Jinx Series, Round 1. 2011. 14th May 2011

All picture are clickable for a bigger view

Today saw the Jinx Squad return to the lake for their first match of the year. The Jinx Series is in it 10th year. Malc Doyle who runs the series as a bit of fun mainly and tries to make the matches more about having a laugh than big money payout. This year there are 27 angler fishing the series. Malc splits them up in to 3 section’s of 9.

Just so people don’t have too much fun and relax too much Malc’s daughter Gem fishes too. If you get beaten by her your name is added to her impressive MINX list. Not only that….. If she beats you you are eligible to be picked for the new 2011 MINX hat πŸ™

For the first match Gem drew a peg from the bag and whoever drew that peg in the match would wear the hat…Simple. She pulled out peg 40 and Neil Riddy drew peg 40 so got to wear the hat. I think secretly he wanted to wear it anyway lol πŸ˜€

The new 2011 MINX Hat modelled by Neil Riddy, no stranger to stupid hats πŸ˜€

The draw was done almost on time, not bad for Malc really. The only reason it was nearly on time was he was at the lake having previously fished helped with the weigh in on the Night match.

On to the match. First off a major photo explosion with all the runners and riders from this years series.

The all in was sounded at 1pm and fishing got underway. I could only see the little lake today. Neil Riddy on peg 40 had landed his first carp before everyone else had finished feeding their swims and it wasn’t before Pete on peg 4 was walking past with a weigher. Mitch over on peg 34 was having a few fish too. I could not buy a bite and Malc and Ade were also the same.

Within 20 minutes I knew I was going to have a struggle along with the rest of the lads in the little lake. This was not helped by the Scream we all fear…… Gem had landed her first fish and it was a 14lb’er too.

After the first 2 hours Malc had managed to get a carp on the paste feeder so it was only me and Ade who were fishless in the little lake. I fed my lines and went to see how the big lake was doing.

It was like a different match in the big lake. There was elastic streaming from top kits and rods bent double :O πŸ˜€ (see first picture in this report) I sat behind Gem and watched in envy πŸ™ Gems float sailed away and she hooked in to another fish, shame it was up the arse. After a lengthy fight she had landed another 14lb’er. Things were not looking good. Paul on 15 was also in to plenty of fish fishing the feeder, he would have had one more but was put off by my picture taking and lost the carp that would have took him over the magical 100lb…..oooops sorry mate πŸ˜€

Gem playing a foul hooker

Paul also playing a fish. He lost it just after I took this pic, ooops πŸ˜€

Gem 14lb'er

I went back to my peg hopeful for a fish and sure enough I hooked into and lost my first fish πŸ™ Straight back out and hooked one in the gob. As I netted it I gave a loud roar in relief πŸ˜€

Malc also managed his second and last fish of the match. Mitch was catching a mixture of carp and silvers, Tony and Dave on 7 and 8 were having a few fish as there was plenty of splashing coming from that direction.

John Bennett had been away all afternoon and got back gagging for a cuppa tea so turned the generator on. Normally there is nothing wrong with doing this but unknown to John the aerators were still plugged in……………………… Malc was fishing to his aerator on peg 36 and nearly fell off his box when it fired up πŸ˜€ I didnt laugh too much. Also Dave Moore on peg 31 got a similar surprise πŸ˜€

I only caught 3 fish today but one of them made my match.

19lb 4oz. Thanks Tony for taking the picture.

Not long after a very excited Jon Hatch came and asked me to take a picture of his new PB carp.

Jon Hatch with a 18lb 12oz PB carp. Well done.

With the all out sounding at 6pm I knew I had been Minxed as gem had 5 fish to my 3. The little lake had fished poorly so we were all going to be candidates for the new hat with the exception of Mitch who managed to equal Gems weight and avoid the dreaded MINXING πŸ˜€

Great match (for some πŸ˜€ ) The next match in the series is on 4th June so Gem will have plenty of time to pick out of the 21 people who will wear the hat next year.

Well done to all the winners today, well deserved on a hard day (sulky Saturday as Malc calls it) at the lake.

Thanks for reading. Si, Eddie and John.

Herbie Invitational Match. 7th May 2011

Herbie. On one of his annual matches at the lake.

Herbie had booked the lake for one of his annual visits and invite some friends from Match Fishing Scene Forums. 20 Anglers turned up eager to fish. John Bennett was down to fish also taking the numbers to 21.

The normal queue formed for the draw and people drew and walked off to get ready however when there was supposed to be 2 pegs left in the bag there was only one in there. John and Herbie were still too draw. John kindly dropped out from the match leaving Herbie with peg 4.

A few minutes laterΒ  John is back fishing again as the missing peg was found on the floor. It happened to be peg 2 (flyer πŸ˜› ) Someone must have drawn their peg and pulled out peg 2 as well. So John can still draw good pegs even when there is none in the bag lol πŸ˜€ πŸ˜€

The weather today was a bit poor really for the first 2 hours with rain falling while everyone was setting up. The wind also picked up blowing down in to the little lake this time.

