Neil Riddy’s Club Match. Ospreys AC

11th April

A windy day at the lake.

Today Rolfs Lake was host to a club match. 25 anglers were fishing. The wind was blowing across the big lake towards peg 19. The sun was trying to break through the clouds and it looked promising for a nice sunny day. Carp were seen to be topping all over the big lake so it looked like shallow might be a good way to attack…. or would it.

Waiting to do the draw

With the draw done and everyone setting up the sun broke through and black shadows could be seen swimming around the top end of the big lake.ย  One thing was for sure today and that was that the person that drew peg 20 would get on the peg kings board as its not been fished for a while. That person was Mark Gilbert, new peg king of peg 20. ๐Ÿ˜€

Top end of the little lake.

With the match under way and the fish still topping a lot of people tried targeting the fish by fishing shallow but at the start people were foul hooking fish and loosing them. Paul Jay on peg 23 was fishing the pellet waggler and was having a few but he was finding it hard firing his pellets out due to the wind blowing them back towards him ๐Ÿ˜€

After starting on the pole shallow fishing Mick Whitmore on peg 17 has also switched to the pellet waggler and was catching regularly and pulling the fish off Paul. Mick had the wind behind him and had no problem firing out his feed pellets. Mick was storming away in the big lake.

Simon Mound on peg 15 messing it up ๐Ÿ˜€

The story on the little lake was that it was not fishing as productive.ย  Tex on Peg 8 was catching a few and so was Adam on peg 34 (his home peg :P)

The Little Lake.

Back in the big lake Mick on peg 17 was still doing the damage on the pellet waggler. Paul Jay had switched to the bomb and was catching a few more fish. Simon on peg 15 had also managed to catch a few on the bomb.

Spring Festival Day 1 Results.

3rd April

HAPPY EASTER EVERYONE (click to enlarge)

A cold raining day saw the start to the Rolfs lake’s Easter festival, and the anglers had a chance to meet old friends and rivals they had not seen for a year. I was pleased to see all the anglers arrive down the lake {as i was on stewarding duties today } and surprised to see people who knew who i was due to the website, so new angling acquaintances were made.

With one angler dropping out leaving only 23 anglers, it was left with two sections of 8 anglers and one of 7 so the points would be reversed with the winning angler getting one point decending down to either 8 or 7 points which all the anglers agreed was a fair result. Also with the anglers spread out leaving a long walk to the scales it was decided by John for this weekend only that fish over 10lb could be put in the keepnet but only a maximum of 6 would be allowed in one net but any monster carp 17lb + would have to be weighed there and then.

As the anglers drew their pegs they preferred to have sections B {pegs 9,10,13,14,27,28,30,31} orย  section C {15,17,18,19,21,23, 24 or 26} as section A { 34,35,37,40,2,4,7,and 8} usually fishes better on day 3.

The summary of the day was with an annoying breeze making presentation difficult , the anglers found a slow start to the match with section C anglers having a few fish and Matt Smith {champion 2008} was making good progress from peg 15 and right opposite on peg 27 Mark Malin was also having a few carp. Derek Hammond on peg 19 started well but struggled towards the end, and the Swindon Mafia trio of Powell, Lane and Bennett had all drawn in B section so today we would see who would be the Godfather .ย In the dreaded A section Tim Guise and Mark Bedford {champion 2009} were catching fish but the anglers down the bottom bank 40,and 2 were struggling for bite and also had the wind blowing in their faces so it would be cold for them today.

Phil Powell struggling on peg 10.

As the match progressed more and more anglers started to catch all around the lake as the wind died down and the anglers could see their floats properly and the anglers that were using banded pellett were catching better than the ones using soft pellet and corn and even Chris Telling was catching on the paste .

After 5 hours the top angler on the day was Matt Smith with a fantastic top weight on the lake of 212-04 {sorry Simon} and he started off fishing long 16 metres on the deck and in the end was catching a lot shorter also on the deck fishing banded pellet and two ton weights from Tim Guise and Mark Bedford from A section also fishing the banded pellet made for good viewing from where i was sitting. Normally on days two and three the fishing gets better so i will keep you updated with the progress as it happens.

Neil Riddy’s Little Lake Match.

21st March

Small Lake not match fished for a while

Neil Riddy and a few of his club mates had booked the little lake for a small knock up match. 7 anglers turned up to see how the little lake would fish. It had not been used for a match since the winter league.

Everyone fancied peg 34 as its normally always good for a few fish, who would draw it ? Adam much to his delight. I think he was going for his 4th win in a row, would he do it or not ๐Ÿ˜€

The weather at the lake was glorious, it looked perfect for everyone to catch a few fish but the lake had other idea’s.

Everyone started off fishing for carp. Adam on peg 34 had 2 in the first 5 minutes but then was biteless for the rest of the match. Elsewhere most people resorted to catching silvers but even they were proving tricky to catch. Everyone caught fish but only 4 people weighed in.

Neil Riddy ready for some action.

Ginge wondering why I was taking a picture of him

Tactics Talk maybe ?

Adam Managed the win in the first 5 minutes of the match and got his 4 in a row, Well done. I put it down to his new lucky luggage ๐Ÿ˜€

1 Adam Griffith 34 22-4
2 Chris Lovelock 36 14-8
3 Mark Orchard 38 4-12
4 Simon Mound 2 1-3 ๐Ÿ˜€

I would like to thank Neil for the invite and I hope it fishes better for the next one ๐Ÿ™‚
