Wednesday 4th May 2011 Open Match

Paul has found a good place to fish

As i arrived down the lake today i was greeted with the regular warm greeting and stick from John and Paul that these midweek opens are famous for.

I was really looking forward to reclaiming my victory back that i lost to John on my last visit so i had a plan to fish slightly different than would of been expected as there was no X4 paste in my bag today but a bag of new X4 version 2 so i was really confident of a good days lump fishing.

With the assorted cast ready at the draw it was nice to see my website partner Simon there as he had travelled from up North to continue on his glory run of two victories in his last two visits. Also another person i had not seen for a while was Geoff Edwards who is my partner in crime in giving John his fare share of abuse and by draw time it was in full swing { i am not sure what the visiting made of this }.As the draw commenced i wanted a peg in the small lake and was not disappointed to draw peg 6 but thought it might of been a little too early to be able to catch the fish up the edge but with Paul Jay on 7 and and John on flyer peg 40 i was certainly going to be amused for 5 hours. Simon was on peg 9 and Geoff on peg 18 with all the visiting anglers drawing flyer pegs 2,4, 8 and 16 hopefully Rolfslake would fish to its usual high standards as is the case in these mid week matches.

The story of the match was in the small lake John Bennett was on to a flyer in the first 40 minutes as his first 4 fish went 70lb on the tip fishing to the rope in peg 39 so it was going to be a tough ask to catch him up and with the big lake fishing hard all the action was going to be reserved for pegs 9 round to 40 as it was black with fish and with the wind blowing into the small lake the carp were following the blossom that had fallen into the lake. Simon on peg 9 had already lost a carp in the big bush to his right but managed to drag the second one out but it was hard going, and with Daz Kelly on 8 fishing the other side of the bush but catching a mixed bag of chub, perch and carp in was going to be an interesting 5 hours. As for Paul and myself it started slow but then picked up in the last 2 hours by which time Paul was losing 5 fish to every one he landed on long pole fishing 8mm pellet on the deck feeding by pot, and all i could do was catch doubles but they were not coming fast enough as my 8 carp went 105-00 {the biggest was 17-14} fishing paste down the ledge towards peg 5 feeding heavy by hand

The winner today was lake owner John Bennett who after catching his big 4 fish on the tip got caught on the rope snapped his rig then went on the 3 metre line lowered his bait of 11mm pellet and saw the float disappear and then coming back with a 19-00 carp on it brilliant i though as he shouted this to me at least 6 times. for the remainder of the match John alternated between long and short pole lines down the edge and at 3 metres to catch big carp { John had 137-00 on the board by weigh-in time} for his final weight of 190-04 and victory to sink the Cartel members and the Pirate in this match { well done John }.

In second place was Simon Mound who after his slow start abandoned the bush to his right and started a  new 5 metre line straight out in front which runs down the bar between the big and small lake and by fishing big donkey choker 15mm pellet and feeding positively Simon got the fish lined up with also a good stamp of fish his biggest going over 18-00 but in the end fell short of a victory by only 23lb but by Rolfslake’s standards that could be only one or two fish and he ended up with 167-00 but still a great weight {well done Simon }.

All in all the anglers enjoyed their afternoon out in the sun and cant wait till the next mid week match as with the weekends now fully booked through club bookings Rolfslake can now only be fished on a Wednesday or a night match, so get down to one of these matches and have some fun.

Easter Festival Monday Day 3 2011

25th April 2011

The Final day of the festival has arrived. With the lake fishing quite hard its hard to figure out who is gonna take the title this year. Derek Hammond is favourite before the draw, but it all depends what peg he draws in A section. A section had quite a struggle yesterday, maybe the fish will return to that end of the lake today.

More to follow……

Waiting for pictures etc

Winter League, Final Round. New Champions….30th Jan 2011

The morning had arrived for the final round of the winter league at Rolfslake. Reigning champions Rolfs Team Gold were behind the dream team Walker Floats and needed them to have a bad draw (no chance 😀 )

There had been a frost on Saturday night and the lake had a thin layer of ice on it on some area’s, John was in the boat breaking it up. Today we are fishing from 11am to 4pm. With everyone arriving on time the draw got underway on time.