Fishing today was from 11am to 4pm.

As you will see by the results the lake fished very hard again with only the corner pegs producing good weights and consistent fish. After the rain went away the sun came out full blast on the lake and the carp were cursing around again.

After having no fish for 3 hours I started catching with just 20 minutes to go which is just typical πŸ˜€

Wednesday 4th May 2011 Open Match

Paul has found a good place to fish

As i arrived down the lake today i was greeted with the regular warm greeting and stick from John and Paul that these midweek opens are famous for.

I was really looking forward to reclaiming my victory back that i lost to John on my last visit so i had a plan to fish slightly different than would of been expected as there was no X4 paste in my bag today but a bag of new X4 version 2 so i was really confident of a good days lump fishing.

With the assorted cast ready at the draw it was nice to see my website partner Simon there as he had travelled from up North to continue on his glory run of two victories in hisΒ last two visits. Also another person i had not seen for a while was Geoff Edwards who is my partner in crime in giving John his fare share of abuse and by draw time it was in full swing { i am not sure what the visiting made of this }.As the draw commenced i wanted a peg in the small lake and was not disappointed to draw peg 6 but thought it might of been a little too early to be able to catch the fish up the edge but with Paul Jay on 7 and and John on flyer peg 40 i was certainly going to be amused for 5 hours. Simon was on peg 9 and Geoff on peg 18 with all the visiting anglers drawing flyer pegs 2,4, 8 and 16 hopefully Rolfslake would fish to its usual high standards as is the case in these mid week matches.

The story of the match was in the small lake John Bennett was on to a flyer in the first 40 minutes as his first 4 fish went 70lb on the tip fishing to the rope in peg 39 so it was going to be a tough ask to catch him up and with the big lake fishing hard all the action was going to be reserved for pegs 9 round to 40 as it was black with fish and with the wind blowing into the small lake the carp were following the blossom that had fallen into the lake. Simon on peg 9 had already lost a carp in the big bush to his right but managed to drag the second one out but it was hard going, and with Daz Kelly on 8 fishing the other side of the bush but catching a mixed bag of chub, perch and carp in was going to be an interesting 5 hours. As for Paul and myself it started slow but then picked up in the last 2 hours by which time Paul was losing 5 fish to every one he landed on long pole fishing 8mm pellet on the deck feeding by pot, and all i could do was catch doubles but they were not coming fast enough as my 8 carp went 105-00 {the biggest was 17-14} fishing paste down the ledge towards peg 5 feeding heavy by hand

The winner today was lake owner John Bennett who after catching his big 4 fish on the tip got caught on the rope snapped his rig then went on the 3 metre line lowered his bait of 11mm pellet and sawΒ the floatΒ disappear and then coming back with a 19-00 carp on it brilliant i though as he shouted this to me at leastΒ 6 times. for the remainder of the match John alternated between long and short pole lines down the edge and at 3 metres to catch big carp { John had 137-00 on the board by weigh-in time} for his final weight of 190-04 and victory to sink the Cartel members and the Pirate in this match { well done John }.

In second place was Simon Mound who after his slow start abandoned the bush to his right and started aΒ  new 5 metre line straight out in front which runs down the bar between the big and small lake and by fishing big donkey choker 15mm pellet and feeding positively Simon got the fish lined up with also a good stamp of fish his biggest going over 18-00 but in the end fell short of a victory by only 23lb but by Rolfslake’s standards that could be only one or two fish and he ended up with 167-00 but still a great weight {well done Simon }.

All in all the anglers enjoyed their afternoon out in the sun and cant wait till the next mid week match as with the weekends now fully booked through club bookings Rolfslake can now only be fished on a Wednesday or a night match, so get down to one of these matches and have some fun.

Bank Holiday Open Match. 2nd May 2011

Very windy down the lake again today

17 anglers turned up today on a very very windy day down the lake. It was windy yesterday as well but hopes of it dying down were shattered at 7.30 when branches started dropping off the tree’s as the wind picked up again.

Before everyone else got to the lake John had a bit of a problem with a cormorant. He had been eating the fish from the lake and then having a bath in the salt dips…

Naughty Bird

Pretty much everyone today was going to be suffering from the wind in one way or another.

More to follow…bed time πŸ™‚

MFS Pre Withy Match. 29th April 2011

The Match Fishing Scene Lads were at the lake today, the match was organised my Sconey.

Scone. Todays match organiser.

The draw was at 9 (ish) and fishing was from 11-4pm. There was a total contrast with the weather today also. It was windy, cloudy and cold. We had a few rain showers as well and a Thunder storm after the match.

The fishing was rock hard today with pretty much everyone struggling for bites.
