to be an exciting climax to the Drennan Rolfslake Easter Festival.

Drennan Easter Festival 2016 Saturday Day 1

www.drennantackle.com

Easter Festival day 1

Today saw day 1 of the Easter Festival and 21 eager anglers arrived at the lake hoping to dethrone two time Festival champion Steve Waters.

The Festival is divided into three sections, A which is in the small lake, B which is the middle bowl and C the bottom end of the lake.

The angler that wins his section gets 1 point and the angler that comes last in section recieves 7 points etc with the angler that has the lowest points score over 3 days becoming the Festival winner.

With the draw completed the anglers went off to their respective sections with A section being named the section of death by the anglers as it contained all the regulars who were going to take points off each other.

The anglers today were greeted with a strong gusting wind and rain which made fishing the long pole really difficult for most of the guys in the big lake. The first two hours were pretty slow for most but as the wind died down more and more anglers could be seen playing fish and it became really close at the end in sections A and C.

In A section there was a three way battle between Dan on 34 ,Mick on 2 and Mark on 7 who all had good numbers of carp but would see the 6 carp Dan Deakin lost opening the way for Mark Newbold to win the section with his weight of 79-11.

20160313_164348

In B section Anthony Flint on peg 10 seemed to be controlling the section for the first three hours but a number of lost carp halted his progress

The combination of Malc Doyle on 32 changing to fishing paste and his aggressive feeding  switched the lead in the last two hours, Malc had a total of 10 proper bites resulting in 5 fish for 75-14 to Anthony’s 36-07.

C section saw the Champion for the last two years Steve Waters draw little fancied peg 26 which meant he was going to have a real battle to win an unprecedented third title and after 5 hours salvaged a hard earnt 3 points .Current Champion Steve Waters.

The main battle was between Phil Powell on peg 24 and Colmic sponsored Chris Telling on peg 17 (which I would not of fancied in the wind). Phil started really well building a solid weight for the first three hours catching 10 carp on a bottom rig fishing pellet feeding pellet, but the peg dried up for the next two hours and Phil ended up with 96-07 and 2 points.

Colmic sponsored Chris Telling.

Colmic sponsored Chris Telling.

Chris however spent the early part of the match losing a few carp, but towards the end he was really flying catching about 12 carp.

Chris fished a 6mm pellet on the hook feeding the same over the top to the record the top weight of 104-06 and the all important 1 point.

Day two see’s the anglers move one section up so if you fished C section you go to A and A goes to B etc and with the weather due to be getting worse it will be interesting to see who comes out on top.

Roll on day 2.

A couple of photos from today.