Derek Hammond (dream team) promptly drew peg 34 for A section and Mick lane drew peg 6, comments were flying already 😀 Jon Walker (dream team) was not so lucky in drawing for B section and drew peg 8, Phil Power drew peg 32 which is normally good for a good bag of silvers, Phil’s speciality. As I blanked last match I did not have the luxury of drawing, I had what was left in the bag and everyone left me peg 13. Thanks 😀

On to C section, Steve Waters (dream team) drew peg 24 which has had a few carp coming off it lately, John Bennett pulled out peg 14 which I dont think he fancied too much. Things were looking good for the dream team draw wise, no surprise there 😀

With an extra half an hour of setting up time most people were done early and wondering round the lake chatting.

At 11am Phil shouted the all in. It wasn’t long before Derek on peg 34 had a carp in the net while the rest of A section looked on in envy and the looked back at their motionless floats.

Not long after Steve on peg 24 who was fishing the bomb was playing a carp, after guiding it round the iceberg it was safely in the net and he screamed out much to Johns disgust 😀 Steve was getting a bite a chuck in fact and already had 3 carp in the net before I had my first carp. I was fishing the bomb with double corn just behind the aerator. A nice 10lber to start off with, not bad. John had managed to land 2 carp from peg 14 but could not buy another bite and had to watch Steve and Clive on peg 16 pulling carp from the bar.

Nearly there

My first carp of the year in the net

Half way through the match things were pretty much the same. Steve was still catching carp, Marcus on peg 23 was also catching carp and Clive was also Catching carp. Everyone in C section was having a nice days fishing. Neil Riddy fishing on peg 18 had 2 15lb + carp in his first 2 bites 😯

A Section were all in the same position as they were at the start, watching Derek Hammond catching fish. Having lost another carp he was now catching some big perch and silvers.

B Section, everyone was catching Silvers, Jon Walker had snared 3 big perch from peg 8, Chris Lovelock on peg 9 had also caught a carp fishing the bomb the the aerator too. I was catching plenty of silvers fishing at 13m on red maggot. Phil, Malc and Andy on the car park bank were also catching silvers.

Phil Powell

Andy looking a tad cold

In the final half of the match things were looking grim for current champions Rolfs Team Gold, John still only had 2 carp. Mick Lane had yet to catch a fish and Phil whilst catching plenty of silver fish was behind in his section as I had managed to catch 3 more carp and Chris had 2 carp.

Steve and most of C section were still catching but it was clear that no one was going to catch Steve up. The weigh in revealed it was all over for Rolfs Team Gold but it had been a close battle right up to the end.

Saturday Open. 4th Sept 2010

Today 11 anglers turned up for the open match, a few people had dropped out last minute so this was more of a knock up match. At the draw John Bennett drew first for a change and held the peg in his hand until everyone else had drawn. Me and Marcus had drawn pegs 6 and 7 but also kept them in our hands. As everyone gave there peg numbers to Paul, John thought he was to be on either pegs 6 or 7 but was quite upset to find he actually had endpeg 26 in his hand 😀

Fishing today was from 1-45pm to 6-45pm. On the whistle Dave Whiteman on peg 8 was right in to a fish, his bait had not even his the bottom and the float buried. Chris Lovelock fishing from peg 32 had a bit of a nightmare breaking his topkit. He hooked a fish behind the bush which broke his pole, unknown to him his topkit had wedged under the platform on peg 33. He went round and picked it up and the fish was still on, as he lifted it up it broke again and he lost the fish 🙁

Endpegs 4 and 26 were producing a steady run of fish for Jeff on peg 4 and John on peg 26 but John on peg 16 who was fishing the grass to his right was flying along making regular visits to the weigh station. Marcus on peg 6 had been putting a few fish in the net also fishing over by peg 5 platform and Paul Jay on 30 was having a few fishing at 8 meters.

Poor Justin fishing on peg 9 was having a right nightmare with fish regularly taking him in the bush, having just lost a rig in the bush he tied a new rig and dropped it in only to have that one go in the bush too. Mark on peg 18 was fishing to the newly trimmed bush, Paul Jay and John had been round doing a bit of bush maintenance before the match.

I had a nice time fishing on peg 7 for the first time ever. Fishing was hard with lots of liners and foul hooked fish on the feeder and only a skimmer and one carp coming from the 6 meter line. I did manage to snare a 17lb 12oz carp from the margin to my right. Both me and Dave we getting lots of liners fishing across to the opposite bank.

Paul Blew the whistle and news came round the lake that John Hague had 202lb on the board but was it good enough to win today.

Position Name Peg Weight
1 John Hague 16 238-12

Yes it was, Well done John. Another big weight 🙂 It was a close match for the top 3 in the end, Only one fish separated Jeff Edwards and John Hague.

Todays Winner, John Hague.
